To run a prerecorded playlist through vMix and YouTube Live, prepare a playlist in vMix, copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, enter them in vMix’s streaming settings, then test and monitor the broadcast. This is a locally operated workflow: the computer running vMix, its network connection, and the stream itself all need an operating and recovery plan. Neither starting vMix nor using a playlist guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.

What you need before setting up

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so confirm access before scheduling a launch. YouTube’s encoder setup guide and live-streaming tips describe these requirements.
  • vMix installed on a computer that can remain powered on and connected for the period you want to stream.
  • The video files you intend to play, plus a plan for checking playback, audio, network connectivity, and recovery if the stream stops.
  • Access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room so you can create or select a stream and retrieve its URL and key.

Prepare the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live to reach Live Control Room, then create or select the stream you intend to use.
  2. Open the stream settings and select an existing stream key or create one. YouTube allows custom keys for reuse. Copy both the displayed stream URL and the key; the URL identifies the server destination, while the key identifies the stream feed. See YouTube’s stream settings instructions.
  3. Treat the key like a password. Do not publish it, include it in a public configuration file, or show it in tutorial screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in vMix.
  4. If you plan to use RTMPS, choose the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room and confirm that your installed vMix version supports the selected protocol. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL; its RTMPS URL may be hidden behind a lock control while the ordinary RTMP URL is displayed. Do not pair an RTMP URL with an RTMPS setup, or vice versa. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

Build the playlist in vMix

vMix has two related features that serve different purposes. PlayList automates multiple inputs, with per-item start time, duration, and transition. A List Input loads multiple media files as a single input; vMix documentation says it accepts video, audio, and M3U playlist files. Choose based on whether you want to schedule and transition among inputs or group files into one input. The distinction is covered in the vMix feature overview, and the vMix training videos include tutorials for both features.

  1. Add the media files you intend to use as inputs in vMix, or prepare the grouped files for a List Input.
  2. For an automated sequence across inputs, use PlayList to set each item’s start time, duration, and transition. For a group of media files that should be loaded as one input, use List Input instead.
  3. Before using the sequence unattended, test the behavior in your installed vMix version: confirm what happens at the end of an item, whether the sequence repeats as intended, and how missing or inaccessible files are handled. Do not assume a loop setting, gapless transitions, or recovery behavior without verifying it in your own setup.

Enter the YouTube URL and key in vMix

Use vMix’s YouTube Live destination flow if it is available in your installed release, or configure the streaming destination using the server/URL and stream-key fields. Paste the URL from the matching YouTube protocol setting into the server or URL field, then enter the key in the stream-key field. vMix’s YouTube Live guide describes sending the YouTube key from vMix; menu names and locations can vary by version, so use the help for the release you have installed rather than relying on a version-specific path that may not match your screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once configured, start the vMix stream and check Live Control Room for the incoming signal and preview before treating it as live to viewers. Keep the key private even when saving a reusable configuration.

Test the broadcast and plan for long-running operation

  1. Run a test stream before promoting the channel. Use an unlisted or private stream when appropriate for your setup and audience.
  2. In Live Control Room, check the preview and confirm the event is accessible as intended. Open the watch page on desktop and mobile, and verify that the video and audio are present and synchronized.
  3. Watch and listen while the playlist advances through items and transitions. YouTube recommends checking the preview, testing, and continuously monitoring audio and video; see its live-streaming tips.
  4. Decide who will notice a failure and who can restart the workflow. Account for the local computer, vMix, power, internet connection, stream key, and YouTube as possible points of interruption. A UPS may help with a brief local power interruption, but it cannot fix an internet or platform outage and does not guarantee 24/7 availability.
  5. Plan stream segmentation and archive handling rather than assuming one broadcast can remain live indefinitely. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that guidance does not establish that longer streams will be saved or that a single broadcast can run indefinitely. Check YouTube’s current duration and archive rules when planning a long-running channel. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Troubleshooting common setup problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
vMix sends no signal to YouTube Incorrect server URL, key, or protocol selection. Compare the URL and key with the current values in Live Control Room. If using RTMPS, make sure vMix is configured for the RTMPS URL rather than the ordinary RTMP URL, and verify protocol support for your installed vMix release.
The stream will not activate when expected The channel may not yet be eligible or first-time activation may still be processing. Check channel verification and live-stream restrictions. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours; do this check before a planned launch.
The preview is blank, silent, or shows the wrong item The selected input, playlist sequence, source file, or audio route may not be configured as intended. Inspect the active vMix input and playlist, then test each file and transition while watching and listening in Live Control Room.
The playlist stops or does not repeat as expected End-of-item, repeat, or missing-file behavior can depend on the configuration and installed version. Test the complete sequence in your own release, including its end and any unavailable files. Do not rely on an unverified loop or gapless-playback assumption.
The broadcast stops after a local interruption The computer, vMix process, power, or network may have failed, or YouTube may have dropped the feed. Identify who will monitor the stream and restart it, and test the recovery procedure. A locally running setup depends on the computer and connection remaining available.
The stream key no longer works The key may have been reset or exposed. Copy the current key from Live Control Room and update vMix. If it may have been exposed, reset it first and replace the saved value.
