Yes, VLC can process and stream prerecorded video, but rotating its preview alone does not rotate the feed YouTube receives. The rotation must be applied in VLC’s stream-output pipeline, and the completed output must be checked in YouTube’s Live Control Room. VideoLAN documents stream processing, filters and network output, but does not publish a current, tested, click-by-click VLC-to-YouTube rotation recipe. Treat the setup as something to validate before relying on it live.
What the setup requires
The workflow has three parts: configure VLC to read the video and apply rotation to the transmitted output; connect that output to YouTube using the stream details from Live Control Room; then verify the orientation and stream health at YouTube. VLC’s stream-output documentation describes processing media and sending output to a file or network. Its transcoding documentation describes applying an audio or video filter in a network-streaming pipeline. Those capabilities do not establish that every VLC version or build supports the exact YouTube ingest protocol or exposes the same controls.
- A computer with VLC and the prerecorded file.
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- The stream URL and stream key shown for the stream you create or select.
- An upload connection with enough capacity for the chosen video settings.
No webcam or capture card is needed to stream a file. Do not share the stream key: it grants access to send video to that stream.
Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream’s settings. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to find and use these details.
- Keep the key private. Do not put it in a public screenshot, tutorial, shared configuration file or command-history example. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Check the ingest protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP, and explains the relevant settings in its encoder settings guidance and RTMPS setup guidance. Do not assume that a VLC build can connect to a given RTMPS URL just because VLC supports network output generally; confirm protocol and authentication support for your specific output module.
Configure VLC so rotation reaches YouTube
The key distinction is between rotating what you see in VLC and rotating the encoded stream sent out. A display-only change is not enough. VLC’s documentation supports the broader idea of applying a video filter in stream output, but the exact current transform-filter name, placement, GUI route and YouTube-compatible output settings are not verified as one tested procedure. VLC controls and available modules can vary by version, operating system and build.

- In VLC, choose a stream-output/transcoding workflow that reads the prerecorded file and sends the processed result over the network. Use documentation for your installed VLC version to identify the available output modules and settings.
- Configure the video transformation as part of that output pipeline—not solely as a preview or display effect. Select the needed orientation, such as a quarter-turn rotation, based on how the footage was recorded.
- Configure transcoding and output settings compatible with the ingest protocol and YouTube encoder settings. If VLC cannot connect to YouTube’s current RTMPS endpoint or cannot pass the key correctly, do not treat a generic RTMP/network-output option as equivalent; use an encoder path that supports the selected endpoint.
- Start with a short private or unlisted rehearsal rather than a public event. Inspect the local output if available, and, crucially, the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the transmitted picture—not just VLC’s window—is upright and correctly framed.
For a scheduled stream, YouTube may require you to wait for the preview and then select Go live in Live Control Room. Follow the controls shown for that stream. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend advance testing and checking the preview, stream health and audio/video quality.
Choose encoder settings and test the picture
YouTube’s encoder-settings page lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 ingest options, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. Its current published H.264 bitrate recommendations, accessed in 2026, include:

These are YouTube’s published stream-setting recommendations, not a guarantee of quality. Match resolution and frame rate to the source and your available upload capacity; leave headroom rather than setting the bitrate at the full measured upload speed. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings again before an important broadcast because the guidance can change.

- Orientation: verify the Live Control Room preview shows the corrected orientation.
- Framing: check that rotation has not introduced unexpected cropping, black bars or an unsuitable aspect ratio.
- Audio: listen to the incoming stream and confirm levels, sync and continuity.
- Motion and continuity: test footage with movement and transitions, not only a still opening frame.
- Health: watch Live Control Room messages and stream-health indicators through a representative rehearsal.
Loop a playlist in VLC
VLC’s VideoLAN Media Library (VLM) documentation describes broadcasts with multiple inputs and an output, sequential playback, and a loop option that restarts the list after its final item. See the VLM documentation for the relevant manager commands. This is a documented VLM capability; do not assume that enabling repeat in VLC’s ordinary graphical playlist automatically loops the stream-output pipeline in the same way. Test the full sequence, including the transition from the last item back to the first, in YouTube’s preview before using it publicly.
Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube shows the original orientation
The rotation may affect VLC’s local display only, or it may not be placed in the stream-output/transcoding path. Confirm the received orientation in YouTube’s preview and adjust the output filter configuration. Re-test after each change; do not infer success from VLC’s preview window alone.
VLC cannot connect to YouTube
Check that the stream URL and key match the selected Live Control Room stream, and that the encoder output supports the endpoint’s protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS, but general network streaming support in VLC does not by itself prove RTMPS compatibility in your installed build. If connection or authentication fails, consult that build’s output-module documentation and use an encoder path that supports YouTube’s current ingest settings.

The preview is black, frozen or missing audio
Confirm that VLC is reading the intended file and that the output pipeline includes the expected video and audio streams. Check the Live Control Room preview and health messages, then test with a short clip that has known picture and sound. A local player preview does not establish that YouTube is receiving usable audio and video.

Compare the configured resolution, frame rate and bitrate with YouTube’s published settings and the connection’s actual upload capacity. Reduce the output load if the connection cannot sustain it, then repeat the rehearsal while monitoring health. YouTube’s streaming tips cover advance testing and monitoring.
The playlist stops after its last file
Ordinary playlist repeat behavior may not apply to a VLM broadcast output. If the stream is managed through VLM, verify that the broadcast’s input list and loop setting are configured for the output, then test the end-to-start transition.
