To use WebDriverManager with Selenium, add the io.github.bonigarcia:webdrivermanager dependency to your Java project, then call WebDriverManager.chromedriver().setup() before creating a ChromeDriver. This lets WebDriverManager handle ChromeDriver setup so you can start a Selenium session without manually locating the driver binary. For projects that need only automatic driver management, Selenium Manager—shipped with Selenium—may be enough.
Add WebDriverManager to your Java project
WebDriverManager is a Java library for managing browser drivers used by Selenium. It can also discover browsers, construct WebDriver instances, and run browsers in Docker. Add it as a test dependency if it is used only by automated tests. The official examples use a version placeholder rather than specifying a universal version, so verify the version you select against the current release information in the WebDriverManager repository.
Maven
Add a dependency to your project’s pom.xml, replacing VERSION with the version you have chosen:

Set up ChromeDriver and start a Selenium session
Call setup() before constructing ChromeDriver. Here is a complete Java example that opens a page and closes the browser session even if an operation fails:

}The setup call prepares the Chrome driver before Selenium starts the browser. Replace the example URL with the page your test should visit. Always call driver.quit() when the session is finished so the browser and driver process are shut down.

Do you still need WebDriverManager with Selenium 4?
Not necessarily. Selenium Manager is included with Selenium and can handle automatic driver management, so it may cover a project whose only requirement is resolving and managing a browser driver. WebDriverManager remains relevant when you need capabilities beyond that basic task, such as browser creation in Docker or monitoring. Make the choice based on the features your project uses, rather than adding a second driver-management dependency by habit. The official WebDriverManager documentation describes this distinction.

Java and Selenium compatibility depend on the versions selected for your project. The official materials cited here do not establish a current universal dependency version or a complete compatibility matrix; check the release metadata and documentation for the versions you intend to use before pinning them.

In the common Chrome flow, WebDriverManager.chromedriver().setup() prepares the driver so Selenium can start ChromeDriver. The point is to avoid manually managing the driver executable in the test setup. The official project also documents browser discovery, WebDriver construction, and running browsers in Docker; consult its documentation source for the options relevant to those workflows.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
The project cannot find WebDriverManager
Check that the dependency is declared in the correct Maven or Gradle build file and that the build has been reloaded. Confirm that the group and artifact are io.github.bonigarcia and webdrivermanager, and that the selected version is a real published version.
ChromeDriver cannot start
Verify that the local Chrome browser is installed and can launch. Confirm that the manager setup call runs before new ChromeDriver(), and check the selected WebDriverManager and Selenium versions against their current documentation. A setup call made after driver construction cannot prepare that already-created session.
The browser opens but the test does not finish cleanly
Ensure the test closes the WebDriver session with driver.quit(), preferably in a finally block. This helps avoid leaving browser processes running when an assertion or navigation fails.
