Disable JavaScript in Chrome DevTools, reload representative pages, and check that their essential content, links, and tasks still work. This shows what a browser can use without scripts; it does not show what Google renders, which must be checked separately with Google’s inspection tools.
What “renders correctly” should mean
A page can display something without JavaScript and still fail its purpose. Decide what users must be able to read or do before testing. For an informational page, that usually means readable core text and usable links. For a service, it includes the essential task flow or a clear explanation of why the task requires JavaScript.
Separate three questions: Is useful content present? Do essential interactions work? What does a particular search crawler render? A nonblank page answers only the first, and only partially.
Test pages with JavaScript disabled in Chrome
1. Pick representative pages
Choose the homepage, a typical content or product page, a page with navigation or forms, and any template built around client-side rendering. Include other templates if their markup or scripts differ. This is a practical sample, not a prescribed sample size.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Disable JavaScript and reload
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Open the DevTools command menu and run Disable JavaScript.
- Reload the page while the setting is active. Repeat for each selected URL.
- Record whether essential text, page structure, navigation links, and images appear. Note blank areas, loading indicators that never resolve, and visible errors.
Chrome’s Lighthouse fallback-content guidance recommends this DevTools feature for seeing how a site looks and performs with JavaScript disabled: Chrome Lighthouse fallback-content guidance.
3. Test the promised tasks
Try the actions users need: follow an ordinary link, reach the main content, submit a standard form, and use critical navigation. A menu animation may disappear without preventing access to its links; a form that cannot be submitted may block the task entirely. A standard HTML <form> can provide a working baseline without JavaScript, with client-side validation or submission behavior added as enhancement. See MDN’s first-form guide.

4. Distinguish baseline from enhancement
Some applications genuinely require JavaScript. In that case, avoid leaving users with an unexplained blank screen: provide a <noscript> notice that clearly states what is needed. Chrome notes that a blank screen leaves users unsure whether the page, browser, or computer is broken.
A Lighthouse nonblank-content check is deliberately basic: it checks whether page HTML is empty when JavaScript is disabled. Passing it does not establish that content is understandable, links work, or a workflow can be completed. Chrome also notes that the strictness of progressive-enhancement expectations is debated; assess the baseline against the purpose of your own page. The Lighthouse guidance notes that PWA testing in Lighthouse is deprecated, so do not treat a historical PWA fallback audit as a general quality verdict: Chrome Lighthouse fallback-content guidance.

Check Google’s rendered page separately
Disabling JavaScript answers what the page offers without scripts. Google Search can execute JavaScript in a later rendering stage, so a no-JavaScript browser test is not a substitute for inspecting Google’s rendered result. Use Rich Results Test or Search Console’s URL Inspection to inspect Google’s rendered DOM, loaded resources, JavaScript console output, and exceptions. After a fix, run the relevant inspection again and review the result. See Google’s JavaScript SEO basics.
Google queues eligible pages for rendering and runs JavaScript in a headless Chromium rendering stage. Rendering may not happen immediately, and not every bot can run JavaScript. Server-rendered or prerendered HTML can make important content available to a wider range of crawlers. Google’s renderer may also omit resources it considers unnecessary for essential content, and some browser features may not be supported or available; use feature detection and provide suitable fallback behavior where needed. These details are covered in Google’s JavaScript SEO basics and Google’s guidance on fixing JavaScript search issues.

Troubleshoot missing content or inconsistent results
The page is blank with JavaScript off
Check whether the server response contains meaningful HTML or only an application shell that relies on JavaScript to generate content. Google distinguishes classical or server-rendered pages, whose HTTP response contains content, from app-shell pages that need JavaScript execution: Google’s JavaScript SEO basics. If JavaScript is required for the application, show a clear <noscript> explanation rather than an empty page.
Google’s rendered DOM is missing content
Use URL Inspection or Rich Results Test to check loaded resources and JavaScript exceptions. Investigate blocked or failing resources and unsupported assumptions about browser features; Google’s rendering environment may not load every resource or support every feature. Add feature detection and fallback behavior where appropriate: Google’s guidance on fixing JavaScript search issues.

The failure is intermittent or environment-specific
Do not assume every failure is a code defect. Network problems, browser extensions, supplier outages, DNS failures, browser updates or bugs, third-party scripts, firewalls, and antivirus software can interfere with CSS or JavaScript. GOV.UK describes these as possible causes of service problems: GOV.UK guidance on progressive enhancement.
For important workflows, test across relevant browsers and devices, and include assistive technologies. GOV.UK recommends this for components that rely heavily on JavaScript; MDN also recommends compatibility testing across browsers and operating systems: GOV.UK guidance on progressive enhancement and MDN’s first-form guide.

For a screenshot of a URL, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from ScreenshotNeo. It can capture a page, but a screenshot alone does not verify that links or workflows function without JavaScript. Use the DevTools workflow above for that test.
One GET request returns a screenshot or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.
