To watch a DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on Xbox Series X, you need a model with a built-in disc drive. Install the Blu-ray Player app from the console Store, insert the movie disc, then open the app if playback does not start automatically. The Xbox Series X Digital Edition has no disc drive and cannot play physical discs.
Check that your Xbox Series X has a disc drive
Xbox Series X models with an optical disc drive can play movie discs. The Xbox Series X Digital Edition is digital-only; Microsoft’s UK product listing says it does not play physical discs. Check the console itself before troubleshooting: if it has no disc slot, it cannot play DVDs or Blu-ray discs.
Do not confuse the disc-drive Series X with Xbox Series S. Series S is all-digital, and Xbox says external USB disc drives are not supported as a way to add disc playback.

Set up DVD or Blu-ray playback
- Connect and turn on the console. Connect the Xbox Series X to your TV as you normally would.
- Install Blu-ray Player. Open the Store on the console, find the Blu-ray Player app, and download it. Xbox Wire’s Xbox Series X|S FAQ specifies that this app is needed to play movie discs.
- Insert the movie disc. The disc-drive Series X supports DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray movie discs.
- Open the app if needed. If playback does not start automatically, launch Blu-ray Player from your console’s apps and games.
Which movie disc formats work?

If the Xbox does not play the disc
- Confirm the console has a disc drive. A Digital Edition cannot read physical media.
- Check the format. Make sure the movie is on DVD, Blu-ray, or Ultra HD Blu-ray, rather than another type of disc.
- Inspect the disc. Look for visible damage or dirt.
- Check region information. Blu-ray region codes may be printed on the disc or on the back of its case. Sony’s disc support guidance explains that a region-coded Blu-ray may be limited to players for the matching region. Xbox-specific region behavior is not established here, so do not assume that every imported disc will work or that a particular region mismatch is the cause.
- Make sure Blu-ray Player is installed. Download it from the console Store if it is missing.
Does Xbox Series X need a special TV setting?
The cited Xbox guidance establishes the supported disc formats and the Blu-ray Player app requirement, but it does not specify a special TV setting for basic movie playback. Connect the console to the TV as usual and use the console’s standard display setup.

- The new DVD drive will need to be “flashed” with your console’s security key or will need to have your old drive's board swapped into the new replacement drive. That's Mean That You need to transfer the PCB board from the old one to the new one since it's paired to the Xbox.
