In current Selenium Python, that normally means WebDriverWait with an Expected Condition such as a visible report container. A navigation reaching readyState="complete" does not guarantee that a JavaScript application has finished rendering.
PhantomJS is a legacy constraint: its upstream project is archived and development is suspended. The practical code below uses maintained Chrome in headless mode, while the PhantomJS section explains what to do if you must preserve an old installation.
Use an explicit wait, not a fixed sleep
Selenium navigation waits for a configured document readyState; the default page-load strategy waits for complete before returning control. That covers resources represented by the document, but JavaScript can still fetch data, replace markup, remove a spinner or hydrate a single-page application afterward. Waiting for the condition that makes the image useful avoids capturing an intermediate state. Selenium describes these waiting strategies.
A fixed time.sleep(3) is both slow on fast pages and unreliable on slow ones. An explicit wait polls until a condition is true or a bounded timeout expires. Selenium’s Python API uses a 0.5-second default polling interval, and until() raises TimeoutException when the deadline is reached. See the Python WebDriverWait API.

Current Selenium Python example
Install Selenium and a browser driver appropriate for your environment. This example uses Chrome headless mode and waits for the report area to be visible before saving a PNG.

Why visibility is usually the right condition
presence_of_element_located succeeds when an element exists in the DOM, even if CSS hides it. visibility_of_element_located waits until it is displayed with a non-zero rendered state, which is generally closer to “will appear in the screenshot.” If the element can be visible before its data arrives, wait for a more specific signal instead.

For a page that populates a table, for example, combine an element condition with a meaningful text or row count:

Timeouts, polling and exception handling
WebDriverWait(driver, 15) expresses a maximum of 15 seconds, not a guaranteed delay. The capture proceeds immediately when the condition succeeds. Set the timeout from the page’s normal worst-case load plus a margin, and make it configurable rather than embedding different sleeps throughout a codebase.
Handle expiration according to the job’s purpose:
- Batch capture: catch
TimeoutException, log the URL and condition, and continue with the next page. - Interactive debugging: save the current HTML or a diagnostic screenshot before quitting.
- Critical reports: fail the job and alert rather than silently capturing an incomplete image.
The default poll interval is 0.5 seconds. You can override it when a very fast condition or an expensive check warrants a different cadence:

An implicit wait changes every element lookup, while an explicit wait repeatedly performs lookups itself; Selenium warns that mixing them can produce unpredictable elapsed times. Prefer explicit waits for screenshot readiness. See the warning in Selenium’s waiting documentation.
Waiting for JavaScript application state
For a single-page app, identify a state transition that is stable across runs: a “Results loaded” status, removal of a loading overlay, a populated row, or an application flag deliberately exposed for automation. Waiting for a generic body element is usually too early because it exists before the app has rendered.

Waiting for network idle is not a universal Selenium Expected Condition; a page may keep analytics or streaming requests open. A DOM state that corresponds to the required visual result is more deterministic.
Full-page and visual details
save_screenshot() captures the current viewport in the standard Selenium workflow. Set the window size before waiting when the layout is responsive, and use a browser-specific full-page technique only after confirming that it matches your target browser and Selenium version. A condition can be correct while the viewport is wrong, so make dimensions part of the capture configuration.

PhantomJS: what the legacy setup means
PhantomJS was a headless WebKit browser with screenshot support, but the upstream repository is archived and identifies 2.1 as its latest stable release. The maintainer’s archiving notice says 2.1.1 would remain the last known stable version. Selenium’s JavaScript binding history records removal of native PhantomJS support and points users toward Chrome or Firefox headless mode; that history is specific to the JavaScript binding, not a complete Python compatibility matrix. Read the change history.
For a legacy Python system that already has PhantomJS, pin the exact PhantomJS binary, Selenium package and operating-system dependencies used by that system. Do not assume a current Selenium release will work. Verify the combination in an isolated environment and document it. The wait logic remains the same conceptually: navigate, wait for a meaningful condition, save, and close the driver. For new automation, a maintained Chrome or Firefox driver in headless mode is the safer choice.

Common failures and fixes
TimeoutException
Cause: the selector is wrong, the content never arrives, a login or consent screen blocks it, or the timeout is too short. Fix: inspect the DOM, use a stable selector, wait for the actual completion signal, and log the URL and page state when the timeout occurs. Increasing the number without correcting the condition only delays failure.
The element exists but the screenshot is blank or incomplete
Cause: presence was mistaken for visibility, or the app replaced the element after the wait. Fix: use visibility or a page-specific condition, then capture immediately; if replacement is expected, wait for the final text, row count or overlay disappearance.
Intermittent captures
Cause: a race with asynchronous rendering, animations, lazy content or responsive layout. Fix: wait for a stable visual signal, set the viewport before navigation, and avoid capturing during transitions. Use a custom condition when a built-in one cannot express readiness.
The script hangs longer than expected
Cause: implicit and explicit waits were combined, multiplying lookup delays. Fix: remove the global implicit wait and use one explicit timeout for each readiness condition.
PhantomJS cannot start or behaves differently
Cause: its suspended, archived codebase and old driver assumptions. Fix: preserve a pinned legacy environment only when migration is impossible; otherwise move the capture to headless Chrome or Firefox and re-check selectors and rendering.

Operational and cost considerations
- Reliability: condition-based waits fail with a clear timeout instead of silently choosing an arbitrary delay. Record the selector, timeout and exception for each URL.
- Performance: shorter successful waits finish as soon as the page is ready; excessive timeouts affect only pages that miss the condition. Reuse a driver carefully in batches, resetting state between unrelated sites.
- Rendering differences: browser engine, viewport, fonts, device scale and authentication state can change the image. Keep those inputs fixed when visual consistency matters.

FAQ
Should I wait for document.readyState?
Navigation already waits for the configured page-load strategy, normally complete. For JavaScript-rendered content, wait for the specific element or state the screenshot must contain.
What happens when an explicit wait expires?
WebDriverWait.until() raises TimeoutException. Catch it to retry, skip and log, or fail the job according to the importance of the image.

Can I keep using PhantomJS?
Only as a pinned legacy environment that you have verified. Its upstream project is suspended and archived, and current Python/Selenium compatibility is not established by the available documentation.
Is a longer timeout always safer?
No. It can accommodate slow pages but cannot fix an incorrect selector, blocked login or permanently missing state. Match the condition first, then set a bounded timeout based on expected behavior.
