Start with the official player, not a VPN. TG4 says most of its Irish-language content is available worldwide, so many programmes will play from abroad with no workaround at all. RTÉ and Virgin Media content depends on the rights attached to each programme. A VPN connected to a Dublin server can change the IP address a streaming player sees, but it does not guarantee playback. A September 2026 test reported different results across players and VPN providers.
Step 1: Test the official player from where you are
Open RTÉ Player, TG4 Player, or Virgin Media Play in a browser or app from your current country, search for the exact programme, and try to play it. This is the only check that tells you whether the programme is open to you without any routing change.
- Open the broadcaster’s player in a browser or its app on the device you plan to use.
- Search for the exact title, series, and episode. A show can be available in one episode and not another.
- If it plays, you are finished. No VPN is needed.
- If it does not play, go to the next section to read the access markers before changing anything.
TG4 is the most generous of the three for viewers abroad. Its FAQ says that some, but not all, of its content has a rights restriction. Its exact wording is: “Some (but not all) of TG4’s content has a rights restriction, allowing us to make it available on the island of Ireland only.” TG4 also offers live streams where rights permit, catch-up for Irish-language broadcasts for 35 days subject to rights, and additional collections. The TG4 corporate page reports 4.3 million video views on TG4 Player during 2024, up 23% on the previous year. Those are player views, not unique viewers, and they do not describe the 2026 audience.

Step 2: Read the access markers on TG4 listings
TG4’s listing pages use two markers that tell you what to expect before you troubleshoot:

- [é] marks a programme available only in Ireland. Rights apply, so a VPN may or may not help, and the result depends on the service and the programme.
- ? marks content that is not online. No VPN can make it appear, because the file is not published on the player.
TG4’s FAQ also explains that browser access to geoblocked content requires an Ireland-registered IP address. For apps, access is determined by geolocation, and the FAQ advises turning on Location Services on the device for the fullest permissible access. On an Android or iOS phone, that setting lives in the operating system’s privacy or location controls, so check it there before assuming the app is blocked.
Why programme rights decide the outcome
RTÉ’s FAQ explains that some material is limited to the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland because of third-party licensing commitments, and that it uses IP geo-access to distribute content only in cleared territories. That page was last updated in 2014, so read its explanation as background on how the system works. Confirm current access for each programme inside RTÉ Player itself.

In practice, the same rule applies across services: a broadcaster can show a programme only where it holds the right to do so. A change of IP address does not alter that right. It only changes the location a player reads from the connection.
What a Dublin VPN endpoint changes and what it does not
A VPN sends a device’s internet traffic through a server elsewhere. When the server is in Dublin, a service that uses IP location may see an Ireland-associated address. That is the only thing the endpoint changes. It does not alter the programme’s licensing, and it does not make the connection look identical to a residential connection in Ireland. Players can detect and block known VPN endpoints, which is why results vary.

Because access depends on the player, the programme, and the provider’s current endpoints, a VPN test is only a snapshot. Check whether your VPN provider currently offers a Dublin or Ireland endpoint before you pay for one.
Dated test results: which player worked with which provider
Gizmodo published a comparison on September 24, 2026. Its tests were run from Europe on Windows 11. The results below are what that outlet observed on those dates and conditions. They are not a guarantee, an endorsement, or a result you should expect to reproduce.

The pattern matters more than the individual rankings. A provider that works for one player can fail for another, so test each service you care about separately. Gizmodo’s results are one outlet’s observations at one point in time, and provider endpoints change.

If you want to watch on a television, first confirm that the player app and any VPN app run on your device. A secondary setup guide, matched.ie, describes installing a VPN app on Fire TV Stick, Android TV, or Apple TV. For a smart TV without VPN support, it describes a router or casting approach instead. This is general setup guidance. It does not confirm compatibility for every model, country, or app version.

- Fire TV Stick, Android TV, Apple TV: install the VPN app from the device’s app store, connect to an Ireland or Dublin endpoint, then open the player app.
- Smart TV without VPN support: set up the VPN on a router so the TV’s traffic passes through it, or use a casting approach from a phone or computer that is already connected.
- Before you buy any device: check that the player app and the VPN app are listed for that model in its current app store. Do not assume a device will run a given app because a guide mentions it.
Which services are involved
Coimisiún na Meán, Ireland’s regulator, lists RTÉ Player and TG4 Player among public-service on-demand services. It gives Virgin Media Player, Eir TV, Vodafone, and Apple TV+ as examples of commercial services. The regulator notes that its register changes continuously. Being on the list shows that a service exists in Ireland. It does not show that the service offers the same catalogue, or any access, outside Ireland. The Gizmodo test refers to the same service as Virgin Media Play, while the regulator uses Virgin Media Player.
A checklist for choosing a route
- Programme rights: Is this exact episode or live event open in your country on the official player?
- Official availability: Does the player work from your location without extra routing?
- Endpoint support: Does your VPN provider currently offer an Ireland or Dublin endpoint?
- Observed reliability: Is there recent, service-specific evidence, and how old is it?
- Device compatibility: Can the broadcaster app and VPN app run on the device you plan to use?
- Terms and accounts: Read each service’s current terms and registration requirements. The sources here do not establish whether any broadcaster permits IP-location workarounds, or whether an account is required for every service.
When playback fails: a troubleshooting order
- Check the title for the TG4 markers. A ? means the programme is not online, so stop there.
- If the programme is marked [é] or is on RTÉ or Virgin Media, confirm that the official player and its app are current and that Location Services is on for apps.
- Connect to an Ireland or Dublin endpoint from your VPN provider’s current list and try again on the same device.
- If one provider fails, test another. The dated results above show that failures are service-specific.
- If none of the steps work, check the service’s current terms and help pages, since access rules change.
Read the terms before you rely on a workaround
Using a VPN to change the location a service sees may conflict with that service’s terms of use. The sources for this article do not establish whether a particular broadcaster permits such a workaround, and this article does not give legal advice for your jurisdiction. The safest approach is to use the official player first and to read the current terms of each service before you depend on a VPN.
