You can watch shows while traveling, but a streaming app’s offline downloads are not ordinary video files you can copy to a USB stick. Use a USB drive only for compatible video files you are entitled to store and play; for streaming-service downloads, save episodes inside the service’s supported app on the device you plan to carry.
What “on a USB stick” can mean
There are two different ways to take shows with you:
- Transferable video files: Files you are entitled to store and play, in a format supported by your playback device, can be copied to a USB flash drive. Whether they play depends on the television, computer, or other device you use.
- Offline app downloads: Episodes saved through a streaming service are managed and played inside that service’s app. They are not ordinary files to move onto a USB drive. Amazon Prime Video’s UK help page specifically says, “We don’t recommend that downloads are saved onto USB-connected drives” (Amazon Prime Video: Download Prime Video Titles).
So, if by “put TV shows on a USB stick” you mean copying episodes out of a streaming app, that is not the supported offline-viewing method described by these services. If your goal is simply to watch on a trip, use the service’s download option in its app, when available, or use a USB drive for files you can legitimately transfer.
How to download episodes to watch on a trip
- Choose the device you will carry. Check that the service supports downloads in its app on that device and operating system. Netflix lists its Android, iPhone, iPad, Google Chromebook, and Amazon Fire apps for downloads (Netflix Help Center: Why isn’t a movie or TV show available for download?). Amazon Prime Video’s UK page lists Fire tablets and its iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows 10/11 apps (Amazon Prime Video: Download Prime Video Titles).
- Check your plan and the specific show. A download option is not guaranteed for every title or plan. Netflix says rights and other factors can make some titles unavailable for download. Disney+ US guidance says downloads require an eligible plan and supported mobile device; its current guidance lists up to 10 supported mobile devices. These Disney+ details apply to the US help page, not necessarily to other countries or plans (Disney+ Help Center: Downloads on Disney+).
- Look for the download control in the service app. Open the show’s episode list and check whether the app offers a download option for the episodes you want. If it does not, do not assume the episode can be made available offline by moving app data to external storage.
- Download while you have a reliable connection. Open the app’s downloads area before departure to confirm the episodes appear there. Follow any prompts or limits shown by the service.
- Test playback on the device you will take. Start an episode before leaving, and make sure you know how to access it without relying on a hotel or travel connection.
Check storage and playback before you travel
Offline rules vary by service, country, plan, title, and device. Check the current help page for your country and the app on your actual device; a download feature listed for one platform does not establish that it works on another. Disney+’s US help page, for example, says downloads are currently unavailable on TV-connected devices, computers, and Windows 10/11 tablets. That is US-specific guidance and should not be treated as a universal rule (Disney+ Help Center: Downloads on Disney+).

Also check where the app lets you save downloads. Prime Video’s UK instructions describe choosing a download location in its Android and Windows apps, while advising against USB-connected drives. Storage-location controls in an app do not turn its downloads into transferable video files (Amazon Prime Video: Download Prime Video Titles).
Using a USB drive with compatible video files
A USB flash drive can make sense if you already have compatible video files that you are entitled to store and play. Check the playback device’s supported file formats and USB requirements before choosing a drive. File size, format, device compatibility, and the number of episodes determine how much capacity you need, so there is no reliable one-size-fits-all capacity recommendation.

Do not buy a drive expecting it to hold or play downloads from Netflix, Prime Video, or Disney+ as ordinary files. For app downloads, use the supported app on the device you will carry.
Watching offline on a television
Taking a phone or tablet with downloaded episodes does not guarantee that you can display them on any television. Amazon Prime Video’s UK help page says offline playback to a TV is possible with supported devices and appropriate adaptors, but playback over Chromecast or AirPlay is not permitted. Confirm the current instructions for your service, device, and region before relying on a hotel television or wireless casting (Amazon Prime Video: Download Prime Video Titles).

Automating episode downloads
Netflix Smart Downloads can remove an episode after you watch it and download the next episode. Netflix says Smart Downloads is unavailable on ad-supported plans, so check your plan and the feature’s current settings before depending on it (Netflix Help Center: How to use ‘Smart Downloads’).
