Turn on your Android phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot, then connect to it from your laptop’s Wi-Fi menu using the hotspot password. The laptop will use your phone’s mobile data, so check your carrier’s tethering terms before you rely on it.
Connect a laptop to your Android phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot
- Open Quick Settings on your phone. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Hotspot. On some phones, you may need to swipe down a second time to see all tiles.
- If Hotspot is missing, add it. Tap Edit in Quick Settings and drag the Hotspot tile into the active tiles.
- Check the hotspot name and password. Touch and hold the Hotspot tile to open its settings. Depending on your phone, tap Set up Wi-Fi hotspot to view or change the network name and password.
- Join from the laptop. Open the laptop’s Wi-Fi network list, choose the hotspot name shown on your phone, enter its password, and connect.
Google’s Android hotspot and tethering instructions describe sharing mobile data over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB. The phone’s exact labels and menu locations vary by manufacturer and Android version.
Choose a tethering method

Google says a Wi-Fi hotspot can share a phone’s mobile data with up to 10 other devices. The actual availability of tethering can depend on your carrier and plan.

Check your carrier’s hotspot terms
Some mobile operators limit tethering or charge extra. Check your plan’s hotspot allowance and restrictions before connecting, especially if you expect to use the laptop for a long session. Google’s Android Help notes that carrier limits may apply; it does not establish the terms for any particular carrier or plan.

Fix common hotspot problems
The Hotspot tile is missing
Swipe down to open Quick Settings, tap Edit, and drag Hotspot into the active tiles. The Edit label and tile layout can vary across phones.
The laptop cannot find or join the hotspot
- Make sure Wi-Fi hotspot is turned on in the phone’s settings or Quick Settings.
- In the laptop’s Wi-Fi list, select the network name currently displayed in the phone’s hotspot settings and enter its current password.
- If you changed the hotspot name or password, use the updated details on the laptop.
Wi-Fi tethering is unavailable on a Pixel
For Pixel phones, Google’s Pixel tethering guidance says to turn off Data Saver to tether over Wi-Fi. This is a Pixel-specific instruction, not a universal Android setting.

The hotspot option is unavailable or may cost extra
Ask your mobile operator whether your plan permits tethering and whether additional charges or limits apply.

You are trying to tether an Android phone to a Mac by USB
Google says Android USB tethering is not available with Mac computers. Connect the Mac to the phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot instead.

Reduce unnecessary battery use after connecting
Tethering uses the phone’s battery. Google recommends connecting devices to power while tethering, turning tethering off when you are finished, and enabling automatic hotspot shutoff if your phone offers that option. See Google’s Android instructions for the general guidance; the setting and its location can differ by phone.
