Firefox does not ship a separate tool called “XPath Finder.” XPath searching is built into Firefox Developer Tools in two places: the Inspector’s search box, which accepts XPath expressions, and the Web Console’s $x() helper, which evaluates one and returns the matching nodes. This guide shows how to use both, when each one is the better choice, and what to check when an expression returns nothing.
What “XPath Finder” means in Firefox
XPath is a query language for selecting elements in a page’s document structure. Firefox’s Developer Tools accept XPath in two ways, and both are documented in Mozilla’s official DevTools documentation. If you searched for an “XPath Finder” add-on or a separate Firefox menu item, you will not find one; the built-in features below cover the same task.
Method 1: Search by XPath in the Inspector
The Inspector shows the page’s markup and lets you move between matching elements. Its search box performs full-text, CSS-selector, and XPath searches, so the same box can take an XPath expression.

- Click the Inspector’s search box, or press
Ctrl+F(Windows/Linux) orCmd+F(macOS) to focus it. - Type an XPath expression. For example,
//aselects every anchor element. - Press
Enterto select the first match. Keep pressingEnterto move forward through the matches, or pressShift+Enterto move backward.
Be aware that an XPath search matches elements, not text. //a finds <a> elements; it does not find the letter “a” in the page’s text. If you want to find words on the page, use the Inspector’s plain text search instead.

Method 2: Evaluate XPath with $x() in the Web Console
The Web Console is better when you want to test an expression and work with what it returns, rather than browse the matches in the markup.
- Open Developer Tools and select the Console tab.
- Enter an expression such as
$x("//a")and pressEnter. The helper returns the matching nodes as an array. - To limit the search to part of the page, pass a context element as the second argument. The syntax is
$x(xpath, element, resultType). If you omit the element, the search starts fromdocument. - To request a specific XPath result type, pass it as the third argument. The documented values are
number,string,bool,node, andnodes. If you omit it, the helper usesANY_TYPE.
Because the helper returns an array, you can inspect the results directly in the console, for example by checking how many nodes matched or by examining the first one.

In practice, start an expression in the Console to confirm it selects what you expect, then use the Inspector to step through the matching elements on the page.

When an expression returns no matches
- Check that the expression starts with the right axis.
//searches the whole document, while/starts at the root and expects an exact path. - Check the element name and attribute spelling. XPath matching is case-sensitive for element and attribute names in HTML documents as parsed by the browser.
- If you passed a context element to
$x(), confirm that the element is the one you intended. A path that works fromdocumentmay not match from a narrower element. - If the element you need is inside a frame or is added after the page loads, run the expression again once the content is present.
Each of these checks is a common cause rather than a Firefox-specific bug, so start with the expression itself before assuming the tool is at fault.
