You can use your existing PlayStation account on a new PS5 without the old console. Sign in to the new console with that account instead of creating a replacement. The account gives you your PlayStation identity, profile, trophies, friends, and access to your purchased library. It does not copy local game saves, screenshots, settings, or installed data to the new console. Those depend on whether a copy exists elsewhere or whether the old console is still available to transfer from.
What moves with the account and what does not
Sony’s PS5 quick-start guide for PS4 users says the existing account keeps your game history, trophies, profile, and friends, so you should use the same account on the new console rather than set up a new one (Sony PS5 Quick Start Guide for PS4 users (PDF)).
- Carried by the account: PlayStation identity, profile, trophies, friends, game history, and access to eligible purchased games.
- Not carried by sign-in alone: local saved data, screenshots and video clips stored on the old console, console settings, and installed data.
Keeping these two groups separate prevents most of the confusion people have after replacing a console.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Step 1: Sign in to the existing account on the new PS5
- Start the new PS5 and complete the initial setup.
- When prompted to sign in, choose the sign-in option and enter the existing PlayStation account credentials.
- Confirm that your profile, trophies, and friends appear. If you see an empty profile, you are probably signed in with a different account.
Sony’s setup guidance also notes that a configured PlayStation App can be used to sign in (Sony: Getting started with your new PS5 console).

Step 2: Recover the account if sign-in fails
If the account’s sign-in email is still accessible to you, use Sony’s recovery flow. Sony’s Account & Security guidance describes it (Sony: Account & Security).
- Open Account Management and choose Trouble Signing in? > Recover Your Account.
- Enter your sign-in ID, which is the account email address.
- Open the secure verification link Sony sends to that email, then set a new password.
Sony’s sign-in troubleshooting page also recommends checking that the sign-in ID is correct, keeping system software current, and trying account recovery before contacting support (Sony: Troubleshoot sign-in issues on PlayStation). If the account stays inaccessible, contact PlayStation Support.

Use only Sony’s official channels. Unofficial account-recovery services are a common source of scams, and you should never share a password or verification code with anyone else.
Step 3: Check whether a copy of your saved data already exists
Signing in will not bring old saves onto the new console. Check the following places for a copy. Each route only helps if the copy was made before the old console became unavailable.

PS Plus cloud storage
If the save was uploaded to cloud storage, you can download it on the new console. Sony’s transfer page identifies cloud storage as a way to access saved data for PlayStation Plus members (Sony: Transfer data from a PS4 console or PS5 console to your PS5 console). Do not assume a save is available here. Confirm it was uploaded and that you are signed in with the account that owns it.
PS4 saves copied to USB
Sony says PS4 game saves can be copied from the source console to a USB drive and then copied to the destination PS5. This works only if you made that copy before the old PS4 stopped being available.

PS4 extended storage drive
If you used a USB drive as PS4 extended storage, connect that drive to the PS5 to access the game data stored on it (Sony transfer guidance; Sony PS5 Quick Start Guide for PS4 users (PDF)). Treat this as a way to reach game data already on the drive. It is not a backup of every save or of your account settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePS5 saves that existed only on the old console
Sony states that PS5 saved data cannot be copied from a PS5 console to a USB drive. Sony’s current transfer guidance does not describe a way to retrieve a PS5 save that existed only on an unavailable console and was never uploaded to cloud storage. If that save matters to you, it cannot be recovered through the official methods covered here.

Step 4: Use direct console-to-console transfer if the old console still works
Sony’s transfer procedure can copy user and account information, saved data, screenshots and video clips, games, and console settings from a PS4 or PS5 to a PS5. What transfers depends on the source console generation and whether you are in initial setup or a later transfer, so check Sony’s transfer page for your exact case (Sony: Transfer data from a PS4 console or PS5 console to your PS5 console).
Before you start, confirm that:
- The source console is powered on and available.
- Both consoles are signed in to the same account.
- Both consoles have current system software.
- Trophies are synchronized.
- Both consoles are on a shared network.
Sony recommends using the same network and recommends a commercially available LAN cable for a faster, more stable wired connection than wireless. Do not power off either console or change network settings during the transfer. Sony warns that data may be damaged or lost if you do.
Choosing the right route
| Route | Needs old console now? | What it can help with | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sign in to the existing account | No | Identity, profile, trophies, friends, and access to eligible purchased games | Does not copy local saves, screenshots, settings, or installed data |
| Sony console-to-console transfer | Yes | User and account data, saves, screenshots and clips, games, and settings, depending on source and setup stage | Source console must be on and available; eligible items vary by source generation and stage |
| PS Plus cloud storage | No, if already uploaded | Saved data stored in the account’s cloud storage | Cannot recover a save that was never uploaded |
| PS4 USB save copy | No, if the copy already exists | PS4 game saved data | Requires a copy made in advance; PS5 saves cannot be copied to USB |
| Existing PS4 extended storage drive | No, if the drive is available | Access to game data already on the drive | Does not show that local saves or all user data are backed up |
In practice, sign in first, then check cloud storage and any USB copies. Use direct transfer only if the old console is still working and you can keep it powered on and connected during the process.
