Then check important launch claims against dated primary evidence and inspect the transaction your wallet asks you to sign. A name, ticker, logo, explorer listing or verification badge is not proof that a token is safe or that its promises are true.
Start with the network and full token address
A token’s identity is its address on a particular blockchain—not its name or ticker. Anyone can create a token using a familiar name, symbol or logo. Ethereum.org recommends checking the contract address published by the organization: Ethereum.org’s guide to identifying scam tokens.
- Identify the network. Confirm which blockchain the token is supposed to use. The same-looking name on another network may refer to a different asset.
- Reach the project’s official source independently. Type a known domain or use a saved bookmark rather than following an unsolicited message, launch post or search advertisement.
- Find the contract or mint address on that source. Copy the complete address; do not rely on a ticker search.
- Compare the entire address character by character. Check it against the chain-specific explorer and the address shown in the swap interface and wallet transaction details. A shortened or truncated address is not enough to confirm a match.
On Solana, the token identifier is its mint address. Use Solana’s documentation to understand which provider supplies a displayed verification status: Solana token verification documentation.
Understand what explorer listings and badges establish
Explorer information can help identify a canonical token and spot possible impersonators, but a badge is not a safety audit or investment endorsement. Solana Explorer aggregates independent verification providers rather than applying one universal process. Solana explicitly says verification does not guarantee a token’s value, safety or legitimacy. Check which provider is behind a status and what that provider actually verifies.

Ethereum.org also cautions that Etherscan is not an authoritative source of project legitimacy. Scam labels can be useful warnings, but a missing label is not proof of safety. In either case, use explorer metadata as a cross-check and rely on a matching full address from an independently reached official project source to establish identity.
Check launch claims against dated primary evidence
Write down the specific claims that matter to your decision, then look for evidence from the project or the other party named in the claim. A project’s assertion is not independent confirmation of its own partnership or listing.

- Product and utility: Is the product available now, or is the token’s usefulness only promised for the future? What access or rights does holding the token actually provide?
- Supply and control: What do official documents say about supply, unlocks, governance, upgrades and who can change the contract or token rules?
- Team and counterparties: Check whether a named team member, investor, exchange or partner confirms the relationship through its own official channel. A logo in a launch post is not confirmation.
- Timing: Prefer dated documentation or announcements, and check whether they still describe the current situation.
The CFTC advises buyers to understand the rights attached to a coin or token and warns that factors such as liquidity, demand, competing technologies, future uses and theft risk can affect value: CFTC guidance on understanding digital-asset risks. A promised future use is not the same as a live product or an enforceable right.
Recognize pressure tactics and stop when something is unclear
Guaranteed or unusually high returns, claims of “no risk,” artificial deadlines and pressure to buy before you can investigate are reasons to pause. They are warning signs, not by themselves proof that a particular token is fraudulent. The CFTC describes social-media promotion and fear-of-missing-out tactics in its digital-asset fraud guidance. An SEC/CFTC staff investor alert also warns about high guaranteed returns presented as involving little or no risk. Treat promotional return figures as claims to scrutinize, not as expected returns or evidence of safety.

Never disclose a seed phrase or private key to someone claiming to represent a project. Do not send extra funds to unlock supposed profits or recover a deposit. Chainalysis lists requests for keys, urgency and suspicious transaction approvals among warning signs: Chainalysis guidance on cryptocurrency scams.
Inspect liquidity and the transaction before swapping
Review the contract or mint information, creation and transaction history, and any available supply or holder data. Treat those details as clues, not a certification. Ethereum.org describes tiny or absent liquidity pools as common scam-token signals. But visible liquidity does not prove token identity, fair trading or that you can sell at the displayed price. Liquidity can change or be concentrated, and a trade may face substantial price impact.

Before approving a swap, check the network and full token address again in the wallet confirmation. Read the destination, amount and requested permissions. Some approvals allow a contract to spend tokens; do not sign an unfamiliar request unless you can explain what it authorizes. If the wallet’s request differs from the trade you intended, cancel it and investigate.

These checks organize evidence; they do not produce a reliable price forecast or make one token safe simply because it compares favorably with another.
What this checklist can—and cannot—tell you
A token’s name, “utility” label or marketing description does not by itself determine its legal status. In the United States, securities-law treatment depends on the facts and applicable legal standards. The SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s September 25, 2026 FAQ describes staff views, not a rule or regulation, and says the views have no legal force or effect. Its discussion includes how explicit promotional representations about managerial efforts can matter under the agency’s interpretive framework: SEC Division of Corporation Finance crypto-asset securities FAQ. This is general U.S. context, not a definitive classification of a particular token or personalized legal advice.
Address checks and claim verification can help you avoid preventable mistakes, but they cannot prove a new token is safe, predict its price or guarantee that you can sell it. If the address conflicts, a material claim cannot be independently confirmed or the wallet asks for permissions you do not understand, do not rush into the purchase.
