Use OBS Studio to send the broadcast to YouTube Live and OBS’s VLC Video source to play a playlist of podcast episode files. Turn on Loop Playlist to repeat the queue; leave Shuffle Playlist off if episodes need to play in order. VLC’s documented VideoLAN Manager (VLM) playlist example broadcasts over local-network HTTP—it is not the YouTube encoder URL-and-key workflow.

What you need before you start

  • A computer that can run OBS Studio and VLC while sending a live stream. The documentation does not establish a specific computer model or minimum specification.
  • Local podcast episode files that play correctly.
  • Permission to publicly rebroadcast each episode and all included music, artwork, and other material. Being able to listen to or download a podcast does not by itself grant rebroadcast rights. YouTube’s livestream terms do not grant rights to third-party material: YouTube Terms of Service.
  • A YouTube channel and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.

VLC handles playlist playback in this setup; OBS is the encoder that connects to YouTube. The workflow below uses OBS’s VLC Video source, which requires VLC to be installed. OBS documents matching the VLC and OBS architectures—for example, 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. OBS: Media Sources

Set up the podcast playlist in OBS

  1. Install OBS Studio and VLC. Match their 32-bit or 64-bit architectures. Open OBS and create or select a scene for the stream.
  2. Add the playlist source. In the scene’s Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. Give it a recognizable name.
  3. Add episode files in playback order. In the source’s properties, add each local episode file to the playlist in the sequence you want viewers to hear them.
  4. Set repeat and order. Enable Loop Playlist to restart playback at the end of the queue. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed episode order; enable it only if you want episodes played in a different order.
  5. Check the scene and audio. For an audio-first show, add a rights-cleared still image, title card, or other visual source so the scene has an appropriate picture. Confirm the VLC Video source is visible and OBS’s audio meters move when an episode plays.

For one episode rather than a playlist, OBS’s Media Source is the simpler option: add the file and enable its Loop setting. OBS lists support for common audio and video files, including MP3, AAC, OGG, WAV, and common video containers. OBS: Media Sources

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Create or select the stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and create or select the event you intend to use.
  2. Copy the ingest details. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the event, then enter them in OBS’s stream settings. YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions describe this URL-and-key process: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
  3. Keep the key private. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a secret; do not include it in screenshots, public posts, or shared instructions. Manage live stream settings
  4. Use the encoder settings YouTube supports. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance lists H.264 video, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Check YouTube’s live settings guidance and the options actually available in your OBS version before starting: YouTube live encoder settings.

Test the stream, then make it live

  1. Start streaming from OBS and check that the intended episode is playing, the scene looks right, and audio is reaching the stream.
  2. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, wait for the preview and check stream health. YouTube recommends testing before the event.
  3. For a scheduled stream, start the event in the Live Control Room after the preview is ready. Starting the encoder in OBS and making the scheduled event live are separate parts of the workflow; follow the Live Control Room prompt.

VLC’s playlist loop controls how media repeats, not whether OBS or the internet connection stays available. In this local setup, playback and the broadcast depend on the computer, OBS, the episode files, and the network remaining available.

Why VLC’s VLM example is different

VLC also documents a VideoLAN Manager (VLM) method for sequencing files and broadcasting them over HTTP. Its example connects a receiver over the local network. YouTube’s encoder setup instead uses the event’s server URL and stream key in an encoder. So the documented VLM HTTP example is not a direct replacement for the OBS-to-YouTube workflow described above. Common problems and fixes

  • The VLC Video source is missing or does not work: Confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS (32-bit or 64-bit). Reopen OBS after installing VLC if necessary.
  • Episodes play in the wrong order: Check the order of the files in the source playlist and make sure Shuffle Playlist is off.
  • The queue stops after the last episode: Enable Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source properties.
  • The YouTube preview does not appear: Verify that OBS has the correct event’s server URL and stream key, that OBS is streaming, and that the Live Control Room is open to that event. Keep the key private while checking it.
  • The picture appears but there is no audio: Confirm the episode has an audio track and that OBS’s audio meters move during playback; check that the VLC Video source is not muted.
  • The stream is interrupted after the computer or connection stops: Looping only repeats the episode queue; it does not keep a local encoder or network online. Restore OBS and the connection, then check YouTube’s Live Control Room before resuming.
  • You are unsure whether the show can be rebroadcast: Resolve the rights for the episode and every included element before going live. A public podcast feed or downloadable file is not proof of permission.
