The wkhtmltopdf project’s stable series is 0.12.6 (released in 2020) and its download matrix includes ARM64/aarch64 packages for Debian, Ubuntu, AlmaLinux, CentOS, Amazon Linux 2 and openSUSE, along with Raspberry Pi builds for several Debian releases. A package that merely says “Linux” is not necessarily compatible with your board.
This guide shows how to identify your platform, select and install the correct package, supply the libraries and fonts that the renderer still needs, test output, diagnose common ARM failures, and choose a source-build or modern renderer fallback when no package matches.
1. Confirm that the host is a supported ARM target
Run these commands before downloading anything:
uname -m
cat /etc/os-release
getconf GNU_LIBC_VERSION
# Debian or Ubuntu
dpkg --print-architecture
# RPM-family systems
rpm --eval '%{_arch}'Typical results are aarch64 from uname -m, arm64 from Debian’s package manager, and aarch64 from RPM. A 32-bit ARM result such as armv7l is a different target; do not install an ARM64 package on it.
Record a deployment baseline
Save the OS release, architecture, glibc version, installed fonts and wkhtmltoimage version in your deployment notes. This makes differences between a Raspberry Pi, a cloud ARM VM and an ARM build server explainable when images change.

2. Choose the right package
Use the project’s official download matrix for wkhtmltopdf/wkhtmltox 0.12.6. Match both dimensions:

Do not mix an Ubuntu or Debian package with an RPM-family system, or choose a package for a different distribution release simply because both systems are 64-bit. The statically linked Qt inside these builds reduces Qt-specific compatibility issues, but it does not bundle every system library.
3. Install on Debian or Ubuntu
- Confirm 64-bit userland.
dpkg --print-architectureshould reportarm64. A 64-bit kernel with a 32-bit userland still needs a 32-bit build. - Download the ARM64 package for your exact Debian or Ubuntu family and release from the official matrix.
- Install it with the native package manager. For a local Debian package, use:
sudo apt install ./wkhtmltox_0.12.6-*_arm64.debIf apt reports unresolved dependencies, let it finish dependency resolution with sudo apt -f install, then retry the package installation. Keep the package file and the OS release together in your build record.
When the installer rejects the package
The project’s FAQ notes that a package can be extracted when the installer cannot install it. Extraction does not remove dependency requirements:

dpkg-deb -x wkhtmltox_0.12.6-*_arm64.deb wkhtmltox-extracted
sudo cp -a wkhtmltox-extracted/usr/local/* /usr/local/After extraction, inspect the executable with ldd and install any missing runtime libraries. Prefer a native package installation when possible because it records files and dependencies for upgrades and removal.
4. Install on RPM-based ARM systems
- Verify
rpm --eval '%{_arch}'returnsaarch64. - Choose the RPM built for your exact AlmaLinux, CentOS or Amazon Linux 2 release family.
- Install with the distribution’s package manager, for example:
sudo dnf install ./wkhtmltox-0.12.6-*.aarch64.rpmOn systems that use yum instead of dnf, substitute yum. If the RPM was only unpacked, run ldd $(command -v wkhtmltoimage) and install the reported libraries through the OS repositories rather than copying random shared objects from another machine.

5. Raspberry Pi procedure
First check whether the Pi is running a 64-bit Debian-based OS. uname -m alone describes the kernel, so also check dpkg --print-architecture. Select the Raspberry Pi build that names your Debian release in the official matrix. A package for one Raspberry Pi Debian release is not automatically valid on another.
For a reproducible ARM reference setup, Qt documents a Raspberry Pi 5 with 8 GB RAM running Ubuntu 24.04 as its Linux-on-Arm desktop reference platform. Treat that board and OS as a baseline for testing, not as a guarantee for every ARM SoC or Pi image.

