To visually test React components with Storybook, create stories for the UI states you care about, then run screenshot-based visual tests that compare those renders with a previously reviewed baseline. Storybook documents a hosted cross-browser route using its @chromatic-com/storybook addon and Chromatic. Add interaction tests separately when you need to verify what happens after a user acts.

What Storybook visual tests check

A Storybook story is an example of a component in a particular state and configuration. For instance, a button might have stories for its default, disabled, loading, and error states. These examples can serve as visual test cases: the test renders each story, captures its appearance, and compares the screenshot with a prior baseline so changes can be reviewed.

Storybook’s documentation describes visual tests as checks for bugs in UI appearance. They can surface changes in layout, color, size, and contrast. A visual difference is a signal to inspect, not proof that the change is a defect: an intended design update should be reviewed and accepted as a new baseline.

Prepare stories that cover meaningful states

Choose states deliberately

Start with states where a visual regression would matter to users or reviewers. Include important variations in content, layout, and component status rather than treating one default render as sufficient coverage. A story should make its state and configuration clear, so a reviewer can understand what the screenshot is meant to show.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Make rendered output reviewable

Stories work best as stable, representative examples. If a component depends on user input or an action, define a clear initial state for the visual render. Keep visual-state coverage distinct from checks that require an action and a resulting assertion; those need interaction tests.

Set up Storybook’s documented hosted visual-testing workflow

Storybook’s Visual Testing guide documents the official @chromatic-com/storybook addon and Chromatic, which Storybook describes as its cloud service for cross-browser visual testing. Installation commands and compatibility vary by Storybook release. The cited Storybook 8 guide states that Storybook 7.6 or higher is required; consult the guide for your installed version before copying its CLI command.

  1. Confirm your Storybook version and framework, then open the matching Storybook visual testing guide.
  2. Follow that guide’s version-matched command to install @chromatic-com/storybook with the Storybook CLI. Do not assume a command from a different major-version guide applies unchanged.
  3. Use Storybook’s Visual Tests panel to run checks against your stories and inspect the resulting visual changes.
  4. Review differences in context. If the change is intentional, update the baseline through the workflow shown in your version’s guide; if not, fix the component and run the checks again.

This route is appropriate when the team wants a documented hosted workflow with cross-browser visual checks. The cited documentation does not establish a neutral cost or performance comparison against local testing.

Add interaction tests for actions and outcomes

A screenshot answers “what did this state look like?” It does not establish that a button, menu, or form behaves correctly. For an interactive component, write a story for its initial state and use a play function to simulate a user action and assert the expected result. Storybook’s interaction-testing documentation explains this story-based approach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Storybook interaction testing guide covers running interaction tests in the Storybook UI and related workflows. Use these assertions for behavior that matters, such as opening a menu or showing a validation message after submission; retain visual checks to catch unintended appearance changes in representative states.

Use the Vitest addon for browser-based story tests

Storybook’s Vitest addon transforms stories into tests and runs them as browser-based component tests. Its documentation recommends browser mode with Playwright Chromium for real-browser fidelity. The addon requires a Vite-based Storybook framework, so it is not a universal fit for every React setup.

Check the Vitest addon documentation for current installation steps and framework compatibility. The documentation gives specific conditions for Next.js frameworks; verify those against your project rather than assuming any Next.js Storybook configuration is supported. The addon’s documented workflows include running tests in the Storybook UI, editor, CLI, and CI.

Follow the guide matching your version; the cited Storybook 8 guide says Storybook 7.6 or higher. Teams seeking hosted cross-browser visual review.
Storybook interaction tests Does a simulated user action produce the expected result? Stories can use a play function with assertions; consult the version-matched interaction guide for setup. Important actions and user flows whose outcomes need assertions.
Storybook Vitest addon Do story-derived browser component tests pass? Requires a Vite-based Storybook framework; check documented framework-specific conditions, including those for Next.js. Teams wanting story-based browser tests in local and CI workflows.

A practical approach is to use visual checks across representative story states, then add interaction assertions for key user flows. Coverage, browser needs, framework compatibility, execution location, and review workflow are useful selection criteria. The Vitest addon is incompatible with the framework

The Vitest addon requires a Vite-based Storybook framework. Check the compatibility section of its documentation, especially if the project uses a Next.js framework, before attempting setup.

A visual test reports a difference

Compare the changed render with the story’s intended state. Decide whether the difference is an unwanted regression or an intentional design change; fix the former or review the latter as a baseline update. A screenshot difference alone does not test the component’s behavior.

A behavior issue is not caught by screenshot comparison

Add a story interaction test with a play function that performs the relevant action and asserts the result. Visual and interaction checks cover different failure modes.
