Before opening an account, verify both the broker’s identity and its current regulatory status: match the firm and the exact office or branch against Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) records, then confirm its current securities-broker licence with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). After those checks, compare written fees and services, review the account terms, and understand how your securities will be held through CDC.

1. Get the broker’s exact details

Ask the firm for its full legal name, SECP securities-broker licence number, PSX TREC number, official website and helpline, and the full address of the office or branch you plan to use. PSX’s Investor Awareness Guide recommends obtaining and checking broker registration details. Use the legal entity name—not just a trading app, brand name, salesperson’s name, or logo—as the basis for verification.

2. Match the firm and branch in PSX records

Start at PSX’s Select Your Stock-Broker page, which links to TREC-holder and registered-office or branch information. Match the legal name and TREC details, then check that the particular location you intend to visit or use is listed for that firm.

PSX’s Investor Awareness Guide says that verifying a broker’s registration is a prudent first step to ensure investors trade through a duly registered person and at a registered office or branch. Its guide warns that dealing with an unregistered person or an unlisted location can leave investors with limited or no recourse if money or securities are misappropriated or the party goes out of business. PSX also described checking a firm’s TREC status, office, and branches in its 21 August 2024 article, Know Your Rights As An Investor.

PSX directory information can change. Check the official listing near the time you apply; do not rely on an old screenshot, cached result, or third-party list.

3. Confirm the SECP broker licence

PSX TREC information and SECP licensing are related but distinct checks. A TREC-holder listing by itself does not establish that the firm’s broker licence is current. SECP identifies securities brokerage as a regulated activity and explains that a TREC holder applies for a securities-broker licence through PSX. SECP says a broker licence is valid for one year, so confirm the current status rather than assuming a past approval remains in force. Use SECP’s official Brokers & Agents – Licensing information and match the licensed entity’s name to the PSX entry.

If the name, licence number, TREC details, address, website, or contact information does not match, pause. Contact the firm through details shown in official PSX information and resolve the discrepancy before sending identity documents or money. A convincing website or a salesperson’s assurance is not a substitute for matching official records.

4. Compare firms only after the regulatory checks

Once a firm and its branch match the official records, compare whether it suits your needs. PSX’s broker-selection guidance points investors toward service and practical considerations such as communications, research, online trading, trade confirmations, charges, and branch proximity.

What to compare What to ask or check
Trading and support Is online trading available? How can you reach customer support, and how are orders and trade confirmations communicated?
Research and communication What research material is available, and how does the firm communicate information relevant to your account and objectives?
Total charges Request the written commission and transaction-fee schedule. Ask which other charges apply, including applicable CDC charges, and check for any additional fees before signing.
Access and account service Is the registered branch practical for you to use? What account statements, help facilities, and contact channels are available?

Compare the same kinds of service and charges across firms. Do not assume a low quoted commission represents the full cost; ask for the complete schedule in writing.

5. Review account documents and securities custody

Open the brokerage account in your own name and read the account-opening form and terms before signing. Compare the broker’s documents with the standard form and checklist in PSX’s Account Opening Checklist. Keep copies of signed documents and confirmations, and obtain your client or account number and Unique Identification Number (UIN).

Understand which CDC arrangement will hold your securities. A CDC sub-account is maintained through the broker; a CDC Investor Account gives the investor greater individual custody and control over securities, according to PSX’s account-opening guidance. Ask the broker to explain the arrangement, how you will receive statements, and how you can check your holdings before choosing.

PSX advises customers to operate their accounts personally where possible. If you authorise someone else, provide written authorisation to the broker and retain a copy; you remain responsible for transactions made on that person’s instructions. Do not make a cash deposit.

What verification can—and cannot—tell you

These checks help establish that you are dealing with the legal firm and location shown in official records and that the firm has a current broker licence. They do not guarantee that the broker is financially risk-free, that every service will suit you, or that an investment will make money. Continue to keep your signed records, account information, and trade confirmations.
