To view a Matplotlib plot on Android, save it as an image or document—usually PNG or PDF—and open that file on your phone. If you also need to run Python, use a browser-hosted notebook such as Google Colab or an Android notebook app. These are different jobs: opening a saved plot does not require Matplotlib on the phone, while generating or interacting with a plot requires a Python environment.
Choose the workflow that fits your task

Open an existing Matplotlib plot
In the Python script that creates the figure, save it to a file:
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
# ... create the plot ...
plt.savefig("plot.png", dpi=150, bbox_inches="tight")Matplotlib’s backend guide describes file output as distinct from interactive display. Its savefig API documentation explains that the filename extension normally determines the format; if the filename has no extension, PNG is the documented default. Supported formats depend on the backend.
- Run the script wherever your Python environment is available and save the figure as
plot.pngor another supported format. - Make the file accessible on your phone. If the script runs in Colab or another remote service, use that service’s download or export controls; the exact controls may change.
- Open the file from Android’s file manager and choose an image viewer if prompted.
PNG is a straightforward choice for an image. PDF is useful when the figure belongs in a document, and Matplotlib also documents SVG output. Saving a plot is separate from generating it: once the file is on the phone, you do not need Matplotlib running there just to view it.

Why plt.show() may not open a window
plt.show() is not a universal command for opening a desktop-style window. Matplotlib’s backend determines whether figures appear in an interactive user interface or are written to files. The backend documentation identifies Agg as a non-interactive backend: it can write files, but it cannot open a GUI window. If your environment uses Agg, save the figure with plt.savefig("plot.png") and open the resulting file instead.
Android Python environments are app-oriented rather than a conventional desktop installation with a universal Python console. The Python documentation for Android explains that Python is distributed in apps, with interpreters embedded for their own use, and lists tools such as Termux. This helps explain why a desktop GUI assumption may not hold, but it does not mean every Android environment lacks graphical options.

Run Matplotlib code without a desktop
Use a hosted browser notebook
Google Colab describes itself as a hosted Jupyter notebook service where you write and execute Python in a browser, and its welcome page includes Matplotlib examples. Colab says code runs on Google cloud servers, not as a local Android Python process. A phone browser can access a browser notebook, but the cited information does not establish current mobile usability, login requirements, or account-specific limits.
Use a Jupyter widget backend for notebook interactivity
If the goal is interactive pan and zoom tied to notebook code, run the notebook with a live kernel and a frontend that supports Matplotlib widgets. Matplotlib documents activation with %matplotlib ipympl or %matplotlib widget. Its backend guide lists JupyterLab and Notebook 7+ for this backend. A supported desktop frontend does not by itself guarantee that the same widget works in an Android browser.

Consider a local Android notebook app
The Callisto publisher says its Android app runs CPython 3.10 locally through Chaquopy, reads and writes Jupyter Notebook v4 files, includes Matplotlib in its free package set, and renders Matplotlib figures inline. It also describes an optional connection to a Jupyter server. These are publisher claims, not an independent compatibility test. App version, package set, pricing, and availability can change, so check the current listing, Android compatibility, package limits, and terms before choosing it.

What to use for interactive viewing
- Only need to inspect a finished figure: save and open a PNG or PDF. This is the simplest route and does not require a Python runtime on the phone.
- Need to execute or edit Python: use a hosted notebook if remote execution is acceptable, or a local Android notebook app if you specifically want a local runtime.
- Need plot controls connected to notebook code: use a live kernel, a compatible Jupyter frontend, and the
ipymplwidget backend; do not rely on a static image or assume an Android browser will support the widget.
