Web Live Preview is a Visual Studio IDE feature associated with Web Forms projects. To try it, open Tools > Options > Web Forms Designer > General, select Web Live Preview as the designer if that option appears, and restart Visual Studio if prompted. Then open the page in the designer and run the app using its normal workflow. First check which tool and project you have: Visual Studio Web Live Preview is not the similarly named VS Code extension, and it is not the ASP.NET Core Hot Reload workflow.
What Web Live Preview does—and what it does not do
Microsoft presented Web Live Preview in a Visual Studio 2022 context for building Web Forms projects: edits can be reflected in a running app. A Microsoft Visual Studio Toolbox episode published September 9, 2021, demonstrates the feature with Sayed Hashimi, identified in the episode description as a PM on the ASP.NET team. That establishes the feature’s purpose, but it does not establish that every current Visual Studio release exposes the same controls or supports every project and edit.
The name can lead to confusion because related preview and refresh features live in different products and workflows:

- VS Code Live Preview: a separate VS Code extension. Instructions for its command palette or context menu do not enable the Visual Studio designer.
- ASP.NET Core Hot Reload and Browser Refresh: framework-specific workflows for applying supported code changes while an app runs. They are not the Web Forms Designer setting.
- Edge DevTools and JavaScript debugging: optional browser-inspection capabilities integrated with Visual Studio; they are not prerequisites for simply viewing a preview.
If the option is missing, identify the product and project family before troubleshooting. A Web Forms Designer setting is not a general switch for all web projects.
How do I enable Web Live Preview in Visual Studio?
The reported enablement route is in Visual Studio’s Options dialog. Treat the exact label as version-dependent: the cited path comes from a Microsoft Q&A answer, not a current, version-by-version compatibility reference.
- Open the Visual Studio IDE, not Visual Studio Code, and confirm that you are working with a Web Forms project.
- Open Tools > Options.
- Look under Web Forms Designer > General for the Web Forms designer selection.
- If Web Live Preview is offered, select it. If Visual Studio asks you to restart, restart the IDE.
- Open the web page in the designer and run the application using the project’s normal workflow. Make an edit and observe whether it appears in the running app.
If the setting is not present, do not assume that a similarly named VS Code feature is the answer. Check the installed Visual Studio release’s documentation and confirm the project type. The available evidence does not provide a complete matrix of supported Visual Studio versions, workloads, project types, or individual edits.

How to see Web Forms changes live
Use the designer and running application together: the designer is where you work with the page, and the running app is where you check the result. Microsoft’s feature description supports live reflection of changes in a running app, but does not enumerate every edit type or guarantee behavior across all Web Forms projects. Verify the actual change in your own app rather than assuming every edit is applied without a restart.

- Start the app with its established run workflow.
- Change the page and check the running result. If it does not update, distinguish a designer-preview issue from an app build, runtime, or browser-debugging issue before changing settings.
- For edits that are not reflected, use the project’s normal rebuild or restart workflow and verify the result again. The available Microsoft material does not specify a universal list of changes that can be applied live.
Web Live Preview is a way to see the app while developing; it should not be treated as proof that the page has been tested across browsers, devices, or production conditions.
When to use Edge debugging instead
If your goal is to inspect JavaScript behavior, set breakpoints, or examine the page in browser developer tools, use Visual Studio’s separate Edge debugging workflow. Microsoft documents launching an Edge preview channel from Visual Studio, enabling script debugging, attaching the JavaScript debugger, and opening Edge DevTools from the design window. Those steps are for debugging, not a requirement just to display a preview.

Follow the Microsoft instructions for the installed Visual Studio and Edge versions when configuring this workflow. The source information available here does not specify current menu labels or a version-independent click path, so avoid relying on old screenshots or assuming all Edge channels expose identical options.
Should I use Web Live Preview or ASP.NET Core Hot Reload?
Choose based on the project family and the task. Web Live Preview is discussed in a Web Forms Designer context. ASP.NET Core applications use their framework’s Hot Reload and Browser Refresh behavior instead; do not look for the Web Forms Designer option as the general ASP.NET Core solution.
Microsoft’s Hot Reload guidance describes CSS updates while an app is running and automatic browser refresh for Razor edits in supported .NET 6-and-later scenarios. Support depends on the target framework, Debug configuration, and Hot Reload settings. Check the guidance for your exact target framework and configuration before relying on a particular edit being applied or the browser refreshing automatically.

Why is Web Live Preview missing from Visual Studio?
- You may be using VS Code. The products have separate preview features. Open the project in Visual Studio IDE if you are following the Web Forms Designer route.
- The project may not be Web Forms. The feature is described for Web Forms; ASP.NET Core has a separate Hot Reload workflow.
- The option label or availability may differ. The cited setup route is a Microsoft Q&A report, and there is no complete current compatibility matrix here. Check documentation for your installed release rather than assuming the path is identical.
- The IDE may need a restart. The Q&A response says to restart after selecting the Web Live Preview designer. If the option was changed and the IDE remains open, restart and check again.
- You may be seeking debugging rather than preview. JavaScript breakpoints and Edge DevTools use the separate debugging workflow.
If you have confirmed that you are in Visual Studio with a Web Forms project and still cannot find the setting, consult Microsoft’s documentation or support for that exact release. Do not install a VS Code extension as a substitute for a missing Visual Studio option.
