To visit Hōlei Sea Arch, drive Chain of Craters Road to its end, then follow the marked route about 1,000 feet (300 m) past the gate to the designated observation area on the right. Stay inside that area and well back from the cliffs and ocean: the final approach crosses rough, uneven lava, and the coast has unstable edges, strong winds, high waves and unpredictable surf. Check Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park’s current alerts and road status before setting out; access can change.
Where the viewpoint is and how long the visit takes
The National Park Service (NPS) places the designated viewing area about 1,000 feet (300 m) past the gate at the end of Chain of Craters Road, on the right. Follow the marked route and stay in the observation area; do not leave it to get closer to the arch or for a photograph. NPS estimates 20–30 minutes for the visit. What the approach is like
The walk starts on paved road, but the section immediately before the viewing area is rough, uneven lava rock. It is not a uniformly paved or smooth path, so visitors with mobility limitations or unsteady footing should account for that surface when deciding whether to go. The park recommends sturdy, close-toed shoes for rough volcanic terrain. Shoes, water and other supplies do not make unstable ground or cliff edges safe.
The arch is about 90 feet (27.4 m) high and was cut into a lava-flow cliff about 550 years ago, according to the NPS activity page. It is a temporary landform that will eventually crumble as the coast changes; its approximate age does not indicate when that will happen. The NPS place page notes that the designated viewing area has moved. Historic notices about an earlier overlook explain past changes, but current NPS directions, signs and closures take precedence. How to stay safe at the coast
Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park’s safety guidance warns: “In coastal areas, unpredictable waves and strong currents make the ocean particularly dangerous.” Cliffs can be unstable, and surf conditions can change. Keep well back from cliff edges and the water, stay within the designated observation area, and obey barriers, ropes, closure signs and ranger instructions. For coastal preparation, NPS recommends sturdy, closed-toe footwear and advises visitors to carry water, first-aid supplies and a flashlight, use sun protection on exposed lava fields, and check the weather. Can you swim at coastal sites in the park?
NPS says there are very few sheltered swimming sites and that rough seas, high surf and strong, unpredictable currents are typical. Its backcountry guidance is explicit: “Avoid entering the open ocean.” Hōlei Sea Arch is a viewpoint, not a swimming or tide-pool destination. NPS: Backcountry hiking

Hōlei Sea Arch is a short roadside visit; other coastal destinations can mean exposed backcountry travel on rough terrain. NPS route descriptions illustrate the difference:

These are not interchangeable outings. Remote coastal backcountry trips may require strenuous hiking and an overnight permit. NPS requires a backcountry permit and check-in/safety briefing for visitors exploring remote coastal backcountry or staying overnight; review the current permit page for procedures and fees before planning. Check current road, trail and weather conditions
The NPS activity page gives route directions, but it does not certify that the viewpoint is open now. Road, trail and other park conditions can change, so an older notice is not proof of present access. Before leaving and again while in the park, check official alerts and road or trail status, weather and air quality; at the site, follow posted signs and ranger instructions. A March 2026 NPS severe-weather release recorded temporary closures elsewhere, including a section of Chain of Craters Road at that time, and warned that further unannounced closures could occur.
