Waze works on Android Auto when you connect a compatible phone to a compatible car display, either wirelessly or with a USB cable. You can choose destinations by voice or on the display, use saved places from the Waze app, and submit community reports. These tools provide navigation information; official help documentation does not establish that Waze on Android Auto prevents crashes or makes driving measurably safer.
Connect Waze to Android Auto
Waze’s Android Auto guide supports connecting your phone to the car display by USB or wirelessly. Compatibility depends on your vehicle or receiver, so check with its manufacturer if Android Auto or Waze does not appear. Some supported vehicles can also show Waze navigation in the instrument cluster. Waze: Use Waze on Android Auto
Waze’s beta setup guidance recommends Bluetooth or a high-quality USB cable for the setup path it describes and suggests signing in and configuring preferences on your phone first. Treat the cable recommendation as guidance for that documented setup, not a universal requirement: Waze’s main Android Auto instructions also allow a wireless connection. If you choose wired use, check that the cable and phone and vehicle ports are compatible. Waze beta setup guidance

After connecting, open Waze on the car display and select a destination using the display or voice. Waze examples of spoken requests include “Take me home” and “Navigate to work.” Places saved in the Waze mobile app are available to select in Android Auto. Waze: Use Waze on Android Auto

What navigation information can you get?
Waze provides navigation and route information within Android Auto. Android Auto says compatible navigation apps can provide voice-guided navigation, estimated arrival times, live traffic information and lane guidance. Those are Android Auto capabilities, not features unique to Waze. Google: Get turn-by-turn navigation
Waze can tailor routes and estimated arrival times using past drives and route selections. For example, it may favor a road or highway entrance you often choose. The setting is enabled by default, but availability can depend on your location and having enough navigation history. To turn it off, use the personalization control in Waze settings described in Waze’s personalized navigation help.

The documentation does not say how often it changes a route or establish that it improves safety outcomes. Waze: Personalized navigation Waze: Avoid difficult intersections
Submit a road report
Waze lets drivers report traffic, police, crashes, hazards, bad weather, blocked lanes and map issues. The usual workflow is to choose the relevant report on the display and submit it. These are community reports shown as navigation information, not verified hazard detection or a guaranteed warning. Waze: Use Waze on Android Auto
Waze’s Talk to report feature lets a user describe what they see; Waze adds a report to the map and may ask follow-up questions. Availability varies by country. The help page says Talk to report is supported on Android Auto but not currently on Android Automotive. Waze: Talk to report

It is a route preference, not a guarantee that every challenging junction will be avoided. Waze: Avoid difficult intersections
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Waze and Android Auto safety: what the evidence supports
Waze’s reports and route guidance can help drivers see navigation information, but the official product help pages are operating instructions, not safety evaluations. The reviewed official sources provide no named, dated quantitative statistic or evaluation showing that Waze on Android Auto reduces crashes or incidents. Do not treat a police, crash or hazard report as confirmation that a condition is present, or assume a suggested route is safer.

When choosing between Waze and another navigation app
The official Android Auto documentation describes navigation information available through Google Maps or another compatible app, including traffic, arrival estimates and lane guidance. Waze’s distinct documented tools here include community road reports, Talk to report where available, personalized-routing controls and the difficult-intersection preference. The sources do not provide a controlled performance or safety comparison between Waze and Google Maps, so there is no evidence-based winner to declare.
