To verify that satellite flight software responds within a bounded time, define the task, deadline, operating modes, input domain and exact hardware/software configuration covered by the claim. Then combine an analysis suited to that target with representative on-target timing tests, account for scheduling and interference, and show how the resulting evidence supports the deadline. A longest runtime observed in testing is evidence about the conditions exercised; by itself, it does not prove a worst-case execution-time (WCET) bound.

What does a bounded-execution-time claim mean?

A timing claim is meaningful only when it says what software must respond, within what time, and under which conditions. “Fast enough” is not a verifiable requirement. State the deadline or response-time limit and tie it to a specific function or task, execution mode, input range, target configuration and relevant scheduling or interrupt context.

For example, a useful claim identifies the software activity and the deadline it must meet, names the flight processor and build to which the claim applies, and describes the operating conditions included in the analysis. It also identifies exclusions. A result for one processor, binary or operating mode should not be assumed to apply to a different configuration.

Three terms should not be conflated:

  • Observed execution time: the time measured for an execution under stated test conditions. The largest observed value is the maximum seen in those tests, not automatically the worst case across all possible executions.
  • WCET estimate or bound: an analytical result, or a justified combination of analysis and evidence, intended to characterize an upper execution-time limit for a stated domain. Its strength depends on the method, model and assumptions.
  • Deadline satisfaction: whether the task, in the system’s scheduling and interference context, can complete in time. A task-level execution-time result is an input to this question, not its answer on its own.

Real-time software is about responding to inputs within bounded time frames, not simply running quickly on average. ESA uses that framing in its RTEMS explainer.

How to build a verification case

Work from the requirement toward evidence, keeping the claim, analysis and test configuration aligned. The result should make clear what has been established and what remains outside the argument.

  1. Define the timing requirement. Identify the task or function, deadline or response-time requirement, execution modes, input ranges, interrupt and scheduling context, and the target hardware and software configuration. Clarify ambiguous wording before selecting a measurement or analysis method.
  2. Describe the target and timing assumptions. Record processor and memory behavior, cache and pipeline configuration, compiler and build settings, operating system and scheduler behavior, task interactions, and relevant shared-resource interference. Identify which effects apply to this target and which are excluded; do not treat a result from a different build or processor as interchangeable evidence.
  3. Select complementary evidence. Use static analysis or another analytical method only where its supported language, compiler, binary and processor model fit the target. Measure on the target and design representative workload, stress or interference tests to characterize implementation behavior. State what each method can establish and why the combination is adequate for the claim.
  4. Refine the timing model as the software matures. Revisit the analysis as implementation and dynamic behavior become clearer. ESA’s older software engineering handbook describes refining schedulability analysis through development toward qualification review using measured WCET and implemented behavior; it is technical background, not current normative guidance. See the ECSS software engineering handbook alongside the current standard scope.
  5. Analyze schedulability at system level. Evaluate the scheduling policy, task periods and priorities, blocking, interrupts and applicable interference using a model appropriate to the system. Determine how task execution-time results interact with the actual deadline and operating context.
  6. Keep reproducible records. Retain the requirement, tool name and version/configuration, binary and build identity, analysis assumptions, test setup, workload or input strategy, traces or measurement data, stress and interference conditions, margins, anomalies, and project-required review and approval records.

Do not call a set of measurements a proof of WCET unless the project’s analysis justifies that conclusion. Likewise, an analytical result is only as relevant as its model and assumptions are to the deployed configuration.

Which methods provide useful timing evidence?

Static analysis and target measurement address related but different questions. Static analysis examines program behavior against a model; on-target measurement records behavior on the implementation under selected conditions. Neither label alone establishes that the deadline is met in every relevant mode.

