In the Republic of Ireland, you can watch a Virgin Media Television live sports event on Virgin Media Play by registering for an account, opening Play on a supported device or platform, and selecting the live channel or event in its schedule. Virgin Media confirms live access to Virgin Media One, Two, Three and Four on desktop and Android and iOS apps. Whether a particular match is available—and whether Play is available directly on your television—depends on rights and platform support.
What you need before you start
- A Virgin Media Play account. Virgin Media describes Play as a free online service, but an account is required.
- A device or platform that offers Play. The service FAQ lists computers, Android and iOS devices, Virgin Media or Sky platforms, and NOW TV. Its 2024 launch announcement also described access on mobile, tablet and smart TV.
- The event must be available to stream on Play. Live-channel access does not mean every match or programme can be streamed.
Watch live sport on a phone or tablet
- Register for a Virgin Media Play account.
- Open the Virgin Media Play app on an Android or iOS phone or tablet. Virgin Media’s FAQ confirms that the apps carry its live channels; check the current app listing if you cannot find the app on your device.
- Open the schedule and select the live channel or event. Virgin Media One, Two, Three and Four are the channels the FAQ confirms are available live through desktop and the Android and iOS apps.
- If the event does not play, check the schedule and any availability information. Rights restrictions mean some programmes cannot be streamed.
A phone is convenient when you want to watch away from a television; a tablet gives you a larger portable screen. You do not need to buy a new device just to use Play.
Watch Virgin Media Play on a smart TV
First check whether Virgin Media Play is available directly on your TV or its connected platform. The FAQ lists Virgin Media and Sky platforms and NOW TV, while the launch announcement referred more broadly to smart TVs. The available guidance does not identify specific TV makes or models, so do not assume that every smart TV has a Play app.

- Search your television’s app store or the app catalogue for its connected platform for Virgin Media Play.
- If Play is listed, install or open it and sign in to your account.
- Find the live event or relevant Virgin Media channel in the schedule and select it.
- If you cannot find Play, check whether your TV’s platform is among the service’s supported options. Phone-to-TV casting is not confirmed in the service guidance, so do not rely on it as an alternative.
Why a live sports event may be unavailable
Virgin Media says some programmes cannot be streamed because of rights restrictions. Most Play content is available only within the Republic of Ireland, so location can also affect access. Availability is event-specific: the general confirmation that Virgin Media channels stream live is not a guarantee that every sport, match or broadcast is available on Play. Check the current Play schedule and the event listing for the match you want.

For example, Virgin Media announced that audio description and Irish Sign Language coverage of the 2026 Guinness Six Nations could be accessed by Play users via Virgin Media Four. That was specific to that tournament and does not establish the same provision for other sports events.
Catch-up is different from watching live
If you miss a programme, Virgin Media’s FAQ says most programmes are available for catch-up for 30 days; some have a seven-day window because of rights restrictions. The FAQ also says over 90% of broadcast programming is offered for catch-up. That figure describes the catch-up catalogue, not the proportion of live sport or sports rights available.

Virgin Media Play is not Virgin TV Go
Virgin Media Play is the broadcaster’s free online service. Virgin TV Anywhere and Virgin TV Go are separate services associated with Virgin Media TV subscriptions and have their own account and device conditions. Make sure you are opening Play when following these steps.
