In CloudConvert’s capture-website task, set wait_for_element to a CSS selector that appears when the JavaScript-rendered content you need is ready. Use a specific content-ready selector rather than body when the page shell loads before its data. This waits for the selected element; it is not a documented guarantee that all JavaScript or network activity has finished.

Set a selector for the content that must be ready

CloudConvert’s Website Screenshot API says its headless Chrome browser waits for a custom CSS selector. Its example uses body, but that can be too broad: many applications add the page shell before fetching and rendering the content you want to capture. Choose a selector tied to the result, chart, or other content that matters.

For example, if the page adds #results-ready only after rendering the results, use that selector in the capture task:

{
  "tasks": {
    "capture-page": {
      "operation": "capture-website",
      "url": "https://example.com/page",
      "output_format": "png",
      "wait_for_element": "#results-ready"
    },
    "export-capture": {
      "operation": "export/url",
      "input": "capture-page"
    }
  }
}

The URL and output format are required for the capture operation. The selector is illustrative: replace it with a CSS selector that the target page actually uses and that corresponds to the content you need. CloudConvert’s documentation does not specify whether the element must be visible or merely present in the DOM, or what happens if it never appears.

Create and retrieve the CloudConvert job

  1. Submit the job. Send a POST request to https://api.cloudconvert.com/v2/jobs with the required authorization and a job payload such as the one above. The capture-website task captures the page; export/url makes the resulting output available through an export link.
  2. Handle completion separately from page readiness. Creating a job asynchronously returns it in processing status. Wait for the job to finish or use a webhook to learn when it does; setting wait_for_element is a page-capture setting, not a replacement for job-completion handling.
  3. Choose an output suited to the result. CloudConvert documents PDF as an available capture output; its Website Screenshot API page describes PNG and JPG screenshots. Options vary by format, so consult the operation documentation for the format you choose.

CloudConvert documents a synchronous create-and-wait endpoint, but cautions that long-running requests can hit network timeouts and queueing can extend processing. Its Jobs API recommends webhooks for long-running work. The Jobs API documentation also says jobs are automatically deleted 24 hours after they have ended; check CloudConvert’s current data and retention terms for broader handling details.

What selector waiting does—and does not—establish

A selector gives the capture task a concrete page condition: wait for a particular element associated with the content you want. It does not, based on CloudConvert’s published description, establish that every asynchronous component has finished, that network activity has stopped, or that animations and late updates are complete. If content continues to change after the selected element appears, choose a selector whose appearance better represents readiness, if the page provides one.

CloudConvert’s documentation does not state the selector wait’s timeout, whether it checks visibility or DOM presence, or its failure behavior when the selector never appears. The capture operation lists a general task timeout that defaults to five hours, but the documentation does not connect that value to selector waiting. Do not treat it as a documented selector-wait limit.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely issue What to check
The screenshot has the page layout but not the data The selected element appears before the JavaScript-rendered data is ready, or the selector is too generic. Use a selector associated with the rendered result rather than a shell element such as body.
The selector never appears The selector may be wrong for that page or its target state may not be reached. Verify the selector against the page’s DOM and confirm the page reaches the expected state. CloudConvert does not document the resulting failure behavior.
The job is still processing after capture setup Page readiness and job completion are separate stages; queueing or a long-running job may also delay completion. Track the asynchronous job to completion or use a webhook. Consider synchronous waiting only when its timeout risk is acceptable.
The returned file is not the desired kind Output options differ by format. Set output_format to the required format and check the capture operation’s format-specific options.

CloudConvert capture details

CloudConvert describes its Website Screenshot API as based on the latest version of Chrome for PNG and JPG screenshots. The service page also describes full-page screenshots and viewport and zoom controls. It says cookie consent banners are automatically accepted and closed before capture; that vendor statement should not be taken to mean every consent tool or site behavior is handled.
