Check an XRP Ledger transaction by its hash, but treat it as final only when the transaction response says validated: true. A wallet’s immediate submission message—even tesSUCCESS—is provisional. If a transaction is still unvalidated, check again as new ledgers close; if its LastLedgerSequence has passed, confirm its absence using a server with continuous ledger history before concluding it expired.
How to verify an XRP Ledger transaction by hash
- Find the transaction hash. Look in the wallet’s transaction details, signing output, or saved submission record. For an application, XRPL recommends saving the hash,
LastLedgerSequence, sender address and sequence number, and the latest validated ledger index at submission. These details can help recover status after a network or power interruption. See the XRPL reliable transaction submission guide. - Query the XRPL
txmethod. Look up the transaction using its hash, either through the API or a client-library wrapper that returns the same record. - Check
validatedbefore reading the outcome. If it istrue, readmeta.TransactionResultand the ledger index. The response may also include the ledger close time. XRPL documents the transaction lookup response fields.
A validated tesSUCCESS means the transaction succeeded. Other validated result codes indicate other final outcomes; interpret them from the transaction metadata, not from an earlier submission message.
Why a submission response is not confirmation
A submit response describes a candidate transaction as seen by a server before the result is final. Even a provisional tesSUCCESS means only that the server received or locally applied the candidate to an in-progress ledger. The result can change before ledger validation. XRPL’s reliable submission documentation explains that transaction outcomes remain provisional until validation.

For a validated transaction, the result is final: as the documentation puts it, “Transaction results are no longer provisional, success or failure is now final and immutable.”

How long an XRP Ledger transaction usually takes
XRPL’s Send XRP tutorial says many transactions reach a final outcome in about 4–7 seconds because most are accepted into the next ledger. The tutorial also notes that network connectivity or ledger load can extend the wait. This is typical timing, not a guaranteed maximum for an individual transaction.
New ledger versions usually arrive about every 3–5 seconds, according to XRPL’s ledger documentation. Ledger cadence is not a promise that a particular transaction will validate in that interval.

What to do when a transaction is still pending
It has not reached its ledger limit
Wait for another validated ledger, then query the hash again. If the latest validated ledger index is still below the transaction’s LastLedgerSequence, a missing result is not conclusive: the transaction may still be included before that limit.

The ledger limit has passed, but the lookup is empty
First check whether the server you queried has continuous ledger history from the submission point through the transaction’s LastLedgerSequence. A server missing part of that history cannot establish that the transaction was not included. If a server with complete history confirms no inclusion through the limit, the transaction cannot be included later under that limit.
Then check the sender’s account sequence. If it advanced, another transaction may have used that sequence; XRPL’s guide recommends manual review in this situation. An empty lookup alone does not explain what happened to the transaction.

The wallet and explorer disagree
Compare the underlying status fields rather than relying on a generic label such as “pending.” Servers or applications may display information differently. Use these checks:
- Validation: Is the result provisional, or does the record say
validated: true? - Final result: What does
meta.TransactionResultreport? - Ledger placement: What ledger index contains the transaction? Is a close time available?
- Expiration bound: Has the latest validated ledger reached or passed
LastLedgerSequence? - History completeness: Does the server have continuous history across the relevant ledger range?
- Sequence context: If the transaction remains absent after its limit, has the sender’s account sequence advanced?
How to interpret XRPL transaction result codes
Use the named result code and, for a final outcome, the validated transaction metadata. An immediate engine_result is still provisional. XRPL’s transaction result reference describes these code families:

tec: The intended transaction effect did not occur, but the transaction cost was destroyed. Treat this as final only when it appears in a validated ledger.tef: The transaction cannot be applied to the server’s current or any later ledger, subject to circumstances such as prior application or ledger conditions described in the reference.tel: A local server condition, such as high load, caused the error. Another server or a later attempt may return a different response.tem: The transaction is malformed or otherwise cannot be applied by any server under current protocol rules.
Human-readable engine messages and numeric codes can change, so do not diagnose from message text alone.
When the transaction may not be the source of the delay
This process verifies what happened on the XRP Ledger; it does not establish whether a particular wallet or hosted endpoint is operating correctly, or diagnose an exchange’s internal processing delay. If the ledger transaction is validated but a service still shows a pending state, the service’s own processing is a separate issue from ledger confirmation.
