To visually test GitHub pull requests, run browser screenshot assertions in a pull-request workflow, compare each captured state with a reviewed baseline, and publish the test report or images where reviewers can inspect them. A mismatch is a prompt for review—not proof of a defect. The team must decide whether to fix the interface or approve an intentional design change.
What visual testing on every pull request means
It means that each pull request covered by your repository’s workflow policy runs visual checks against selected pages or interface states. It does not automatically test every screen, browser, viewport, or interaction. You choose the coverage by writing tests for the states that matter.
A practical workflow has four parts: capture meaningful browser states, compare them with reviewed reference images, run those assertions in pull-request CI, and expose the result and image evidence to reviewers. GitHub Actions supports the pull_request event, and Playwright documents a GitHub Actions setup that runs tests and uploads artifacts. GitHub Actions pull_request event · Playwright CI
Choose where screenshot comparisons live
For a team already using Playwright, Playwright Test’s built-in screenshot assertions are a direct way to start: references live with the test project, and the team reviews and updates them. Hosted services are alternatives when their review flow better suits the stack or team process; they are not prerequisites.

| Approach | Useful when | Ownership and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright Test screenshot assertions | You want a native test workflow and version-controlled baselines. | Your team owns baseline review, updates, and consistency of the capture environment. |
| Chromatic | You want hosted visual review and pull-request checks, particularly if its supported workflow fits your existing stack. | Requires service setup and a project token. Check Chromatic’s current plan and limits before adopting it. See its GitHub Actions integration and Playwright integration. |
| Percy with Playwright | You already use Playwright and want a hosted comparison workflow or optional CI gate. | Requires Percy setup and a token, and makes the workflow dependent on a hosted service. See Percy’s Playwright integration. |
If you already use Storybook, Vitest, or Cypress, first check how visual checks fit your existing component and browser-test workflow; the evidence here establishes specific integrations for Playwright and hosted options, not a universal best choice for every stack. With any hosted service, verify current capabilities and plans directly rather than assuming a feature or price.
Add meaningful Playwright screenshot assertions
Use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion at stable, representative UI states: for example, a high-value route after its primary content loads, a form showing validation, or a component in a documented state. Keep each capture focused on an outcome the team wants to protect. A broad test suite should deliberately include important responsive layouts and interactions rather than assuming one screenshot covers them all. The Playwright visual comparisons guide explains screenshot assertions and snapshot handling.
Example test file, such as tests/visual.spec.ts:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/');
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Welcome' })).toBeVisible();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home-page.png', {
fullPage: true,
});
});
Use a meaningful readiness condition instead of relying only on elapsed time. The heading check above illustrates one such condition; adapt the locator to the content that signals the page is ready. If the site loads data asynchronously, make the test wait for the relevant state before capturing.

Create and review the first baseline
On an initial run, Playwright creates reference images. Treat those images as proposed expectations, not automatically approved truth: inspect them for correct content, layout, and capture conditions, then commit the accepted baselines with the tests. On later runs, the assertion compares the new screenshot against the reference.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Update a baseline only for an accepted change
When a UI change is intentional, regenerate the snapshots with:
npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Inspect the changed images and diff, then commit the approved baseline update with the UI change. Do not make snapshot updating an automatic response to every failure: that would turn a useful regression signal into an unreviewed overwrite.

Run visual checks on pull requests with GitHub Actions
Create a workflow file under .github/workflows/. This example runs on pull requests targeting main, installs the project’s dependencies and Playwright browsers, runs the test suite, and uploads Playwright’s report even when tests fail. Adapt the package-manager commands and Node version to your project.
name: Visual tests
on:
pull_request:
branches: [main]
jobs:
visual-tests:
runs-on: ubuntu-latest
steps:
- uses: actions/checkout@v4
- uses: actions/setup-node@v4
with:
node-version: 20
- name: Install dependencies
run: npm ci
- name: Install Playwright browsers
run: npx playwright install --with-deps
- name: Run Playwright tests
run: npx playwright test
- name: Upload Playwright report
if: always()
uses: actions/upload-artifact@v4
with:
name: playwright-report
path: playwright-report/
retention-days: 14
The if: always() condition lets the artifact-upload step run after a test failure, so the failure can still be investigated. Confirm your Playwright configuration generates the report at the path you upload; adjust the artifact path or reporter configuration if needed. Playwright’s CI documentation also shows a container-based approach for keeping the runner environment consistent. Playwright CI setup and artifacts
Make the result useful in the pull request
- Keep the workflow status visible as a pull-request check, and configure repository branch protection if visual tests must pass before merging.
- Upload the report or relevant test results even when assertions fail, so reviewers can inspect expected and actual images rather than seeing only a red check.
- For a mismatch, inspect the image diff and the underlying page state. Fix an unintended change, or deliberately update and review the baseline if the new appearance is intended.
The screenshot comparison signals pixel differences; it cannot determine whether those differences are bugs, approved redesigns, or harmless rendering noise. Human review remains part of the process.

