ApiFlash already waits for network activity to become idle by default. If the screenshot depends on a specific JavaScript-rendered element, add wait_for with that element’s CSS selector; use delay only for residual work such as an animation. There is no documented setting that guarantees every script and future page update has finished, so verify the resulting capture.

Choose the right ApiFlash wait condition

“JavaScript finished” is not a single reliable browser state: timers, analytics, polling, animations and application updates can continue after navigation. ApiFlash offers several readiness conditions, a selector wait and a bounded delay. Choose the condition that corresponds to the content your screenshot needs.

Parameter or condition What it waits for Limit or behavior
wait_until=dom_loaded The initial HTML document to finish loading; it does not wait for stylesheets and images. ApiFlash documents a wait_until timeout default of 30 seconds, configurable from 1 to 30 seconds. If the condition is not reached in time, capture proceeds with what has loaded.
wait_until=page_loaded The whole page to load, including dependent resources such as stylesheets and images. Same documented 1–30-second timeout behavior.
wait_until=network_idle The page to load and network activity to become idle. This is ApiFlash’s default. Same documented timeout behavior.
wait_for A matching CSS selector to appear, useful when the relevant content is inserted late. ApiFlash says the capture aborts with an error if no matching element appears after 15 seconds. A match confirms the element appeared, not that its contents have stopped changing.
delay A fixed pause after the page is loaded. Documented range is 0–10 seconds. Useful for residual timing or animations, but less precise than waiting for a meaningful element.

These defaults and limits are documented in the ApiFlash Screenshot API documentation. Its FAQ also addresses selector waits, delays, lazy loading and cache behavior.

Make a request that waits for rendered content

Send the request to https://api.apiflash.com/v1/urltoimage with a valid access key. Parameters can be sent as a GET query string or POST form data. For example, this GET URL waits for an element with the class rendered-result:

Prefer a meaningful selector over a guessed pause

If the target content is added asynchronously, use wait_for to express the condition the screenshot needs. Select an element that represents the completed content rather than a loading shell or placeholder. ApiFlash documents waiting for selector presence; it does not document a guarantee that the element’s text or child content has finished updating after it appears.

Use a delay only for the remaining work

If a transition or animation continues after the relevant element appears, add a short delay within the documented 0–10-second range. A delay is a fixed wait, not proof that a script completed. If the page’s load condition is wrong for your use case, choose wait_until deliberately: dom_loaded is earlier, page_loaded includes dependent resources, and network_idle waits for network quiet.

Handle lazy-loaded content

Lazy-loaded items may not exist until they are brought into view. ApiFlash documents wait_for for waiting on a lazy-loaded element and provides scroll_page to scroll through the page, which can trigger lazy loading or animations. Use scrolling when the target site requires it, then inspect the screenshot: loading behavior varies by site.

Diagnose timeouts, stale shots and visual differences

  • Capture is missing content after a wait timeout: ApiFlash proceeds with whatever has loaded when the wait_until timeout is reached. Check the selected readiness condition and timeout range, then inspect whether the target content is actually present.
  • The request errors after waiting for an element: Confirm the CSS selector matches an element on the main page and that the element is added within the documented 15-second selector-wait period. A selector that matches only a placeholder may also be too early to indicate the final content.
  • Content appears only after scrolling: Enable scroll_page and check the resulting capture for the target content.
  • The image looks outdated despite correct waits: Identical requests may use cached screenshots. Set fresh=true to force a new capture, as described in the ApiFlash FAQ.
  • The page needs a login: ApiFlash documents supplying authentication through headers or cookies; its FAQ also mentions JavaScript injection to automate login. Protect session credentials and access keys.
  • The page is blocked: Bot protection can prevent access, and ApiFlash notes that some strict protections may still block captures. Its FAQ mentions a supplied proxy as a possible approach; this is an access issue, not a wait setting.
  • Fonts look different: ApiFlash captures with Chrome on Linux, where available system fonts can differ from other operating systems. Its FAQ recommends serving the site’s own fonts and warns that custom headers applied to all requests can interfere with external font loading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ApiFlash have a setting that waits until every JavaScript script has finished?

No universal completion setting is documented. Its waits cover load state, network idle, a selector’s appearance or a bounded delay; page scripts can continue updating afterward.

Can I wait for a specific element without adding a delay?

Yes. Set wait_for to the element’s CSS selector. ApiFlash documents an error if it does not appear after 15 seconds.
