The “tonight” in the original livestream announcement meant the night of August 12, 2023, continuing into August 13—not tonight in 2026. HotHardware said viewers could watch a free Virtual Telescope Project (VTP) stream on YouTube, but the available information does not establish whether that particular recording or feed is still accessible.
What the 2023 Perseid livestream was
HotHardware’s August 12, 2023 article credited the free livestream to the Virtual Telescope Project and linked viewers to YouTube. It described a feed assembled from wide-field cameras at multiple locations, including a VTP camera under dark skies at the project’s facility in Manciano, in Italy’s Maremma countryside.
VTP’s media page lists historical Perseid coverage, but that listing does not confirm that this specific 2023 stream remains available. The story is therefore a historical guide, not a current livestream schedule.

How to watch: stream from home or observe outdoors
| Option | What you see | What matters |
|---|---|---|
| Watch the VTP feed from home | A camera view of the sky, described as drawing on wide-field cameras at different sites. | Whether a feed or recording is currently available; local sky conditions do not determine what appears in a remote camera’s view. |
| Observe outdoors | The meteor shower directly, with your own view of the sky. | Clouds, local visibility, light pollution, and access to a dark location. |
A stream is convenient if you cannot get to a dark site or your local weather blocks the sky. Going outside gives you a direct view instead; the stream does not guarantee that meteors will appear in the camera frame while you watch.

What the 2023 article advised for outdoor viewing
For that year’s event, HotHardware suggested Northern Hemisphere observers begin looking around 10 p.m., with the best viewing in the pre-dawn hours. These were general recommendations for the 2023 shower, not a forecast for your location or guidance for another year.
- Choose a dark spot away from city lights.
- Limit phone use while your eyes adjust to the dark.
- Allow for changing weather and visibility; a clear sky is not guaranteed.
HotHardware attributed the Perseids to debris from comet Swift-Tuttle and gave an estimate of 50 to 100 meteors per hour in a clear night sky. That is the estimate reported in its August 12, 2023 story, not a promise of what any one observer would see.

Does the event happen every August?
The 2023 story said the shower could continue after its peak through the rest of August 2023. That historical viewing window should not be treated as the dates or peak schedule for a later year. Check a current astronomical schedule before planning around a particular night.
