Run lshw for a hardware inventory

Open a terminal.
-
Run
sudo lshwand enter your password if prompted. The command prints a detailed hardware report. -
To get a compact device-tree view instead, run
sudo lshw -short.
The Debian lshw manual describes the utility as a tool for extracting detailed information about a machine’s hardware configuration. Its report can include memory configuration, firmware, mainboard, CPU, cache and bus details.

Focus on a device category
Use -class to narrow the report to one or more hardware classes. For example:

To find class names, consult the class values shown by lshw -short or lshw -businfo.

Choose an output format
Select the format that suits how you plan to read or process the report:

Available options vary by installed lshw version. Check lshw -help on your machine; the Debian source documentation for lshw is also useful for the version it covers.

Sanitize a report before sharing
Use -sanitize to remove some potentially sensitive fields, including IP addresses and serial numbers:
sudo lshw -sanitize -short
Sanitization is a filter, not a guarantee that every identifying detail is gone. Review the output yourself before posting or sending it.

Understand what lshw can and cannot detect
lshw draws on platform and device interfaces such as DMI on x86 and IA-64, OpenFirmware device trees on PowerPC, and interfaces for PCI/AGP, CPUID, IDE/ATA/ATAPI, PCMCIA, SCSI and USB. Support is not complete across all GNU/Linux architectures, and hardware detection has limits. Treat the report as an account of what lshw detected: a missing entry does not prove that the component is absent.
