Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWait for an application-owned readiness signal, not merely for the Konva container to become visible. Konva draws shapes into canvas pixels, so Playwright can confirm that a DOM element is actionable while the requested scene is still stale, blank, or missing assets. Set a marker such as data-render-state="ready" only after React state, Konva updates, required images and fonts, and any deterministic animation frame are complete; poll that marker, then capture the canvas wrapper.
Why a visible Stage is not proof of a rendered scene
React-Konva exposes React components, but the shapes themselves are canvas output rather than individual DOM nodes. Konva’s testing guidance says appearance questions require real browser pixels, not only DOM assertions: Konva’s React testing guide. A Stage wrapper can exist before an effect has applied the latest scene, before an image has loaded, or while a custom drawing source is still being updated.
Playwright’s locator.screenshot() performs actionability checks and scrolls its target into view before capturing it, as documented for Locator. Those checks answer “can this DOM target be used?” They do not answer “do these canvas pixels represent the scene requested by the test?”
The reliable boundary is therefore an application contract: the app announces readiness after all work relevant to this particular screenshot has finished.

Expose an application-owned readiness contract
Choose a marker with a meaningful definition
Put the marker on a normal DOM wrapper around the Stage. For example:
data-render-state="loading"while the requested scene or its assets are incomplete.data-render-state="ready"only after the scene state has been committed, required assets have loaded, and any required post-load update has reached the canvas.data-render-state="error"when rendering cannot complete, with a separate diagnostic attribute or message.
The marker is not a selector for a Konva shape. It is an explicit signal owned by your application. Include a render generation or scene identifier if several renders can be requested in succession, so a previous successful frame cannot satisfy a later wait.
React-Konva example
import { useEffect, useState } from 'react';
import { Stage, Layer, Rect, Image as KonvaImage } from 'react-konva';
import useImage from 'use-image';
export function Preview({ scene }) {
const [status, setStatus] = useState('loading');
const [image] = useImage(scene.imageUrl);
useEffect(() => {
setStatus('loading');
}, [scene.id]);
useEffect(() => {
if (!image) return;
// React-Konva has received the scene and the required image is available.
// Set ready only after the state represented by this scene is complete.
setStatus('ready');
}, [image, scene]);
return (
<div data-testid="preview" data-render-state={status} data-scene-id={scene.id}>
<Stage width={800} height={600}>
<Layer>
<Rect x={0} y={0} width={800} height={600} fill={scene.background} />
{image && <KonvaImage image={image} x={40} y={40} />}
</Layer>
</Stage>
</div>
);
}
The exact point at which you set ready depends on your editor. If fonts, multiple images, filters, a mutable source canvas, or a video frame affect the result, include those operations in the contract. An image-loading pattern based on use-image is shown in Konva’s React image guide.
Wait for readiness in Playwright
Recommended test flow
- Navigate to the editor.
- Trigger the action that requests the scene.
- Wait for the application marker and, when needed, verify its scene or generation identifier.
- Freeze or select a deterministic animation frame.
- Capture the wrapper or use a screenshot assertion.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('captures the rendered preview', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/editor');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Render preview' }).click();
const preview = page.getByTestId('preview');
await expect(preview).toHaveAttribute('data-render-state', 'ready');
await expect(preview).toHaveAttribute('data-scene-id', 'scene-42');
await preview.screenshot({ path: 'preview.png' });
});
A predicate is useful when readiness includes several conditions. page.waitForFunction() resolves when its predicate becomes truthy and polls with requestAnimationFrame by default; see the Page API.

