Standard FIH outdoor field hockey has four 15-minute quarters, and a goal counts only when an attacker plays the ball inside the shooting circle before it crosses the goal-line beneath the crossbar. To watch a live match, start with the competition’s official event page and check its broadcast listing for your country; streaming rights and availability vary by event and location.
Where to watch a live field hockey match
Start at the official page for the competition you want to watch, then follow its viewing or broadcast information for your country. The right service depends on the event, season and your location, so check the current listing before paying or making plans around a stream.
On November 4, 2025, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) announced Watch.Hockey live and on-demand passes for the 2025–26 season, covering events including the Pro League, junior World Cups and World Cup qualifiers. The announcement said matches were geoblocked in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka under broadcast agreements; long-form highlights and on-demand video were available there. These details apply to the dated offer, not necessarily to every match or later season. Read FIH’s Watch.Hockey announcement.

How long is a field hockey game?
Standard FIH outdoor timing
Under Rule 5.1 of the FIH Rules of Hockey 2023, a standard match consists of four 15-minute quarters: 60 minutes of regulation playing time. The scheduled intervals are two minutes after the first and third quarters and five minutes at half-time. That makes 69 minutes from the start of play through the scheduled breaks, before stoppages or broadcast segments.
The full broadcast or time spent at a venue can run longer. Stoppages, video review, a penalty corner that continues at the end of a quarter, and presentation or coverage time all affect elapsed time. Competition regulations, or an agreement allowed under the FIH rules, can also set different periods or intervals. Consult the FIH Rules of Hockey 2023.

What the quarter clock tells you
Watch for four periods rather than two halves. The final seconds of a quarter may continue to allow a penalty corner to be completed, and the umpire may finish a decision or review connected with the end of the period.
How do you score in field hockey?
The shooting-circle requirement
A goal is awarded when an attacker plays the ball from inside the shooting circle, the ball remains inside the circle, and it then passes completely over the goal-line beneath the crossbar. A defender or goalkeeper may touch it after the qualifying attacking play. A shot taken from outside the circle does not count as a goal on its own.

Who wins, and what if it is tied?
The team with more goals wins. Under the basic rule, a tied score—including 0–0—is a draw. A tournament match that must produce a winner may use a shoot-out or another tie-break specified in that competition’s regulations; check the event rules rather than assuming every tied match has the same outcome. Five things to watch during the match
- The circle: Notice whether an attacker plays the ball from inside the shooting circle before it crosses the line.
- The clock and intervals: Standard FIH outdoor play uses four 15-minute quarters, with two-minute breaks after quarters one and three and a five-minute half-time.
- Penalty corners and strokes: These are structured scoring opportunities awarded under the rules, rather than ordinary open-play shots.
- The restart after a goal: The opposing team takes a centre pass.
- Players and equipment: Each team may have no more than eleven players on the field at once. Players use a stick with a flat playing side to play a hard, spherical ball.
Why the umpire may stop play
Players may not play the ball with the back of the stick or play dangerously. They can stop, receive, deflect or play a ball at height when the action is controlled and not dangerous. Those limits help explain whistles after a raised ball or stick contact, even when a quick tackle initially looks successful.
