VLC can play an internet radio feed, but the documented workflow for sending a live stream to YouTube uses a YouTube-compatible encoder. Use VLC to receive the station audio, route that audio into an encoder that can publish to YouTube, and give the encoder a still image or other video. The exact audio-routing steps depend on your operating system, encoder, and VLC version; the sources available here do not establish one universal set of menus.
What you need—and why VLC alone may not be enough
Think of this as two jobs: VLC plays the station’s network audio, and an encoder sends a video-and-audio stream to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, YouTube provides a server URL and stream key for the encoder to use.
VideoLAN’s published streaming-features list documents output methods including HTTP and RTP/UDP, but it does not list RTMP or RTMPS. That list is not a version-specific guide and does not prove that no VLC build or add-on can ever publish by another route. It does mean the reviewed documentation does not establish a direct VLC-to-YouTube procedure. Do not assume that pasting YouTube’s server URL and key into VLC will work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou will need:
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: it must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- The station’s actual audio-feed URL, if the station makes one available and your VLC version can open it. A station website or web-player page is not necessarily the feed URL.
- An encoder that supports YouTube’s ingestion settings and can receive audio routed from VLC on your computer.
- A still image or other video source for the encoder’s picture.
- Permission to rebroadcast the particular station content on YouTube, including any music rights needed for your intended territory and any saved replay.
Set up the YouTube live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. YouTube’s encoder setup provides the server URL and stream key.
- Copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder. Use the values for that live event. YouTube says the key tells the encoder where to send the feed and enables YouTube to accept it; treat it like a password and do not share it publicly.
- Choose the event’s visibility and timing deliberately. If you schedule the event, allow time to test the incoming feed and inspect the preview before the intended start. The encoder connection and the event’s availability to viewers are separate parts of the setup.
Open the station feed in VLC and route its audio
- Find the station’s direct feed address. Look for an audio-stream link provided by the station, rather than assuming the page URL for its web player is a media URL. Only use a feed the station permits you to rebroadcast.
- Open the feed in VLC. Use the network-media opening method supported by your installed VLC version and confirm that you can hear continuous audio. Menu names and available stream options can vary by version and platform.
- Make the encoder receive VLC’s playback audio. Configure audio capture or routing appropriate to your operating system and encoder. This is the platform-dependent part: no universal capture device or click-by-click menu path is established here. Check the encoder’s input meter or preview rather than assuming it is hearing VLC just because VLC is playing.
- Add a picture source. Configure the encoder with a still image or other suitable video alongside the audio. The YouTube encoder model expects a video feed with audio; confirm that the preview shows the intended picture and that the station audio is audible.
- Connect and inspect the preview. Start the encoder feed to YouTube, then check Live Control Room for the incoming preview and stream-health messages. If the event requires a separate start or Go Live action in YouTube, use the control shown for that event only after the preview is ready.
Use compatible YouTube encoder settings
These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not VLC-specific settings. Configure them in the encoder you use. For an audio-led stream with a static picture, there is no need to pursue a high video resolution simply to transmit the station sound.

| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps. |
| Keyframe interval | Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds. |
| Rate control | CBR. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3. |
| Stereo audio sample rate | 44.1 kHz recommended. |
| Stereo audio bitrate | 128 kbps recommended. |
Choose an encoder video bitrate and resolution that your upload connection can sustain. The guidance above does not specify a single video bitrate for every resolution, so do not treat an arbitrary bitrate as a universal requirement. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and watching the stream-health indicators.
Test, go live, and end the stream
- Run a private or otherwise suitable test before the public broadcast. Confirm VLC continues to receive the station feed, the encoder’s audio meter moves, the picture is present, and the YouTube preview has both picture and sound.
- Listen for continuity and quality. A preview that appears connected is not enough if the audio is silent, intermittent, distorted, or out of sync. Test under conditions comparable to the planned event and review YouTube’s stream-health notices.
- Monitor the event while it is live. Check the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room for dropped input, connection warnings, or a missing preview. A weak or unstable upload connection can affect stream health.
- Stop the encoder feed when finished. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Consider the rights and intended availability of that replay as well as the live broadcast.
Copyright, station permission, and saved replays
A station’s public listen link does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast its programming. Check the station’s terms and obtain the necessary rights for the music and other content, the territories where viewers may watch, and any replay you plan to leave available. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the creator to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies such content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the creator; if the content remains, the livestream may be interrupted or terminated. A rights holder may need to add a channel to its Content ID allowlist even when the creator has a license, and claims on an archived stream may appear after the broadcast ends. A public feed, an unlisted YouTube event, or a license without any required allowlisting is not a guarantee against interruption.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Possible cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC plays audio, but YouTube is silent. | The encoder is not receiving VLC’s audio output. | Check the encoder’s selected audio input and level meter, then confirm that the operating system’s audio-routing or capture setup sends VLC playback to that input. |
| The station page opens, but VLC does not play the feed. | The page URL may lead to a web player rather than a direct media feed, or the feed may not be compatible with the installed VLC version. | Look for a station-provided stream address and test that address in VLC. Do not assume a browser page address is the audio URL. |
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview. | The encoder may be disconnected, using an incorrect server URL or stream key, or not yet sending a compatible feed. | Recheck the event’s server URL and key in the encoder, its connection status, and the selected output protocol and settings. |
| The preview appears, but viewers cannot see the event. | The encoder feed may be connected while the event still awaits a separate start action, or the event timing or visibility may not be as intended. | Check the event’s Live Control Room state and follow the on-screen control for starting that event. |
| YouTube reports stream-health problems or the feed drops. | The upload connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the outgoing stream. | Review YouTube’s health messages, reduce settings if the connection cannot sustain them, and test again with comparable content before restarting. |
| The stream is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder. | YouTube may have identified third-party content, including music in the station feed. | Review the YouTube notice, confirm the relevant rights and any required Content ID allowlisting with the rights holder, and do not restart the same content until the issue is resolved. |
Cost and practical limits
The workflow uses software and a computer capable of playing the station feed and running an encoder; YouTube says expensive equipment is not required. A tuner, capture card, or special cable is not inherently needed to relay a network audio feed. The main practical cost may be the computer and reliable upload connection you already have, plus any separate licensing costs that apply. No specific encoder product or hardware purchase is necessary to explain this workflow.
