The best way to watch Gundam in order is to start with the original Mobile Suit Gundam and follow the Universal Century sequence: Zeta Gundam, Gundam ZZ, Char’s Counterattack, Unicorn, Narrative, and Hathaway. For a standalone introduction, start with Gundam 00, Iron-Blooded Orphans, or The Witch from Mercury.
Key takeaways: how to watch Gundam in order
- The main connected Gundam story is the Universal Century (UC), beginning with Mobile Suit Gundam.
- The recommended beginner UC sequence is Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam, Gundam ZZ, Char’s Counterattack, Unicorn, Narrative, and Hathaway.
- You can replace the original television series with the three-film compilation, and you can watch either the seven-episode Unicorn OVAs or the RE:0096 television edit.
- Gundam 00, SEED, Iron-Blooded Orphans, and The Witch from Mercury use separate settings and do not require UC knowledge.
- Streaming availability varies by country and date, so verify each title individually rather than assuming one service carries the entire franchise.
What is the correct Gundam watch order?
The best way to watch Gundam in order depends on whether you want the main connected story or a shorter standalone introduction. For the main story, begin with the original Mobile Suit Gundam and follow the Universal Century sequence: Zeta Gundam, Gundam ZZ, Char’s Counterattack, Unicorn, Narrative, and Hathaway. For a standalone start, choose Gundam 00, Iron-Blooded Orphans, or The Witch from Mercury.
Gundam is a franchise made up of several timelines, not one uninterrupted story. The original animated continuity is the Universal Century, commonly abbreviated UC. The official Gundam portal identifies the first Mobile Suit Gundam as beginning in 1979, while Crunchyroll’s listing places its story in Universal Century 0079; those details make the original series the natural starting point for the central continuity. The official Gundam franchise overview and the current Crunchyroll listing for Mobile Suit Gundam provide the relevant production and setting information.

What is the main Universal Century Gundam order?
The following is the most coherent first-watch route through the principal Amuro–Char and later UC story. This is narrative and release-oriented order, not a list of every UC production in strict in-universe chronology.

| Order | Title | Why watch it here | Format decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mobile Suit Gundam | Introduces Amuro Ray, Char Aznable, the One Year War, the Federation–Zeon conflict, and the foundations of UC. | Original 1979 television series, or the three-film compilation. |
| 2 | Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam | Directly continues the UC storyline and introduces Kamille Bidan, the Titans, AEUG, and Char’s postwar role. | Use the original television series for a first complete viewing. |
| 3 | Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ | Continues the aftermath of Zeta and develops the Neo Zeon and Mineva Lao Zabi story. | Do not skip it on a first complete UC run. |
| 4 | Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack | Major culmination of the Amuro–Char conflict and an important bridge to later UC productions. | Watch after both Zeta and ZZ. |
| 5 | Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn | Builds on the Federation–Zeon conflict, Newtype themes, and unresolved political questions from earlier UC entries. | Choose the seven-episode OVA or the RE:0096 television re-edit. |
| 6 | Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative | Sequel to Unicorn, taking place one year after the Laplace Incident. | Feature film. |
| 7 | Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway | Continues Hathaway’s story and explores the legacy of Amuro Ray and Char Aznable. | The first film assumes substantial earlier UC knowledge. |
1. Mobile Suit Gundam
Start with the original Mobile Suit Gundam if you want the fullest introduction to Amuro Ray, Char Aznable, the One Year War, and the political structure of the Universal Century. The original television series provides more character development and world-building than the condensed film version.
If the full television run is too long, watch the compilation trilogy: Mobile Suit Gundam I, Mobile Suit Gundam II: Soldiers of Sorrow, and Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space. The trilogy is a practical entry point, but it is an editorially shorter presentation rather than a mandatory replacement for the series. Viewers who want a permanent fallback when streaming access changes can also compare available Mobile Suit Gundam Blu-ray or Gundam movie trilogy Blu-ray editions.
2. Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
Watch Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam next because it is the direct major continuation of the original UC story. The series introduces the Titans, AEUG, Kamille Bidan, and Char’s role after the One Year War. The official Gundam explanation describes the Zeta Gundam as an AEUG-associated transforming mobile suit developed in opposition to the Titans; the official Zeta Gundam feature supplies that context.

The films condense and revise the story, so they work better as an alternate presentation after, or instead of, a first viewing when you already understand the continuity. Crunchyroll’s current Zeta Gundam listing identifies the available series presentation and audio information.
3. Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ
Continue with Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ after Zeta Gundam. The early episodes change to a lighter tone, which can surprise viewers coming directly from Zeta, but ZZ remains the next principal installment. The series is important preparation for Char’s Counterattack, especially for developments involving Neo Zeon and Mineva Lao Zabi.
4. Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack
Watch Char’s Counterattack after ZZ. The film is the major culmination of the Amuro–Char conflict and depends on the emotional and political context established by both preceding television series. Watching the film before Zeta Gundam and ZZ removes much of that context.
5. Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn
Watch Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn after Char’s Counterattack. Unicorn occurs later in the UC timeline and revisits the Federation–Zeon conflict, Newtype ideas, and unresolved political questions from the earlier entries. The official Gundam Unicorn portal provides dedicated story, character, and mobile-suit information.

