HomeKit Secure Video lets you watch a camera live and play recorded clips in Apple’s Home app, but 4K support in iOS 27 is reported only for compatible cameras. A camera’s 4K sensor alone does not establish that it records 4K through Apple Home. Check the exact model and firmware with its manufacturer; Apple’s support pages reviewed do not list qualifying models or document a separate 4K control.
Can HomeKit Secure Video record in 4K?
A June 9, 2026 report from HomeKit News says HomeKit Secure Video in iOS 27 can record and display footage at up to 4K on compatible cameras. Treat that as a reported capability, not a guarantee for every 4K camera. Apple’s support documentation reviewed describes HomeKit Secure Video setup and playback but does not confirm the 4K feature or identify compatible models.
Before relying on 4K, ask the manufacturer whether your specific camera model and firmware support 4K recording through HomeKit Secure Video. Resolution in the camera’s own app, or the presence of a 4K sensor, is not by itself confirmation of HomeKit Secure Video 4K.

- A camera added to Apple Home that supports HomeKit Secure Video—not merely generic Apple Home live streaming. Apple’s Home accessories catalog is a starting point for finding compatible cameras, but it does not confirm 4K support for a particular model.
- An iCloud+ plan and a configured home hub. Apple requires iCloud+ to store HomeKit Secure Video footage; its documentation reviewed does not state a special iCloud+ tier or hub model requirement for 4K.
- For 4K specifically, manufacturer confirmation for the exact camera model and firmware.
Apple says HomeKit Secure Video keeps the last 10 days of activity available in Home. The cited plan camera limits are:

These are camera-count limits, not evidence that a plan tier enables 4K. Apple says recorded clips are end-to-end encrypted and do not count against the iCloud storage allowance. See Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video overview for its current details.
Set recording options in the Home app
- Open the Home app and select the camera tile.
- Open the camera settings and review its recording options. Home lets you configure different recording behavior for when people are home and when they are away.
- Choose the behavior you want for each state, then check the camera’s status and notification settings if you want alerts about activity, status changes, or the camera going offline.
- If you are setting up 4K recording, do not assume there is a universal 4K switch in Home. The Apple guide reviewed does not document one; verify model and firmware support with the manufacturer.
Apple notes that a clip can still be recorded even when the home hub cannot analyze it for a specific motion category. Details on camera recording options are in Apple’s iPhone guide.

Watch live video and play a recording
- In the Home app, tap the camera tile to open its live stream.
- To review recorded activity, swipe across the timeline at the bottom of the camera view.
- Tap a clip on the timeline to play it. Tap Live to return to the current stream.

How HomeKit Secure Video handles privacy
Apple describes HomeKit Secure Video as a way to record, analyze, and view camera clips without exposing their video to Apple or another party. The home hub analyzes camera video locally, encrypts clips, and uploads encrypted video and metadata to iCloud, according to Apple Platform Security.

Live streaming is a separate path from recorded-clip analysis and storage. For remote HomeKit IP camera viewing, Apple says the stream is relayed through the home hub in encrypted form, and the hub does not decrypt that live stream. HomeKit renders video through a separate system process; apps cannot access or store that stream or capture screenshots from it. See Apple’s HomeKit accessory security documentation.

- Verify that the exact model supports HomeKit Secure Video, rather than only HomeKit live streaming.
- Ask whether that model and firmware record 4K through HomeKit Secure Video—not just in the maker’s app.
- Check whether its recording behavior matches your needs; do not assume a particular recording mode or feature from the 4K label.
- Confirm power and network requirements for the intended camera placement, and check whether camera features in the manufacturer’s app differ from those available in Apple Home.
- Choose an iCloud+ tier based on the number of cameras you need to store footage from. The cited Apple materials do not say a particular tier unlocks 4K.
Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video documentation and accessory catalog do not provide a definitive model-and-firmware list for 4K recording. Until your manufacturer confirms compatibility for the exact camera, regard 4K through HomeKit Secure Video as unverified.