Approach What it contributes What to examine
Static or other analytical WCET analysis An estimate or bound derived by analyzing software and a processor model, subject to the method’s supported inputs and assumptions. Whether the analysis covers the final binary or another representation; target processor, instruction set, compiler and language support; treatment of caches, pipelines and memory; path assumptions and infeasible paths; and the evidence needed to review the model.
On-target timing measurement Execution-time observations from the implementation on the target under recorded test conditions. Hardware trace can add information about execution behavior where the setup supports it. Input and workload coverage, operating modes, instrumentation effects, scheduling context, repeatability, stress conditions and interference. An observed maximum does not cover untested behavior by itself.
Schedulability analysis A system-level assessment of whether execution-time demands and other scheduling effects can meet deadlines under a specified model. Scheduling policy, task periods and priorities, blocking, interrupts, dependencies and shared-resource effects, along with the validity of the execution-time inputs.

ESA’s published material discusses both static WCET analysis and on-target timing analysis, and its links page describes AbsInt aiT as statically computing WCET bounds and Rapita RapiTime as providing on-target timing analysis and hardware trace capture. Those descriptions do not establish a current head-to-head comparison, endorsement, or approval for a particular mission. Check technical fit against the exact target and project configuration using the ESA schedulability analysis overview and ESA useful links as background, not as a substitute for project qualification.

Which hardware and software effects can change execution time?

Timing depends on the configuration. Assess the effects that apply to the flight target rather than assuming one universal processor model or test recipe.

Caches and pipelines

Cache behavior and processor pipelines can affect execution time, so the timing model and tests should account for the relevant configuration. ESA’s historical discussion notes that cache effects introduce execution-time non-determinism and that WCET estimation, scheduling policy and cache policy need to be analyzed together. It is useful technical context, not a current product recommendation: ESA’s schedulability analysis page.

Concurrency and shared-resource interference

On multicore or partitioned systems, another core or software partition can affect the timing being measured or analyzed. NASA’s handbook guidance calls for WCET testing under interference conditions on multicore platforms. It also cautions that WCET need not occur at maximum processor utilization or computational complexity, and notes that cache misses can increase runtime. Treat this as NASA-specific guidance, not a universal requirement for every satellite project: NASA’s multicore, concurrent and partitioned software guidance.

Scheduling, interrupts and system deadlines

Execution time is only part of a task’s response time. Priorities, periods, blocking, interrupt activity and other tasks can affect whether a deadline is met. ESA’s historical overview links hard real-time flight software with thorough schedulability analysis and scheduling policies: ESA’s software life-cycle overview.

How should timing-analysis tools or methods be selected?

Establish technical suitability before comparing cost or procurement terms. A tool’s general category or vendor description does not establish that it supports the mission’s processor, compiler, binary or assurance needs.

  • Does it analyze source, an intermediate representation or the final binary, and what kind of claim does its result support?
  • Does it support the exact target processor, instruction set, compiler, binary format and software language?
  • How does it represent cache, pipeline, memory and other relevant microarchitectural effects?
  • Can it reflect deployed scheduling, interrupts, multicore behavior and shared-resource interference?
  • What input and workload assumptions, path coverage limits or analysis restrictions apply, including the treatment of infeasible paths?
  • Can results be repeated, traced to the build and requirement, integrated into verification records and independently reviewed?

Assess licensing, training and vendor support after the technical fit is established. Current pricing or program terms should be confirmed directly; they are not established by the cited technical material.

How do standards fit into the assurance case?

The current ECSS listing cited here is ECSS-E-ST-40C Rev.1, dated 30 April 2025. Its public scope covers space-system product software engineering processes, including requirements definition, design, production, verification and validation, transfer, operations and maintenance. Applicability is subject to project tailoring. The public page also says the ECSS-E-HB-40A handbook remains valuable but has not been updated to align with this standard revision.

ECSS-E-ST-10-02C Rev.1, dated 1 February 2018, establishes verification requirements for space-system products. Its public summary says software verification is addressed by the ECSS software and software product assurance standards, that applicability should not be considered in isolation, and that project tailoring is allowed. The public summary does not set a universal WCET acceptance threshold.

For a compliance claim, check the controlled standard text, project tailoring, verification plan and customer-supplier requirements that govern the mission. NASA handbook guidance may help with relevant multicore questions, but it does not replace the project’s applicable standards and mission requirements.
