Use YouTube Studio’s Live traffic-source report to find how people discover your 24/7 stream, then test one relevant change at a time and judge it by viewing quality as well as traffic volume. The report can reveal search terms, suggested-video contexts, playlists, and external referrals; it describes what has happened, not what YouTube will recommend next.
Open the report for your live stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Analytics, then select Content.
- Select the Live chip.
- Find the report labeled How viewers find your live streams. Depending on your channel and Studio’s interface rollout, the layout or available detail may differ.
- Choose a date range that gives you enough data to interpret, and record it before comparing results. YouTube says some Analytics data may be limited, and it began gradually rolling out an updated Studio experience in July 2026. YouTube Analytics guidance describes the product and its availability caveats.
The report may show an overall view of popular sources inside and outside YouTube as well as individual categories. For live-stream-specific guidance, see YouTube’s Content tab analytics tips for Live.
What each traffic source tells you

Definitions follow YouTube’s video reach glossary. Categories and detail available for your channel depend on the report; do not assume every source will appear.
Turn the source report into specific experiments
Use Search terms to shape topic and packaging ideas
Look at the terms people actually used, then group them by intent—for example, a particular subject or use case only when those themes are present in your own data. YouTube says to “Find ideas for new content in the search terms viewers are using to find you.” Use that language to consider whether a stream title, description, or companion video clearly matches the topic viewers seek. This is a hypothesis to test, not proof that adding a term will improve ranking. YouTube also notes that Search traffic could indicate how effective a title and description are; it does not promise a ranking result. See YouTube’s Content tab tips.

Investigate Suggested-video contexts
Review the specific videos associated with Suggested videos, where Studio provides them. Look for a real connection in topic, audience, or viewing purpose. If one exists, test complementary programming, a relevant playlist, or a suitable collaboration or link. Avoid copying unrelated videos or treating one appearance as a dependable recommendation source: YouTube describes recommendations as personalized and influenced by viewer-specific history and the video currently being watched. The report identifies contexts that sent viewers; it cannot promise future placement. Read YouTube’s explanation of how recommendations work.
Follow up on external referrals
Check which websites or apps are sending traffic. When a source is relevant, consider making the stream easier to share or embedding or linking it on an appropriate community or owned page. Then check whether the referral produced meaningful viewing, not merely visits. Impressions are thumbnail displays on YouTube; external sites and apps are excluded from YouTube impressions, so an external referral should not be judged by YouTube impression click-through rate alone.

Make playlists and channel navigation useful
If a playlist appears as a source, check whether it contains related programming and whether viewers can find the ongoing stream from it. Playlists may belong to you or another creator; inclusion is not guaranteed and should not be presented as something you can buy. Relevant channel navigation and playlists can make related content easier for interested viewers to find.
Measure whether a change helped
Source totals alone do not tell you whether discovery is useful. For each experiment, compare source views with the metrics available for the stream:

- Impressions and click-through rate: useful for YouTube surfaces that count thumbnail impressions; they do not cover external sites and apps.
- Average view duration and watch time: indicate whether viewers stayed and how much viewing the source contributed.
- Average and peak concurrent viewers: help show how the live audience changed over the period.
Compare equivalent date ranges and similar live programming. A brief spike can reflect a temporary referral or event, not a lasting pattern. Change one interpretable thing at a time, keep a short log of what changed and when, and revisit the report after enough data accumulates. There is no established target percentage for Search, Suggested, or external traffic that guarantees growth.
Analytics is based on Video ID, and processed or despammed data can differ from Live Control Room figures. Use one reporting surface consistently when comparing periods. YouTube’s live metrics guidance explains these distinctions: See your live stream’s metrics. YouTube also changed its view-counting method beginning August 24, 2026: views count when a video starts to play across Shorts, long-form VOD, and live streams. That is a measurement-method update, not evidence of audience growth. See YouTube’s content performance guidance.

Use audience timing as context, not a growth promise
The Audience report’s When your viewers are on YouTube reflects viewer activity across YouTube during the last 28 days and can help plan a live stream. For a continuous stream, use it to schedule a promoted moment or a programming change; it does not show that choosing a particular start time will improve discovery for an always-on stream. If your stream is horizontal and vertical
For a dual-format stream, Live Control Room metrics may combine horizontal and vertical viewing. YouTube says vertical-only metrics can be selected after 24 hours in Advanced Mode using Playback location and an appropriate date range. Apply the same format and reporting surface when comparing results. See YouTube’s live stream metrics guidance.
