WinBoat lets you use supported Windows desktop applications from a Linux desktop, but the applications still run inside Windows in a virtual machine. WinBoat connects their windows to Linux through Windows RemoteApp and FreeRDP; it does not turn Windows software into native Linux apps.
How WinBoat runs Windows applications
WinBoat is an Electron application that manages a Windows virtual machine inside a Docker or Podman container. In the project’s description, the WinBoat Guest Server provides information from the Windows guest, while FreeRDP and Windows RemoteApp display individual application windows on the Linux desktop. WinBoat also describes mounting the user’s home directory in Windows for file sharing. These are project descriptions, not independent performance results. WinBoat project README
The practical distinction is that Windows is still running behind the scenes. You need the VM, its storage, and a supported container runtime; the Linux desktop integration makes Windows applications feel more like part of the Linux workflow.

Check your system before installing
WinBoat’s README lists these minimum requirements and prerequisites. Meeting them does not guarantee that a particular Windows application will run smoothly.

- At least 4 GB of RAM.
- At least 2 CPU threads.
- At least 32 GB of free space on the drive corresponding to the selected installation folder.
- KVM enabled in BIOS or UEFI.
- FreeRDP 3.x with sound support.
- Either Docker with Docker Compose v2, or Podman with Podman Compose.
Docker Desktop is not supported. The README instructs Docker users to add their account to the Docker group. For Debian and Ubuntu users, it warns that distribution repositories may offer a Podman version that is too old; it calls for Podman 4.x.x or later. Check the current README and your distribution’s package instructions for exact setup steps, since project requirements and package availability can change. WinBoat project README
Choose a container runtime
The documented choices are Docker or Podman. Use the one you can install and maintain on your distribution, with the required Compose integration. The project materials do not establish a universal performance advantage for either runtime.

- Docker: Requires Docker and Docker Compose v2. Docker Desktop is explicitly unsupported, and the README includes a Docker-group setup instruction.
- Podman: Requires Podman and Podman Compose. On Debian or Ubuntu, check the installed version against the README’s 4.x.x-or-later requirement. The README says USB passthrough through Podman is unsupported.
If USB passthrough matters to your workflow, check the current release documentation before choosing a runtime. The FAQ describes USB passthrough as experimental starting with WinBoat 0.8.0, while the README specifically excludes it through Podman; behavior can therefore depend on version and runtime. The project lists several installation formats. Choose the one suited to your distribution and package-management preference, then follow the current official instructions rather than relying on an old package-specific guide.

- AppImage: A broadly portable format according to the project, but not a guarantee of compatibility with every distribution.
- Unpacked Linux files: An option listed in the README for users who prefer to handle the application files directly.
- Debian package: The
.debpackage path. - Fedora package: The
.rpmpackage path. - Nix: The project points to nixpkgs-unstable.
Installation packages are different ways to install the WinBoat application; they do not remove the separate need for KVM, a supported container runtime, FreeRDP, and sufficient disk space. Beta status and troubleshooting

Graphics-intensive software
The official FAQ says GPU acceleration is not currently available. That makes WinBoat a poor assumption for applications that depend on 3D acceleration or demanding graphics. The FAQ says games using kernel anti-cheat cannot run because those systems block virtualization. WinBoat should not be treated as a general workaround for games that do not run on Linux. WinBoat official site and FAQ

Office 365
The WinBoat FAQ says Office 365 can run. That is the project’s statement, not independent testing, and it does not settle licensing, subscription, account, or edition requirements for your specific copy. Confirm those requirements with the relevant Office documentation before relying on this setup. WinBoat official site and FAQ
Decide whether WinBoat fits your use
WinBoat is most plausible when you need an ordinary Windows desktop application, want to keep Linux as your main desktop, and accept the overhead and upkeep of a Windows VM. Before committing, check that your exact application works in the Windows environment you plan to use and that its hardware, graphics, licensing, and peripheral needs fit the limitations above.
The project’s README and FAQ are mutable. Check them again for current release requirements and feature status before installing, especially if you depend on USB passthrough or a specific Linux distribution. WinBoat project README WinBoat official site and FAQ