- Upscale your DVDs to near HD quality

- Keep things simple with the new user-friendly interface
There are two closely related ways to watch Unicorn: the original seven-episode OVA series or the television re-edit Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE:0096. The two versions tell substantially the same story, so choose one rather than watching both during a first pass.
6. Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative
Watch Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative after Unicorn. Crunchyroll’s current Narrative listing describes the film as taking place one year after the Laplace Incident, making Narrative a sequel rather than a beginner entry point.
7. Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway
Watch Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway after Char’s Counterattack; watching it after Unicorn and Narrative is preferable when you are following the broader modern UC route. The official Hathaway story page frames the film around Hathaway’s relationship with the ideals and legacy of Amuro Ray and Char Aznable.
Hathaway is not a substitute for the earlier UC entries. The first film assumes knowledge of the UC political landscape and Hathaway’s personal history, particularly his connection to Char’s Counterattack. The planned film series should therefore be treated as a later chapter, not an alternative starting point.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should you watch Gundam in chronological order?
For a first viewing, release and narrative order is better than strict in-universe chronology. Several UC side stories occur before Zeta Gundam on the timeline, but watching every prequel in chronological position interrupts the principal story and can spoil or recontextualize information that the original productions intended to introduce first.
The stable beginner sequence is therefore Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam, Gundam ZZ, Char’s Counterattack, Unicorn, Narrative, and Hathaway. Chronological order becomes more useful after a first pass, when you want to explore the UC setting rather than follow its central dramatic progression.

Which Universal Century side stories should you watch later?
UC side stories enrich the setting, but none of the following is required before Zeta Gundam. Add them after the relevant mainline entry or save them for a deeper completionist run.
| Side story | Best placement | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket | After the original Mobile Suit Gundam | Compact One Year War side story. |
| Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team | After the original series or film trilogy | Another One Year War side story with a distinct focus and tone. |
| Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory | Chronologically before Zeta, or after Zeta by release order | Watching it after Zeta avoids interrupting the principal narrative. |
| Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin | Usually after the original series | Prequel and retelling centered heavily on Char, Sayla, and the origins of the One Year War. |
| Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt | After becoming familiar with UC | UC-associated side story with its own tone and presentation; not required for the Amuro–Char route. |
| Mobile Suit Gundam F91 and Victory Gundam | After the early UC route | Later UC works separated from the early Amuro–Char storyline by substantial in-universe time. |
Why not start with The Origin? Although The Origin is earlier in the timeline, the series is usually more accessible after the original Mobile Suit Gundam. The prequel assumes or deliberately recontextualizes information that the original introduced first.
Which Gundam series can you watch without UC knowledge?
You can begin several Gundam productions without watching any UC title. These alternate-universe series have separate settings, characters, and continuity, so choosing one is often the best option for viewers who want modern animation, a shorter commitment, or a self-contained story.
| Standalone starting point | Watch order | Setting or focus | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile Suit Gundam 00 | Season 1 → Season 2 → A Wakening of the Trailblazer | Its own future setting, beginning in A.D. 2307. | Viewers who want a modern political-war story without beginning with 1970s animation. |
| Mobile Suit Gundam SEED | SEED → SEED Destiny → SEED Freedom | Separate SEED continuity. | Viewers who want a connected alternate-universe trilogy of major entries. |
| Iron-Blooded Orphans | Season 1 → Season 2; supplemental Urdr-Hunt material afterward | Mikazuki Augus, Orga Itsuka, Tekkadan, and the Mars–Earth conflict, with the Calamity War as historical background. | Viewers seeking a self-contained story centered on a tight group and its political struggle. |
| The Witch from Mercury | Prologue → Season 1 → Season 2 | Independent A.S.122 setting with its own characters, institutions, and conflicts. | Viewers looking for a deliberately accessible modern entry point. |
| GQuuuuuuX | Follow the currently released official order | Newer Gundam production with current distribution arrangements. | Viewers who want the newest option and are willing to verify current availability. |
How should you watch Gundam 00?
Watch Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Season 1, then Season 2, followed by the film A Wakening of the Trailblazer. Crunchyroll’s listing places the series in its own A.D. 2307 setting, so UC preparation is unnecessary. The current Gundam 00 listing is the appropriate place to verify title availability.
How should you watch Gundam SEED?
Watch Mobile Suit Gundam SEED before Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, and watch Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom after both series. The official Gundam portal maintains separate SEED story material, so the SEED entries should not be mixed into the UC order.
How should you watch Iron-Blooded Orphans?
Watch Iron-Blooded Orphans Season 1 followed by Season 2. The official series material presents the two seasons as parts of one story and identifies the Calamity War as the setting’s historical background. Supplemental Urdr-Hunt animated material should follow the main series rather than replace either season. The official Iron-Blooded Orphans story pages provide the series context.

