Press Windows+Shift+S to open the Snipping Tool overlay. Choose rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip, select what you need, and Windows copies the image to your clipboard. Paste it with Ctrl+V, or open the notification to edit and save the capture in Snipping Tool.
What Windows+Shift+S does
Microsoft documents Windows logo key + Shift + S as the shortcut that opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay. Your desktop dims while the capture controls appear. The shortcut starts a still-image workflow; it does not immediately create a file in a folder in every Windows configuration.
After you capture, Windows automatically copies the image to the clipboard. You can paste it into email, chat, Word, Paint, an image editor, or another app with Ctrl+V. A notification normally appears as well; selecting it opens the image in Snipping Tool for markup, cropping, saving, or sharing.
Step-by-step: take and save a screenshot
- Prepare the screen. Arrange the page, app, dialog, or other content you want to show.
- Open the overlay. Press the Windows logo key, Shift, and S together.
- Choose a mode. Select rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip from the toolbar.
- Select the capture. Drag around an area for rectangular or freeform mode. In window mode, select the target window; in full-screen mode, Windows captures the screen immediately.
- Use the clipboard copy. Switch to the destination app and press Ctrl+V.
- Open the editor if needed. Select the Snipping Tool notification. If it disappears, open Snipping Tool and use its recent capture when available.
- Edit and save. Use the pen, highlighter, shapes, eraser, crop, or text actions. Select Save or press Ctrl+S, choose a filename and folder, and confirm.
- Share, if required. Use Snipping Tool’s Share command after editing.
Choose the right snip mode
| Mode | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangular | Drag a rectangle over the required area. | A precise portion of a page or application. |
| Freeform | Draw an irregular outline around the content. | Non-rectangular objects or annotations. |
| Window | Select an open window; the window is captured without manually dragging its bounds. | A complete application window. |
| Full-screen | Captures the entire screen immediately. | Everything visible on one monitor. |
Window and full-screen modes can capture immediately. Rectangular and freeform modes require a selection gesture. If you need a video rather than a still image, Windows uses a separate shortcut: Windows+Shift+R opens video snipping.

Where the screenshot goes
The first destination is the clipboard, which is why Ctrl+V works immediately. To create a normal image file, open the capture in Snipping Tool and use Save or Ctrl+S, then select the location and filename.
Current Windows 11 versions may also automatically save captures in the Screenshots folder. The exact behavior depends on Snipping Tool settings. If you need a predictable file path, use Save and choose the folder yourself instead of relying on automatic saving.
Edit, extract, or redact information
Snipping Tool provides pen, highlighter, shapes, eraser, crop, and text actions. Text actions use local OCR: they can copy recognized text from the image and can quickly redact email addresses and phone numbers. Review OCR results before sharing, especially when the screenshot contains small or unusual type.
Editing occurs after capture. If you need to hide sensitive information, crop first and apply redaction before using Share or attaching the image elsewhere.

Capture menus and other temporary interface elements
Menus, tooltips, context menus, and other transient UI can close as soon as you press the shortcut. Open Snipping Tool first, choose its delay option, and set a delay from one to five seconds. Start the delayed capture, open or compose the menu during the countdown, then select the required mode and area.
Keyboard-only and screen-reader operation
Windows supports a keyboard-driven path for users who cannot use a mouse. After opening the snipping interface, use Tab and Enter to reach the snipping-mode menu, then use the arrow keys to choose a mode. Complete the selection with the available keyboard controls. After a successful capture, accessibility guidance documents the announcement Screenshot copied to clipboard.
You can then paste with Ctrl+V or open the notification and save from Snipping Tool.
Windows+Shift+S compared with other built-in shortcuts
| Method | Output | Selection behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Windows+Shift+S | Still image copied to clipboard; editable in Snipping Tool and savable as a file. | Region, freeform, window, or full screen. |
| Print Screen | Static full-screen image copied to the clipboard. | Entire screen rather than a selected region. |
| Windows+Shift+R | Video snipping. | For recording a screen region rather than taking a still. |
Use Windows+Shift+S when you want to choose the capture area. Use Print Screen for a quick full-screen clipboard copy, and Windows+Shift+R when the result needs to be a recording.
Troubleshooting
Nothing happens when I press the shortcut
- Confirm that the Windows logo key works by opening Start with it.
- Check that Shift and S work individually and that the keyboard is sending the combination.
- Try the shortcut on a Windows-compatible keyboard with a working Windows key.
- Open Snipping Tool from Start as a fallback, then begin a capture from the app.
The screenshot copied, but I cannot find a file
That is expected for the clipboard-first workflow. Paste the image into an app, or select the notification, open it in Snipping Tool, and use Save or Ctrl+S. Check Snipping Tool’s automatic-save setting and the Screenshots folder if your Windows 11 installation is configured to save captures automatically.

The capture is the wrong size or includes unwanted content
Press the shortcut again and choose rectangular or freeform mode. For a complete application, use window mode. For a whole monitor, use full-screen mode. Crop the result in Snipping Tool before saving.
A menu disappeared before I captured it
Use Snipping Tool’s one-to-five-second delay, then open the menu during the countdown.
I need text from the screenshot
Open the capture in Snipping Tool and use its text actions. Local OCR can copy recognized text; check the copied result for recognition errors.
I need to hide an email address or phone number
Use the text actions’ quick redaction capability, then inspect the image at full size before sharing. Cropping out the information is preferable when the surrounding context is not needed.

Why do I not see every Snipping Tool feature?
Features such as Perfect screenshot and Color picker are limited to Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs. They are not universal Snipping Tool controls, so their absence on another Windows 11 computer is not necessarily an installation problem.
Reliability and privacy checklist
- Verify the selected mode before dragging or clicking; the toolbar can remain on the previous mode.
- Save a copy when the screenshot is evidence you may need again; clipboard contents can be replaced by the next copy operation.
- Inspect notifications and the saved file before closing the source app.
- Remove passwords, tokens, personal messages, and other sensitive data before sharing.
- For high-DPI displays, zoom the saved image to confirm that small text and cursor details are legible.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a repeatable website capture rather than a one-off desktop snip, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one API request. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets, and lets you turn each cleanup step off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the result identified by X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. A minimal cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
For automation, ScreenshotNeo also offers full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
