wkhtmltoimage is a command-line tool that renders a web page or HTML file into an image. On Windows, download the appropriate installer or archive from the official wkhtmltopdf downloads page, then run the executable with an input and an output filename. This guide covers setup, first captures, useful options, common problems, and the security limits to understand before using it.

What wkhtmltoimage does

wkhtmltoimage is an open-source, headless command-line utility for rendering HTML pages as images using Qt WebKit. It is part of the wkhtmltopdf project, which provides tools for rendering HTML to PDF and image formats. The project documentation outlines a basic workflow: obtain a precompiled binary, choose or create HTML, and run the tool on it. See the project documentation index.

It is not a browser extension or a Windows screenshot button: you invoke it from Command Prompt or PowerShell, passing a web address or HTML file as input and a destination image filename as output.

Choose and install a Windows package

The official downloads page lists Windows installer builds for Vista or later in both 32-bit and 64-bit variants. It also lists 7z archives for XP/2003 or later, likewise in 32-bit and 64-bit variants. Downloads are hosted through GitHub releases. These are the page’s published package listings, not a current compatibility guarantee: the consulted project page does not provide a Windows 10 or Windows 11 test matrix. Check the live page and verify the release asset before downloading.

Package Architecture options listed Published minimum OS claim What to do
Windows installer 32-bit or 64-bit Vista or later Choose the architecture matching your Windows installation and run the installer.
7z archive 32-bit or 64-bit XP/2003 or later Choose the matching archive and extract it before running the executable.

The package listings do not establish a meaningful performance or feature difference between installer and archive formats. Choose based on how you prefer to install or manage files.

The downloads page states that the stable series is 0.12.6 and gives June 11, 2020 as its release date. Treat that as a dated page claim, not proof that no newer stable release exists; check the live downloads page for current status. The page does not establish compatibility with every current Windows version.

  1. Open the official downloads page and confirm the available release and asset details.
  2. Select the installer or 7z archive matching your system’s architecture.
  3. Run the installer, or extract the archive to a folder you can access.
  4. Open Command Prompt or PowerShell and check whether the command is available by running wkhtmltoimage --version.

If Windows reports that wkhtmltoimage is not recognized, this is a general Windows command-line issue: run the executable by its full path, or add the folder containing it to your PATH and open a new terminal. For example, a full-path invocation has this shape: "C:pathtowkhtmltoimage.exe" --version. Replace the example path with the actual location on your machine.

Convert a web page or local HTML file

The manual gives the general command pattern as:

wkhtmltoimage [OPTIONS]... <input file> <output file>

For a web page, provide its URL followed by the output image filename:

wkhtmltoimage https://example.com page.png

For a local HTML file, provide the input path and an output filename:

wkhtmltoimage index.html page.png

Use quotes around paths that contain spaces, for example wkhtmltoimage "C:UsersSamDocumentsmy page.html" "C:UsersSamDocumentspage.png". The source and destination should be distinct paths. If relative paths are confusing, change to the relevant folder in the terminal or use full paths.

PNG is used in these examples, but available output formats can depend on the installed build. Check wkhtmltoimage --help, wkhtmltoimage --extended-help, or the installed build’s README rather than assuming every format is supported in every version. The project manual’s command syntax and options are documented in the wkhtmltoimage(1) manual; the manual is old, so verify flags locally.

Options that affect the result

Inspect the installed binary’s help before relying on a flag: the manual is dated and different builds may expose different options.

Option Effect When it helps
--width <int> Sets a screen width used as a guideline. The manual says --disable-smart-width can make it strict. When the page layout needs to render at a particular viewport width.
--quality <int> Sets image quality from 0 to 100 in the manual. For output formats where a quality setting applies. It is not a universal image-format control.
--allow <path> Allows files from a specified folder to load; can be repeated. When a local HTML page needs to load local resources such as stylesheets or images.
--window-status <value> Waits for window.status to equal the specified value before rendering. When the page sets that status after its own rendering work is complete.
--version Displays version information. To confirm which binary is running.

For example, if a local page loads an image from a permitted folder and you need to set a width, the command shape is wkhtmltoimage --allow "C:siteassets" --width 1280 index.html page.png. The path and width are examples; use the actual resource folder and desired viewport. Add --disable-smart-width if the installed build supports it and you need the width to be strict.

For a page that sets its status to ready when its content is prepared, the corresponding pattern is wkhtmltoimage --window-status ready https://example.com page.png. This option waits for the specified status value; it does not make a page set that value. Confirm that the page actually does so, or the capture may not proceed as expected.

Local resources, page readiness, and output quality

Local HTML that references files

A local page may refer to images, CSS, or other files using local paths. If those resources do not appear in the image, check that the references resolve from the page’s location and consult the installed help for local-file access options. The manual documents --allow <path> as a way to permit files from a folder, and it can be repeated for multiple folders. Grant access only to folders the page needs.

Pages that fill in content after loading

A command that finishes without the content you expected may have rendered before the page completed its own work. If the page controls readiness through window.status, --window-status can wait for its chosen value. Check the page’s behavior and installed help; do not assume this flag detects every type of asynchronous activity.

Width and quality

Set --width when the layout depends on screen width. The manual describes it as a guideline unless smart width is disabled. The --quality range documented by the manual is 0–100, but the setting is relevant only for formats where quality applies. If the installed build rejects an option, inspect --help and --extended-help for the flags it actually supports.

Troubleshooting

  • “Not recognized” or command not found: The executable may not be on PATH, or the terminal may have been opened before PATH changed. Run the executable using its full path, check the install or extraction folder, or add that folder to PATH and open a fresh terminal.
  • The command runs but no output appears where expected: Check the destination filename and folder, and use an absolute output path to remove ambiguity. Confirm that the process can write to that folder.
  • A local image or stylesheet is missing: Check the resource path in the HTML and whether the installed build permits access to it. Consult help for --allow <path> and specify the required folder.
  • The page layout is too narrow or too wide: Set --width to the desired screen width. If the manual’s smart-width behavior is changing the result, see whether --disable-smart-width is supported by your build.
  • Content is absent because it appears later: Determine whether the page sets a usable window.status value after rendering, then use --window-status with that exact value if supported. The option cannot infer a readiness signal the page does not provide.
  • An option is rejected: Run wkhtmltoimage --help or wkhtmltoimage --extended-help. The online manual is dated, and the installed build’s help is the practical reference for available flags.
  • Unsure which executable or release is running: Run wkhtmltoimage --version, then compare the result with the asset and version information on the official downloads page.

Security and suitability for new deployments

The wkhtmltopdf project’s official downloads page gives this warning: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” The warning concerns untrusted HTML and JavaScript, especially when the converter runs in a server environment. Do not treat a successful local conversion as evidence that processing untrusted input is safe.

The project’s cited stable-series information is dated, and the consulted official page does not provide a Windows 10/11 test matrix. For a new or production deployment, verify the current release and operating-system compatibility yourself, and assess whether an older Qt WebKit-based renderer meets your security and rendering requirements. The available project information does not establish current Windows 11 test results.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture web pages from code without installing and managing a local browser renderer, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, using cURL:

Cookie banners are accepted like a visitor and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs.