How should you watch The Witch from Mercury?
Watch The Witch from Mercury Prologue, then Season 1 and Season 2. The official site identifies the setting as A.S.122 and presents the Prologue and two-season story through its own characters and institutions, making the series independent of UC. The official Witch from Mercury portal is the best source for current series information.
The official Gundam site has previously stated that the series and Prologue were available through the official Gundam.INFO YouTube channel. YouTube availability is region- and time-sensitive, so verify the current listing instead of treating that statement as a permanent distribution guarantee.
Where does Gundam GQuuuuuuX fit?
GQuuuuuuX is a newer Gundam production and should be treated as a current viewing option rather than a permanent franchise-wide streaming solution. The official announcement states that the title is coming exclusively to Prime Video in more than 240 countries and regions; because release and availability arrangements can change, check the official GQuuuuuuX streaming announcement and the local Prime Video listing before watching.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where can you watch Gundam?
Streaming catalogs change by country and date, so no single service should be assumed to carry every recommended Gundam title. As of the research pass, Crunchyroll had live pages for the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam, Gundam 00, and Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative. In the United States, JustWatch reported the original Mobile Suit Gundam as available through Crunchyroll and the Crunchyroll Amazon Channel when checked in June 2026. Check each title directly in your local storefront before subscribing or buying a season.

Practical availability checklist
- Search for the exact title, not just “Gundam,” because a service may carry one timeline or film but not the next entry.
- Confirm your country, audio options, subtitles, and whether the listing is the complete series or a compilation.
- Check the next title before starting a long UC route so a catalog change does not interrupt the sequence.
- Use physical media when a required continuity entry is unavailable or rotates out; compare the original-series television release with the compilation trilogy rather than assuming they are identical.
- Verify official Gundam YouTube or series pages separately because selected episodes and titles may be territory-limited.
For a title-specific current check, consult the U.S. JustWatch listing for Mobile Suit Gundam or the relevant local service page. JustWatch is useful for availability at a particular moment, but it does not make a catalog permanent.
What should you watch if you want the simplest recommendation?
Choose one of these three paths:
- Complete main story: Mobile Suit Gundam → Zeta Gundam → Gundam ZZ → Char’s Counterattack → Unicorn → Narrative → Hathaway.
- Shorter UC entry: the original Mobile Suit Gundam film trilogy, followed by Zeta Gundam and the rest of the main UC sequence.
- Standalone modern entry: start with Gundam 00, Iron-Blooded Orphans, or The Witch from Mercury; none requires the UC route first.
Do not insert every chronological side story into the beginner path. Watch the principal UC sequence first, then return to 0080, 08th MS Team, 0083, The Origin, Thunderbolt, F91, and Victory Gundam according to your interest.

Gundam model kits after you choose a series
Gunpla is optional merchandise, not part of the viewing order. After watching a series, choosing a model based on a favorite mobile suit is a natural next step. Official product pages document active kit lines connected with titles including The Witch from Mercury and SEED Freedom, such as the official Witch from Mercury model-kit announcement and the RG 1/144 Force Impulse Gundam Spec II product page. Compare the grade, scale, tools required, and current stock before buying a Bandai Gunpla model kit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to watch the original Gundam before other Gundam series?
No. Gundam is divided into multiple timelines. The Universal Century is the main connected continuity, but Gundam 00, SEED, Iron-Blooded Orphans, and The Witch from Mercury are separate settings that can be watched independently.
Should I watch Gundam: The Origin first?
No. The Origin is a prequel and retelling, but watching the original Mobile Suit Gundam first is usually more effective because The Origin assumes or recontextualizes information introduced by the original.
Are Gundam Unicorn and RE:0096 different stories?
Yes, but choose one version for a first viewing. The seven-episode OVA series and the RE:0096 television edit tell substantially the same story, so watching both is unnecessary duplication.
What is the correct Gundam 00 watch order?
Start with Season 1, continue to Season 2, and then watch A Wakening of the Trailblazer. Gundam 00 is an independent continuity and does not require Universal Century knowledge.
Where can I stream every Gundam series?
There is no permanently reliable single service for the entire franchise. Streaming availability depends on country and date, so search for each exact title and verify the local listing before starting a continuity run.
