Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How do I add visual comparison testing to a Playwright test? Use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion to capture a page or a specific locator, review the first image as a baseline, then compare later runs against it. Reliable results depend on controlling the page state and keeping the baseline and test environment consistent.
Set up a screenshot assertion
These assertions are part of Playwright Test, not a standalone browser-checking API. Add a test that reaches the UI state you want to protect, then use the page or locator assertion. For example:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('checkout summary matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/checkout');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Continue as guest' }).click();
await expect(page.getByTestId('order-summary')).toHaveScreenshot('order-summary.png');
});
The example assumes your app provides that route, button, and test ID; replace them with selectors and a flow from your own UI. A named locator screenshot makes the comparison focus clear. Use await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() when the test owns the whole page composition instead. See Playwright’s Visual comparisons guide and PageAssertions reference.
Create and review the first baseline
When no reference image exists, the first run creates one rather than proving the UI is correct. Inspect that generated image, confirm it represents the intended state, and commit it with the test. Later runs capture the page again and compare the result with that reference.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Run the focused test in your chosen baseline environment.
- Open the generated screenshot and check layout, content, fonts, and any dynamic regions.
- Commit the accepted reference image alongside the test.
- Run the test again to verify that the comparison succeeds under the same conditions.
Make the captured state stable
Playwright waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before it compares a page screenshot. That settling behavior helps avoid capturing a page mid-change, but it cannot make application data or rendering identical across machines. Before the assertion, drive the app into a deterministic state: use predictable test data, finish any required interaction, and avoid time-dependent content where possible.
Choose the comparison scope
- Full page: use a page screenshot when the test is responsible for the overall composition, including interactions among sections.
- Focused locator: use a locator screenshot when a component or region is the contract under test. This can avoid unrelated page changes causing failures.
Handle volatile regions deliberately
If a timestamp, rotating image, or other genuinely variable region is not part of the behavior being tested, stabilize its data or mask/filter it rather than loosening the entire comparison. Playwright’s visual guide documents stylesheet-based filtering, and screenshot assertions provide capture options; consult the PageAssertions API for the options supported by your installed version. Keep important content visible in the comparison so that masking does not conceal a real regression.

Keep the rendering environment consistent
Playwright’s Visual comparisons documentation notes: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” Generate and compare baselines in a consistent environment, including the browser and operating system. Avoid generating a baseline on one setup and expecting pixel-identical results from a different setup unless cross-environment variation is an intentional part of the test strategy.
A same-environment baseline is usually the clearest way to detect regressions. If your goal is browser or operating-system coverage, treat each intended environment as its own comparison target and manage its expected images accordingly. The trade-off is a more explicit baseline set rather than assuming one image represents every rendering environment.

Set comparison tolerance only for observed noise
Start with strict defaults. If the actual diff shows small rendering variation that your team has decided is acceptable, tune the assertion with maxDiffPixels, maxDiffPixelRatio, or the color threshold. These options address different tolerances, so choose based on the mismatch you see rather than increasing limits until the test passes. The SnapshotAssertions reference describes assertion options; TestConfig documents configuration for common expectations.
You can set policy per assertion for an exceptional comparison or centrally when the same policy is appropriate across a suite or project. Keep tolerances narrow enough to catch the smallest visual change your team cares about, and review diffs whenever a tolerance changes. Do not treat a passing comparison as meaningful if the allowed variation can hide the layout or styling regressions under test.

Update baselines for intentional changes
When a UI change is intentional, regenerate references with Playwright’s documented --update-snapshots workflow. Review every changed image before committing it with the product change; updating snapshots without review can bless an accidental regression as the new expected result. The Visual comparisons guide covers baseline updates. Playwright’s release notes are useful when checking whether behavior or available options differ in the version installed by your project.
Debug a visual mismatch
- Compare expected, actual, and diff images. Identify whether the mismatch is a broad layout shift, changed content, or small rendering noise.
- Check the test state. Confirm the same route, data, interactions, and UI state were reached before capture.
- Check environment consistency. Verify browser, operating system, and rendering mode match the baseline setup.
- Inspect dynamic areas. Stabilize the source of volatile content or exclude only the region that is genuinely outside the assertion’s scope.
- Use the trace for context. Playwright’s Trace Viewer can help inspect action screenshots and the page state around the failing step.
- Update only for an accepted visual change. If the difference is intended, regenerate and inspect the baseline; otherwise fix the UI or test setup.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot outside a Playwright Test assertion, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; its API also accepts common screenshot-API parameter names.