await page.waitForFunction(() => {
const el = document.querySelector('[data-testid="preview"]');
return el?.getAttribute('data-render-state') === 'ready' &&
el?.getAttribute('data-scene-id') === 'scene-42';
});
await page.locator('[data-testid="preview"]').screenshot({ path: 'preview.png' });
Give the wait a meaningful timeout and let a timeout fail the test. Do not catch it and take an unconditional screenshot: that hides the rendering failure you are trying to detect. If you use a locator-based wait function available in your Playwright version, apply the same predicate to the application marker.
Konva redraw behavior and the limits of automatic drawing
In the normal auto-draw configuration, Konva 8 and later mark a layer dirty after attribute changes and schedule a redraw on the next animation frame. Konva’s documentation states that calling draw() or batchDraw() after every shape change is normally unnecessary: Automatic Redraws. Confirm your installed version and configuration before relying on that behavior.
Manual drawing can still matter when updates occur outside Konva’s awareness—for example, a mutable source canvas or video frame—or when Konva.autoDrawEnabled is disabled. Even then, a manual draw() call is an implementation detail, not a universal completion event. Set your readiness marker after the application has performed the relevant update and reached the frame your test requires.
Images, fonts, and other asynchronous boundaries
External assets frequently explain “sometimes blank” screenshots. Track every asset that contributes to the requested scene. For images, wait for the loader to return the image and for the corresponding React-Konva node update to be applied. If web fonts alter text metrics, wait for the fonts your scene uses before declaring readiness. If data arrives from an API, include the successful response and scene commit in the same state machine.

Do not substitute an arbitrary delay for these events. A one-second waitForTimeout can be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one. A single frame delay is appropriate only when your contract specifically means “the next browser frame”; it cannot replace waiting for network data or assets.
Animations and screenshot determinism
For a continuously animated Konva scene, “ready” must include a frame policy. Pause the animation, set a known frame or timestamp, and then expose readiness. Playwright’s screenshot option animations: 'disabled' targets CSS animations, CSS transitions and Web Animations; it should not be assumed to stop a Konva animation loop. Control Konva animation in application code instead.
Playwright’s expect(locator).toHaveScreenshot() waits for two consecutive screenshots to be identical before comparing the result, which helps with transient pixel changes. Its behavior is documented in LocatorAssertions. Stable pixels alone do not prove semantic correctness: a blank or stale canvas can also be stable. Combine screenshot stability with your readiness marker.
Pixel-level validation and device scale
When the requirement is visual correctness, run the test in a real browser and inspect screenshot pixels or compare against a baseline. Konva’s guidance covers pixel readback through a layer context and accounting for the layer’s pixel ratio; see its testing documentation. Keep viewport, device scale factor, fonts and browser version consistent with your baseline policy, or intentional rendering differences will appear as failures.

Troubleshooting common failures
The wait times out
- Marker never changes: inspect the React effect and confirm the requested scene ID reaches the component.
- Image remains unavailable: check the image URL, CORS policy and loader error path; expose
errorrather than silently staying in loading. - Wrong generation becomes ready: include a scene or render-generation value in the predicate.
- Custom canvas or video is stale: perform the external draw/update before setting ready, or enable the appropriate Konva redraw configuration.
The screenshot is stable but wrong
Verify that the readiness marker describes the requested scene, not just that the wrapper mounted. Compare pixels with toHaveScreenshot(), and inspect the layer’s pixel ratio when reading coordinates. A stable blank canvas is still a failed render.
Extra calls to draw() do not help
Check whether the app uses Konva 8+ auto-draw and whether the change actually occurred through Konva attributes. For mutable source canvases, videos, or disabled auto-draw, update and draw explicitly, then signal readiness from the application.
Only CI fails
Look for slower asset loading, missing fonts, different device scale factors, animation timing and browser-version differences. Replace fixed sleeps with event-based readiness and make the animation frame deterministic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Performance, reliability, and timeout choices
Event-based waits return as soon as the scene is ready and avoid a fixed delay on fast runs. Set the timeout according to the slowest legitimate asset or data path in your environment, while keeping failures visible. Record the scene ID and readiness state in test diagnostics so a timeout identifies which contract was not fulfilled. Keep the marker close to the DOM wrapper being captured; this makes failures easy to inspect without pretending that the wrapper itself proves canvas correctness.

Is there an official Konva renderComplete() promise?
No universal API is established for this workflow. Readiness must match your app’s React effects, assets, external drawing sources and animation policy.
Can I wait for the canvas element itself?
You can wait for the canvas wrapper to exist and be actionable, but that does not prove that its pixels contain the requested Konva scene.
Should every test use screenshot comparison?
Use pixel comparison when appearance is the requirement. For state or interaction tests, a readiness marker plus targeted assertions may be sufficient; choose the assertion that matches what the test is meant to prove.
