To see which parts of a YouTube livestream held viewers’ attention, open the ended stream in YouTube Studio under Content → Live, choose Analytics → Engagement, and look for key moments for audience retention. Read that report alongside average view duration and concurrent viewers: retention shows how attention changes across the video, while concurrent viewers show how many people watched at the same time.
Find audience retention for an ended livestream
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content, then Live.
- Select the ended stream you want to review and open Analytics.
- Under Engagement, find key moments for audience retention. If the report is available, use its curve to locate sections where attention declined or remained stronger.
- Review average view duration and concurrent-viewer metrics alongside the curve. YouTube says live-stream analytics appear within minutes after a stream ends, though the report may not be present for every unusually long stream, archive, or channel configuration. Confirm it for each session you analyze. YouTube’s guide to live-stream metrics explains the available measures.
A drop in the retention curve identifies a point where fewer viewers remained, but it does not prove why they left. Check what was happening in the stream at that time and compare the pattern with other metrics before drawing conclusions.
Know what each metric can—and cannot—tell you

Use the retention curve for moment-by-moment attention. A high concurrent-viewer peak is a measure of simultaneous audience size, not evidence that viewers stayed for a particular part.
Compare sessions without mixing unlike formats
For a useful comparison, choose sessions with a similar format, purpose, and length. YouTube notes that audience behavior differs by format. Its live-performance guidance separates appeal, such as click-through rate; engagement, including views; and satisfaction, including average view duration. Treat these as related but distinct questions rather than collapsing them into a single “good stream” score. See YouTube’s live content analytics tips.

- Reach: Check views and traffic sources to understand how viewers arrived.
- Viewing quality: Use average view duration and the retention curve to assess viewing time and attention across moments.
- Simultaneous scale: Use average and peak concurrent viewers to compare the audience watching at the same time.
You can filter YouTube Analytics by Live, On demand, or Live & on demand. Depending on the report, it can also show watch time, audience retention, demographics, playback locations, traffic sources, and devices. Live-stream data can be downloaded as a CSV. Analytics is based on Video ID and its figures are processed and despammed, so they may differ from real-time measurements in Live Control Room. Plan archives for a continuous broadcast
A 24/7 broadcast is not necessarily a 24/7 replay you can analyze afterward. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours and warns, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If you need to review retention later, end and restart the broadcast in shorter sessions, check that each session has an archive and Analytics report, and keep a local recording backup. Do not assume that shorter sessions guarantee a retention report: YouTube’s guidance does not promise a usable curve for every stream or channel. If the report is missing, total watch time, average view duration, and concurrent-viewer peaks cannot substitute for segment-level retention.

Account for interface and view-count changes
YouTube began gradually rolling out an updated Studio Analytics experience in July 2026, so labels or layouts may differ between channels. If your Studio interface looks different, look within the selected video’s Analytics for engagement and audience-retention reporting. As of August 24, 2026, YouTube counts a view when a video starts playing across formats. Treat that date as a boundary when comparing view-count trends over time, and do not treat raw views as equivalent to watch duration. YouTube says partner-program earnings and eligibility continue to use separate engaged or qualified criteria. Details: Understand your YouTube content performance.
