You can use an iPhone as a webcam for a Mac with Continuity Camera, a linked Android phone as a camera for Windows 11, or a Pixel phone as a wired webcam on a device that supports USB Video Class (UVC). The right setup depends on your phone and computer; a phone can improve your picture, but the result depends on the camera, lighting, connection, and app.
Choose the setup that matches your phone and computer
| Phone and device | Built-in option | Connection |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone and Mac | Apple Continuity Camera | Wireless or USB |
| Android phone and Windows 11 or later | Microsoft connected camera, using Link to Windows | Linked-device setup |
| Pixel phone and a UVC-compatible device | Pixel USB webcam mode | USB cable that supports data |
These are platform-specific built-in routes, not one universal feature shared by every phone. Apple, Microsoft, and Google document the setup for their respective devices: Apple Continuity Camera, Microsoft connected camera, and Google Pixel webcam mode.
Use an iPhone as a webcam for a Mac
Check requirements and turn on Continuity Camera
Apple supports Continuity Camera wirelessly or over USB. For wireless use, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be on for both devices, they must use the same Apple Account, and the iPhone must be within 30 feet (10 meters) of the Mac. A VPN configuration that blocks local networking may interfere with Continuity features.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity and enable Continuity Camera.
- Place the iPhone in landscape orientation in a stable mount or stand, with its rear camera facing you.
- Open a camera-enabled app on the Mac and choose the iPhone from the app’s camera options. The exact menu location depends on the app.
For a wired connection, connect the iPhone to the Mac. If prompted, trust the computer or allow the accessory. Apple recommends USB if the iPhone needs to charge while in use. App support varies: many third-party apps that access the camera or microphone can use Continuity Camera, but do not assume every camera app offers it.

If the iPhone does not appear
- Check that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on, both devices use the same Apple Account, and they are within range.
- Confirm Continuity Camera is enabled and the iPhone is stable, in landscape orientation, and positioned with its rear camera facing you.
- Check whether another Continuity feature is in use, and whether a VPN is blocking local networking.
- Try USB, then select the iPhone in the Mac app’s camera settings.
Use an Android phone as a webcam on Windows
Confirm Microsoft’s requirements
Microsoft lists these minimums for its connected-camera route: a PC running Windows 11 or later, an Android phone running Android 10 or later, and Link to Windows app version 1.24022.0 or later. This is Microsoft’s linked-Android setup; it does not establish that Phone Link turns an iPhone into a Windows webcam.
Enable the connected camera
- Link the Android phone to the Windows PC.
- On the PC, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices.
- Add or select the linked Android device and turn on Use as connected camera.
- Open the Windows app you want to use and select the phone as its camera. Microsoft says it will also appear as a camera option in Windows Settings.
If camera permission is missing
If the phone does not request camera permission, Microsoft advises checking for the camera window on the Windows taskbar and confirming that Link to Windows has camera permission on the phone.

Use a Pixel phone as a wired webcam
Google documents a USB webcam mode for Pixel phones. It works with another device that supports USB Video Class (UVC), such as a compatible laptop, TV, car, phone, or tablet. The cable must support data; a charge-only cable will not meet that requirement.
Recommended Free Tools
- Connect the Pixel to the other device with a data-capable USB cable that fits both devices’ ports.
- On the Pixel, tap the USB charging notification.
- Select Webcam.
- On the other device, choose the Pixel as the camera in the app you are using.
The Pixel charges in webcam mode. If a video call or another app needs the phone’s camera, the webcam stream pauses and resumes when that use ends. Google also notes that Pixel phones do not support UVC cameras as input. This setup is specific to Google’s documented Pixel feature; it should not be assumed to work the same way on every Android brand or computer.

Improve framing and reliability
- Stabilize the phone: Use a mount or stand suited to your phone and desk or monitor. A stable position reduces distracting movement.
- Set the camera at a useful angle: For Continuity Camera, Apple recommends landscape orientation and the iPhone’s rear camera facing you. Position the phone so the camera frames you naturally.
- Choose the camera in the app: Enabling the phone feature does not necessarily select it automatically. Check the video app’s camera menu before a call or recording.
- Plan for power and cable fit: Apple recommends USB when the iPhone needs to charge during use; Pixel charges in webcam mode. For Pixel, verify that the USB cable supports data as well as charging.
- Check lighting and the app: A phone camera may produce a better picture than a built-in webcam, but that is not guaranteed. The phone, lighting, connection, and video app all affect the result.
When a third-party webcam app may help
A separate webcam app may be worth considering if your phone and computer do not have a compatible built-in route, or if you need controls your built-in setup does not offer. Check the app maker’s current compatibility information and confirm that your conferencing or streaming app accepts its camera output. The available documentation here does not establish current compatibility, features, or pricing for a specific third-party app.
Do not choose wireless or USB on the assumption that one always delivers better image quality or lower latency. The platform instructions establish setup and requirements, not a universal performance ranking.
