You may be able to watch some ORF ON or ServusTV content outside Austria, but neither service offers a blanket guarantee that its entire catalog or every live stream works abroad. Availability depends on the specific program, stream and country you are in. Check the title in the official service while in your destination country; an installed app or supported device does not grant viewing rights.
Why Austrian TV availability changes abroad
Broadcasters license programs and events for particular territories. A service can be free to use and available as an app while a specific film, show or sports stream remains restricted to Austria or another licensed area. ORF says some videos are geoprotected because of territorial rights; ServusTV says its Austrian and German livestreams are intended for viewers in their respective countries, with sports rights varying by event.
That means there is no reliable yes-or-no answer for every destination. Check the exact title or event from the country where you plan to watch, and distinguish on-demand video from a live channel or sports stream.

Check the individual video’s location status
ORF explains that restrictions can apply when it has streaming rights only for Austria or when a license requires a territorial limit, such as for some sports broadcasts. It states that geoprotected videos can only be accessed with an Austrian IP address. See ORF’s explanation of “only available in Austria”.

ORF’s digital program listings and information attached to individual ORF ON videos show whether a title is offered. A location icon indicates Austria-only availability. ORF also says its online rights affect what appears in the catalog: it can offer its own and co-produced works when it holds online rights, but not acquired programs. Check the ORF ON catalog and availability information for the specific video rather than assuming the whole service travels.
Catch-up periods depend on the title
ORF’s 2024 guidance gives maximum legal availability windows of up to 30 days for current information and up to six months for films and series; documentaries may have no expiry date. These are not guarantees that every title stays available that long. Actual availability depends on online rights and licenses. The video’s own listing is the relevant check.

ORF Live supports live channel viewing and up to 24 hours of delayed viewing, according to ORF’s service overview. That time-shift option does not remove territorial restrictions on a particular stream.
Read the restriction shown on the live stream
The ORF Live page reviewed for a particular stream displayed this notice: “For legal reasons, this video may only be played in Austria and without a VPN.” This applies to that referenced stream; it should not be treated as a universal rule for every ORF video. ORF’s notice is a practical reason to follow the restriction displayed on the stream you want to watch.

ServusTV and ServusTV On outside Austria
Choose the stream for the country you are in
ServusTV’s FAQ says the ServusTV Austria livestream is available to users in Austria, while the ServusTV Germany stream is for users in Germany. Some sports rights may cover Austria, Germany and Switzerland, but that depends on the event; content outside its licensed territory may be unavailable. The provider’s FAQ on ServusTV On rights and access does not establish a universal destination-by-destination catalog guarantee.
In practical terms, an Austrian brand name does not mean the Austrian livestream is available in Germany, and a German stream is not a substitute for an event whose rights are limited elsewhere. Open the relevant event or program in the service from your current country and check what is offered there.

Replay availability is not the same as live access
ServusTV says previously broadcast programs are available in its media library for at least seven days when replay rights permit. Some titles, especially films, may have no replay option, and a program may be unavailable in your country. The seven-day statement is conditional, not a promise that every broadcast can be replayed everywhere. Check the title in the ServusTV FAQ and service.

ServusTV On is offered as a free app platform for phones, tablets, notebooks, consoles and smart TVs. Its official app compatibility information includes Amazon Fire TV; supported platforms and requirements can change. Device support only answers whether the app can run on a device. It does not change the country rights for a stream or program.
How to check before you watch
- Identify what you want to watch. Decide whether it is an ORF ON video, ORF Live channel, ServusTV Austria or Germany livestream, replay, or a particular sports event.
- Open the official service from your destination country. Look for an unavailable-in-country message or other location restriction on that exact program or stream.
- For ORF ON, inspect the listing. Check the title details, any location icon and the displayed availability period.
- For ServusTV, check the country edition and event rights. Sports coverage can differ by event and territory; do not assume another country’s stream carries the same program.
- Check device compatibility separately. Confirm that the app works on your device, but treat that as a playback requirement—not proof that the content is licensed where you are.
Why a VPN is not a dependable fix
ServusTV says it does not support VPN services and warns that they can cause black screens, pixelation or app crashes. The ORF Live page cited above explicitly said its particular stream could only be played in Austria and without a VPN. Neither provider’s guidance supports presenting VPN use as a reliable or approved way to access restricted programming. If a title is blocked, use the service’s country-specific availability information rather than assuming a network change will make it playable.
