You configure YouTube membership badges and custom emoji in YouTube Studio’s Memberships area. Once enabled, badges identify members beside their names in your channel’s comments and live chat, while uploaded emoji let members add your channel’s custom artwork to comments and live chats. YouTube documents these as regular membership features; it does not specify a separate setup or guarantee for a 24/7 stream.
What badges and custom emoji do in live chat
Membership badges identify members
A badge appears beside a member’s channel name in comments and live chats on the channel they joined. YouTube supports default badges, creator-uploaded custom badges, or a mixture. Badge stages correspond to active paid membership tenure: new, 1 month, 2 months, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, and 5 years. See YouTube Help’s membership benefits guidance.
Custom emoji give members channel-specific chat art
Creators must upload custom emoji; none are available by default. Members can use uploaded emoji in comments on the channel’s videos and in its live chats. You assign each emoji a family name, which members can type to autocomplete the emoji in live chat. YouTube says all members can use uploaded emoji regardless of membership level. These benefits belong to the channel: a membership on one channel does not unlock another channel’s badge or emoji.

YouTube’s guidance describes badges and emoji as ordinary channel-membership features, not as settings unique to continuous streams. It does not establish special behavior or guaranteed availability for a stream running 24/7. Live chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players, according to YouTube’s live-stream guidance.

Set up badges and emoji in YouTube Studio
These steps apply if channel memberships are enabled for your channel. YouTube’s navigation and eligibility requirements can change, so consult the current Memberships area and Help pages if a label differs.
- Open YouTube Studio. Sign in to the channel that will host the stream, then open the channel’s Memberships area in Studio.
- Choose your badge approach. In the Loyalty badges controls, keep YouTube’s default badges, upload custom badge artwork, or use a mixture. Assign artwork to the available tenure stages so members can see their membership history represented.
- Upload custom emoji. In Memberships, add each emoji image and give it a family name. The family name is what members use to find or autocomplete the emoji in live chat.
- Review membership levels separately. Badges and emoji are distinct from the other perks and levels you offer. YouTube allows up to six membership levels, with one to five perks per level; higher levels inherit perks from lower levels. Decide which other benefits to include without assuming every channel or tier offers members-only chat.
- Check the result in a live chat. Open the stream’s YouTube watch page and have an eligible member check that their badge appears beside their name and that the custom emoji are available. Do not use an embedded player to verify live chat, because chat is not available there.
Prepare badge and emoji artwork to YouTube’s specifications

These are the specifications listed in YouTube Help; the page does not display a publication year. Because badges and emoji appear small, make important shapes and expressions recognizable at the rendered size and preview the uploaded art rather than relying on a large source image.

Plan your emoji slots
YouTube’s slot table starts at four emoji for channels with zero members and reaches 54 slots at 5,000 or more members, with intermediate member thresholds listed on the official page. Treat the available count as a platform limit, not a target: prioritize a compact set members can recognize and remember.
Choose a setup members can understand and you can maintain
- Default, custom, or mixed badges: Default badges require the least artwork upkeep. Custom art can fit your channel identity, but it must remain legible at chat size. A mixture lets you customize selected stages while retaining defaults for others.
- One level or several: You can offer up to six levels, but higher levels inherit lower-level perks. Keep the badge and emoji setup distinct from decisions about other benefits, and explain clearly which membership perks apply.
- Emoji selection: Make family names easy to type and associate with the art. Consider how each image reads at 24 × 24 points as well as on high-density displays; YouTube’s slot count depends on member totals.

Eligibility, availability, and chat limits
Memberships are not available to every creator or viewer in every location. Creators should check channel eligibility, location availability, and the YouTube channel-membership policies and availability; viewers also need to be in a supported location to purchase a membership. Benefits vary by channel and tier, so do not promise that every channel offers custom artwork or members-only chat.
YouTube’s general live-chat guidance says viewers may send up to 11 messages every 30 seconds, and each message may contain up to 200 characters. Those are general chat rules, not separate restrictions on badges or custom emoji.

Troubleshoot missing badges or emoji
- A badge or emoji option is absent in Studio: Confirm that memberships are enabled and available for your channel, then check the current Memberships controls and eligibility guidance.
- A member cannot see a badge: Check that the person is a member of this specific channel and that the badge is assigned in the Loyalty badges controls. Badges are channel-specific.
- Custom emoji do not appear in chat: Confirm that the emoji were uploaded in Memberships and that the member is chatting on the channel’s YouTube watch page. Embedded players do not provide live chat.
- The emoji is difficult to recognize: Preview it at chat display size and simplify artwork that loses detail when reduced. YouTube’s listed render sizes are small.
- A GIF does not animate: This is expected; YouTube displays GIF emoji as static images.
- A member expects an emoji from another tier: YouTube says all members can use uploaded emoji regardless of level. Review the channel’s stated perks so membership levels are not confused with emoji access.
