VLC can play live TV streams, but it does not provide a TV service or its own channel catalog. To watch live TV in VLC, open a playlist URL from a separate source—such as IPTV-org’s public playlist—in VLC’s network-stream feature. The playlist may include thousands of links, but that is not a verified count of channels that currently work.
What VLC’s “hidden live TV” feature actually does
VLC’s Open Network Stream feature plays media from a URL. It does not supply the channels or host the video. IPTV-org provides playlist files containing links to streams that a compatible player may be able to open.
IPTV-org’s README identifies its main playlist as https://iptv-org.github.io/iptv/index.m3u. The project describes its collection as user-submitted links believed to be intentionally public; it does not host the video files or control the destinations. The playlist is not a guarantee that every link is available, authorized for every audience, or playable in every location.
How to watch live TV in VLC on a desktop
These menu steps are for VLC desktop documentation version 3.0; menus may differ on mobile or in other versions.

- Open VLC on your desktop computer.
- Select Media > Open Network Stream.
- Enter
https://iptv-org.github.io/iptv/index.m3uin the network URL field. - Select Play. VLC will try to open the playlist and its stream links.
IPTV-org says its playlists can be used with a video player that supports live streaming. Once loaded, use VLC’s playlist view to browse entries and select a stream. A playlist entry is a link to try, not a promise that the channel will play.
Should you use the main playlist or a narrower one?
The main playlist is the broad starting point. IPTV-org also points to other playlist variants, and PCWorld describes lists organized by country, language, region, and category. A narrower list can make browsing more manageable if you already know what you want to watch.

Why a channel may not play
- The link is offline or has moved. Playlist links can change, and individual streams may stop working.
- The stream is geographically restricted. Some providers limit playback by location.
- The entry is not a playable stream for your setup. VLC may be unable to open a particular link even when other entries work.
If one entry fails, try another from the playlist. The project does not control the linked destinations, so a failed stream does not necessarily mean VLC’s network-stream feature is broken.

“Thousands” should be treated as an unverified headline-level count, not a current total of working channels. IPTV-org’s README identifies the playlist but does not publish a dated count of currently playable channels. The number of links and their availability can change, and access may depend on location.

In practical terms, VLC is a free media player that can try public stream links supplied through an external playlist. It is not a guaranteed cable replacement or a channel provider.
