If an unexpected caller says your bank account is at risk, do not give them a verification code, password, account details, remote access, or money. Caller ID and personal details do not prove who is calling. End the call, then contact the organization yourself using its official app or website, or a phone number on a recent statement or the back of your card.
Use this safe verification process
- Ask who is calling and what the issue is. You can say: “Which organization are you calling from, and what is the issue? I’m going to end this call and contact the organization using the number on my statement or in its official app.”
- Hang up. Do not stay on the inbound call while looking up a number, opening a link, or following instructions the caller supplied.
- Start a new contact through a trusted route. Open the institution’s official app or website yourself, or use a number printed on a recent statement or the back of your card. Do not call a number the caller gives you or assume a top search result is safe: scammers can buy search ads that appear prominent. The FTC explains this risk in its guidance on unexpected calls claiming your money is at risk.
- Ask the institution whether the claim is real. Describe what the caller said and ask whether action is needed. If there is a genuine issue, the institution can tell you what to do through the channel you initiated.
Why caller ID and convincing details are not enough
A displayed name or phone number can be spoofed, and impostors may know real personal or account details. Those details could have been bought, stolen, or obtained elsewhere; they do not authenticate the caller. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau advises consumers to verify suspicious requests independently in its overview of common fraud and scams.
Use the same standard even if the caller sounds professional, knows your name, or claims to be from a fraud department. The decisive difference is who initiated contact and where your callback details came from: you should initiate contact using a number or app you already trust, not a route supplied during an unexpected call.
Never share codes or let a caller access your device
Keep verification codes, passwords, and sensitive account information private. A verification code can help someone authenticate as you; reading it aloud may give an impostor access to your account. The FTC states: “No caller — especially someone from your bank or investment company’s fraud department — will ever ask for the verification code.” See the FTC’s June 2024 warning about bank-fraud calls and its explanation of what verification codes are and why scammers ask for them.

Do not let an unexpected caller take remote control of your computer or phone. Do not install software, open a link, or change account settings at the caller’s direction. If the organization needs you to take a security step, confirm that directly with it first.
Recognize pressure tactics and money-transfer requests
- Urgency or fear: Claims of suspicious activity, a hacked account, arrest, or a deadline are designed to rush you. Stop and verify independently rather than acting under pressure.
- Move or withdraw money to “protect” it: Treat this as a scam pattern. Do not transfer money to another account, withdraw cash, or follow payment instructions from the unexpected caller. The FTC’s unexpected-call guidance explains how to handle claims that your money is at risk.
- Keep the call secret: A demand not to tell family or friends is another warning sign. The FTC advises involving a trusted person; a legitimate fraud inquiry should not require secrecy.
- Prove your identity by giving information: A request for a code, password, or sensitive account information is not a safe way to verify the caller. End the call and ask the institution through your own channel.
If you already shared information or sent money
Contact your bank, credit union, broker, or investment firm immediately through its official app or website, or a trusted number on a statement or card. Explain exactly what happened: whether you shared a code, password, or account number; granted remote access; or sent money. Follow the institution’s instructions to secure the account and respond to any transfer. What can be reversed or secured depends on the payment method, timing, and institution, so do not assume funds will be recovered.

Report suspected fraud to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC reported that people said they lost nearly $3 billion to impersonators in 2024; that figure covers reported losses to impersonators, not phone scams alone or all unreported losses. Details are in the FTC’s April 2025 impersonation-scam alert.

This is consumer guidance based on U.S. federal sources, not a description of one bank’s procedures or universal legal advice. Institutions may handle legitimate fraud alerts differently, but you can still verify an unexpected claim by ending the call and contacting the organization through a channel you independently trust.
