A VPN can route your internet connection through a UK server, but it cannot guarantee that BBC iPlayer will accept the connection—and BBC terms say not to stream or download iPlayer programmes outside the UK. The VPN setup instructions below explain what providers document; independent tests cited here were not conducted in Australia.
Know the BBC’s terms before trying to connect
The BBC’s Terms of Use, dated 19 September 2022, say: “Don’t stream or download iPlayer TV shows when you’re outside the UK.” The terms also give using a VPN to watch BBC iPlayer outside the UK as an example of accessing content from outside the UK that a person is not allowed to access. This is the BBC’s stated service-terms position, not legal advice, and the BBC does not endorse VPN use for this purpose.
The same terms say a TV Licence is required to watch or download BBC programmes on iPlayer in the UK, Channel Islands, and Isle of Man. People outside those areas are directed to check whether their country has its own TV-licensing scheme. Buying a VPN does not provide a TV Licence, a BBC account, or permission under BBC terms.

A VPN encrypts and routes a device’s internet traffic through a server operated by the VPN provider. Choosing a UK server gives the connection a UK exit location, but it does not make iPlayer access certain. Streaming services can detect or block VPN connections, and working servers or access behavior may change. Provider setup guides describe how to connect; they are not proof that iPlayer will work from Australia.

VPN setup guidance from providers
The following is provider-documented setup guidance, not a recommendation or a guarantee of access from Australia. Follow the service’s terms and the applicable rules where you are.
NordVPN
NordVPN’s BBC iPlayer troubleshooting page says to connect to a UK VPN server. If iPlayer does not work, it advises confirming the VPN connection is active, trying another server in the same country, and clearing the browser or app cache. The page also says users must comply with applicable laws and the terms of services they access.

ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN’s streaming guide says browser viewing generally works best on Windows and Mac, while the streaming service’s official app is preferable on mobile and streaming devices. Its compatibility notes include Fire TV/Fire Stick and certain Android TV and Chromecast with Google TV devices. The guide also describes using a virtual VPN router or a router configured for ExpressVPN and warns against copyright infringement. These are setup notes, not independent confirmation that a particular device can access iPlayer in Australia.
What published VPN tests can tell you
Third-party testing can help compare services, but the cited results are not tests from Australia and should not be read as a promise for your connection.

Tom’s Guide’s method
Tom’s Guide’s iPlayer guide describes connecting to a UK server, attempting playback, switching servers if VPN use was detected, and contacting provider support if needed. It also says it measured speed on a 10 Gbps line and considered the number of UK servers. The publication reports that the VPNs it reviewed connected in its tests; that is its own reported result, not an Australian test or a guarantee of future access.
TechRadar’s reporting
TechRadar’s 2026 guide reports its own observations and discusses app support and VPN protocols. Any device or performance details should be interpreted in light of TechRadar’s stated test location and update date; they do not establish results for an Australian connection.

How to compare VPN options for your device
Instead of relying on a single ranking, compare the evidence that matters to your setup:

- Reported iPlayer connection: Check which publisher ran the test, when it was updated, and where testing took place. A UK-server test elsewhere is not an Australian result.
- UK server options: Look for a documented UK location and whether you can switch among servers if one does not connect. A larger choice does not guarantee access.
- Speed evidence: Treat speed as specific to the publisher’s test line, location, protocol, and date—not a forecast for your Australian internet connection.
- Device support: Confirm that the VPN has an app for the device you actually use, and check whether iPlayer viewing is through a browser or its official app.
- Setup and support: Review installation steps and troubleshooting options, including whether the provider offers support if a server fails.
Basic troubleshooting if a connection fails
If you are troubleshooting a VPN connection for a service you are permitted to use, the documented provider steps can help diagnose ordinary connection problems. They do not override the BBC’s stated terms or ensure iPlayer access.

- Confirm the VPN app shows an active connection and that the selected location is the one you intended.
- If a provider’s troubleshooting guide recommends it, try another server in that same country.
- Clear the browser or app cache if the provider recommends doing so, then reopen the service.
- Check the provider’s current device instructions or contact its support team if the VPN itself will not connect.