6. Verify the binary and its runtime
Check that the command is on the path and identify the build:
command -v wkhtmltoimage
wkhtmltoimage --version
ldd "$(command -v wkhtmltoimage)" | grep 'not found' || trueA clean --version result proves that the executable launches; it does not prove that fonts, images, JavaScript or CSS will render correctly. Missing entries from ldd must be fixed before investigating HTML.
Install the font and rendering stack
Fontconfig, freetype2 and actual font files are part of the output pipeline. Install the equivalents supplied by your distribution, then refresh the cache:
sudo fc-cache -f -v
fc-list | headInstall the families your pages require, including a Unicode fallback when pages contain non-Latin text. Compare the available fonts with the production environment; a fallback font can change line wrapping, element height and the final image dimensions even when the command exits successfully.

7. Run a deterministic rendering test
Create a local fixture that exercises text, an image and CSS. Keeping the fixture local separates renderer problems from DNS, TLS and remote-page failures:

file /tmp/wkhtml-arm-test.pngInspect the image for missing glyph boxes, unexpected line breaks, absent images and incorrect colors. Repeat the same fixture after OS, font or package changes and compare dimensions as well as visual appearance.
8. Troubleshoot common ARM failures
“Exec format error”
The binary architecture does not match the userland. Recheck uname -m and dpkg --print-architecture or the RPM architecture, then download the corresponding build. Do not assume a 64-bit kernel means every installed program is 64-bit.
“No such file or directory” for an existing executable
This usually indicates a missing ELF interpreter or shared library, not a missing filename. Run file $(command -v wkhtmltoimage) and ldd $(command -v wkhtmltoimage); install the required libc and other runtime packages for the current distribution.

Prebuilt packages depend on the target distribution’s library ABI. Use the package built for that release family rather than replacing system libraries. If no matching build exists, use a source build or a maintained renderer with packages for your OS.
Blank output or a timeout
Test the local fixture first. For a remote page, check DNS, TLS, proxy settings, JavaScript completion and access controls. A page that requires a browser feature unsupported by the old QtWebKit engine may never finish; capture a simplified static version to isolate that limitation.

Text is missing or layout shifts
Install the required font files and run fc-cache -f -v. Confirm that the process user can read the font directories. Compare fc-list output between working and failing hosts.
Images or CSS are absent
Check file permissions and URL accessibility from the rendering process. For local assets, use correct file:// paths and ensure the process is not confined by a service sandbox. For remote assets, verify that the target server permits the renderer’s requests.
9. Source builds and alternatives when packages do not fit
A source build gives control when your libc, distribution release or ARM board is not represented in the package matrix, but it is substantially harder to reproduce. Pin the source revision, compiler, Qt/WebKit dependencies, configure flags and font set, and publish the resulting binary with a repeatable build recipe.
Qt’s current Linux documentation lists arm64 support for Ubuntu 24.04 and Debian 11/12. Its documented minimum glibc versions are 2.28 for Qt 6.8 and 2.34 for Qt 6.10. Building Qt from source can avoid an installer’s glibc restriction, but it does not make wkhtmltoimage’s older QtWebKit engine a modern browser. A different maintained HTML renderer may be preferable when you need current web-platform behavior.

10. Performance, reliability and isolation
ARM performance varies with CPU generation, memory and storage. Measure your own representative pages rather than assuming a desktop timing. Reuse a warm process only if it is safe for your workload, cap concurrent jobs to avoid exhausting RAM, and set an application timeout around each render.
Run the renderer as a dedicated unprivileged user in a container or other restricted environment. Limit network access, filesystem visibility, CPU and memory, and retain the exact input and command line for failed jobs. The project warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” The same QtWebKit process and attack surface apply to wkhtmltoimage, so treat supplied HTML and JavaScript as hostile.

Does a successful –version check prove ARM rendering is correct?
No. It confirms that the executable starts. Fonts, shared libraries, remote assets and QtWebKit compatibility still require a fixture render and inspection.

When should I choose a source build?

Is wkhtmltoimage safe for arbitrary user HTML?
Treat arbitrary HTML and JavaScript as untrusted. Sanitize it and isolate the rendering process with least privilege, resource limits and restricted networking.