Keep screenshots stable enough to trust
Screenshot output can change with operating system, browser and browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate baselines and run CI in the same environment where practical. Pin the browser and runner conditions, and consider Playwright’s documented container image when you need a consistent CI environment. Control volatile page content
- Dates and time-dependent labels: freeze or control the test clock or content.
- Animations and transitions: disable them for the capture where appropriate.
- Randomized or externally sourced data: use deterministic fixtures or a controlled test environment.
- Asynchronously loaded assets: wait for the relevant content or asset to settle before capture.
- Content that is irrelevant to the visual assertion: Playwright supports custom screenshot stylesheets through
stylePath, which can hide volatile elements.
Set comparison tolerance deliberately
There is no universal pixel-difference threshold that suits every interface and environment. Start with strict comparisons, inspect representative diffs, then tune only where known rendering noise justifies it. Playwright documents options including maxDiffPixels and stylePath; a looser threshold can also conceal a real small regression, so keep the choice tied to the pages and capture conditions you actually review.
Scale the suite without weakening the required check
As the suite grows, prioritize meaningful coverage and keep the full required check authoritative. Playwright documents --only-changed as a preliminary heuristic that can run likely affected test files first, but it can miss tests; run the full suite afterward rather than treating changed-test selection as a replacement for complete checks. Visual coverage is a trade-off: each additional state can catch more unintended changes, while also adding capture and review work. Choose states based on product risk—important routes, high-impact components, and layouts users rely on—then expand when missed coverage or repeated review findings justify it.
Protect secrets and untrusted pull requests
Keep CI credentials to the least access the workflow needs. If using a hosted visual testing service, store its project token as a protected secret and do not expose it to untrusted pull-request code. Configure behavior for third-party contributor pull requests in line with your repository’s security settings. A visual test that is easy to trigger should not make secret-bearing jobs available to code you have not chosen to trust.
Troubleshoot common visual-test failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A screenshot fails with a broad, unexpected diff. | Changed runner, operating system, browser version, or screenshot settings. | Compare baseline and CI capture environments; restore consistent runner and browser conditions before changing thresholds. |
| Only text, timestamps, or rotating content differs. | Volatile content was not controlled at capture time. | Use deterministic test data, wait for the intended page state, or apply a screenshot stylesheet to hide irrelevant volatile elements. |
| The page is blank or partly rendered in the image. | The test captured before the meaningful UI state or assets were ready. | Wait for a relevant locator or state, and investigate failed or delayed page resources rather than simply adding an arbitrary long delay. |
| A baseline update makes the check pass but hides an unexplained change. | Snapshots were updated without reviewing the diff. | Revert or inspect the update, decide whether the UI change is intentional, and commit only reviewed reference images. |
| Reviewers see a failed check but no evidence. | Artifacts are not uploaded on failure, or the configured report path is wrong. | Use an unconditional artifact step such as if: always() and verify the generated report path in CI. |
| A hosted check cannot authenticate. | Token missing, misconfigured, or unavailable under the workflow’s pull-request security policy. | Check secret configuration and trusted-event behavior; never solve this by exposing a token to untrusted code. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot from a URL without setting up a browser runner, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call GET endpoint can return an image or PDF; that is useful for capture jobs, but it does not replace Playwright assertions, reviewed baselines, or a pull-request regression gate.
cURL example (save a WebP response):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Replace the example URL with the page you want to capture and provide your API key. For options and response details, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
- Cookie banners and consent overlays are accepted or removed before capture; newsletter popups and chat widgets are also removed. Each of these steps can be turned off.
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
- An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. - The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
