Short answer: YouTube supports live streams from compatible encoders, but current YouTube documentation does not confirm that VLC can send the recommended RTMPS feed to YouTube or loop and restart a video reliably for uninterrupted 24/7 streaming. So there is no verified VLC setup I can responsibly give you as a working, continuous solution. You can still prepare the YouTube side, check VLC compatibility with a short test, and choose a cloud service if you need the stream to keep running while your computer is off.
What you need to know before trying VLC
VLC is a media player with streaming capabilities, but that alone does not establish that the current version can meet YouTube’s ingest requirements or keep a file looping without interruption. YouTube’s documentation describes how to connect a compatible encoder; it does not certify VLC. The available official-source checks also did not establish a current VLC procedure for YouTube RTMPS or uninterrupted looping. Treat VLC compatibility as something to verify with your installed version and a test stream—not as a guaranteed feature.
This distinction matters for a 24/7 channel. A file that plays repeatedly on your computer is not necessarily a continuous YouTube broadcast. The encoder must remain connected, YouTube must receive a supported feed, and playback must resume correctly if the file, network, or encoder stops.
Check whether your channel can stream
Before configuring any encoder, check channel eligibility in YouTube. YouTube’s general live-streaming requirements say the channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16 years old. If the channel cannot go live, changing VLC settings will not solve the problem.

Get YouTube’s stream URL and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one.
- Open Stream settings and reveal the ingest details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Choose the RTMPS URL if your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP transmitted over TLS/SSL and recommends it for encrypted ingestion. Do not assume VLC supports the YouTube RTMPS workflow; confirm that for your installed release before relying on it.
- Keep the stream key private. It is a credential that allows an encoder to send video to your broadcast. Do not publish it, send it to viewers, or leave it exposed in a screenshot. If you believe it has been disclosed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings.
Test VLC compatibility instead of assuming it
Because a current VLC-to-YouTube RTMPS procedure and reliable continuous-loop behavior are not established here, do not treat any menu path or command line found elsewhere as confirmed for your version. Test only when you can monitor the broadcast and stop it if it fails.
- Use a private or unlisted test stream. In Live Control Room, create or schedule a test stream and retrieve its URL and key. Avoid starting with a public 24/7 broadcast.
- Check VLC’s current documentation and interface. Confirm that your version can output to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL and can repeat the source in the way your workflow requires. If it offers only an RTMP endpoint, do not assume that it meets YouTube’s recommended encrypted workflow.
- Use a short test file with audio and motion. A static image or silent clip will not reveal all playback, audio, or encoding problems.
- Configure only settings that your encoder exposes and can match to YouTube’s current specifications. The settings depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec. Avoid guessing at bitrate, keyframe interval, or protocol options.
- Start the test and inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Confirm moving video and sound, then check stream health. A successful short test does not prove the setup will loop or recover unattended for 24 hours.
Match encoder settings to YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1 options, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate. Use the profile and values that match your source and the currently published YouTube settings; different resolutions, frame rates, and codecs have different requirements.

- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Example bitrate: For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. This is an example for that specific resolution, frame rate, and codec—not a universal target.
- Upload capacity: YouTube recommends about 20% more upload bandwidth than the stream bitrate. Leave this headroom for network variation rather than planning to use every bit of your connection’s measured upload speed.
- Test conditions: Test with video motion and audio similar to the material you intend to broadcast. Inspect the preview and continue to monitor stream health, sound, and picture quality while live.
These are YouTube-side recommendations. They do not show that VLC exposes the necessary controls or implements them correctly for your particular setup.

What “24/7” and YouTube archives mean
A continuous channel requires more than starting one encoder session: playback and the network must stay available, and the encoder must reconnect or restart successfully after interruptions. YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that one stream can run uninterrupted for 24 hours or longer, nor that a 24/7 broadcast will be preserved as one archive. Treat ongoing delivery and archive behavior as separate requirements.

If you need a long-running channel, decide how you will handle a stopped VLC process, a lost internet connection, a computer restart, or a stream dropped by YouTube. The material available for this guide does not verify that VLC will automatically recover from those failures.
Copyright and monetization checks
Only stream video and audio you have the rights or permission to use. A video being pre-recorded, publicly accessible, or suitable for looping does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s current copyright rules and channel monetization requirements before building a recurring stream around third-party material. A technical connection test cannot establish that content is eligible for monetization or free of claims.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Confirm the stream URL and key were copied from the intended Live Control Room stream, check that the key has not been changed, and verify that the encoder supports the selected ingest protocol. Do not assume VLC RTMPS compatibility. |
| The preview is black, frozen, or silent | Check that the encoder is sending the intended source, and test a clip with both motion and audio. Inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators. |
| The stream reports instability or drops | Check upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. Test under conditions similar to the intended broadcast and monitor stream health. |
| A short test works, but the stream does not continue overnight | A short test does not prove reliable looping or unattended recovery. Check whether VLC repeats the file and whether it can reconnect after a process, network, or YouTube interruption; these behaviors are not established by YouTube’s encoder documentation. |
| The stream ends or the archive is shorter than expected | YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. That guidance does not promise a single archive for a longer 24/7 session. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube certify VLC as a live-streaming encoder?
