VLC for Mac can play local media, DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It is free and open source, but its broad format support is not a promise that every file or stream will work. Start by choosing the right Mac build, then use VLC for the kind of media you want to play.
What can VLC do on a Mac?
VideoLAN describes VLC as a free, open-source, cross-platform multimedia player and framework. Its Mac page says it plays most multimedia files, DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. That makes it useful for more than opening a video file, while leaving room for individual files or streams that VLC cannot handle.
- Local media: Play a wide range of multimedia files stored on your Mac.
- Discs: Play DVDs, Audio CDs, and VCDs.
- Streams: Play media delivered through various streaming protocols; the official Mac page does not enumerate them or provide protocol-specific instructions.

Which VLC download do I need for an Intel or Apple Silicon Mac?
VideoLAN offers Mac packages for Intel processors, Apple Silicon, and a Universal Binary. The page says VLC runs on 64-bit Intel Macs and Apple Silicon Macs. Check the live download page and your Mac’s processor before downloading; package availability and release details can change.

VideoLAN’s page includes historical minimum operating-system information and older releases, but that is not a complete compatibility matrix for current macOS versions. Check the live page for the package and compatibility details applicable to your Mac. Some legacy releases are no longer supported.
How do I use VLC on a Mac?
Use VLC according to the source of the media: a file on your Mac, a disc, or a stream. VideoLAN’s Mac page confirms those playback categories but does not document menu-by-menu instructions, so the steps below stay at the task level rather than assuming a particular app version or interface label.

Play a file stored on your Mac
Open the media file with VLC, or open it from within VLC using the controls available in your installed version. If it does not play, broad support does not guarantee compatibility with that specific file.

Insert a DVD, Audio CD, or VCD into an available optical drive and use VLC to play it. If your Mac has no built-in optical drive, you may need a compatible external drive. VideoLAN’s page supports disc playback as a use case but does not validate particular drive models.

Play a stream
VLC supports various streaming protocols, according to VideoLAN. The official Mac page does not list the protocols or provide connection steps, so check the requirements for the stream you intend to open rather than assuming every stream is supported.
How do I play a DVD on my Mac with VLC?
VLC lists DVD playback as a supported use. Put the DVD in your Mac’s optical drive, if it has one, and open it in VLC. For a Mac without an optical drive, an external DVD drive may be needed; no particular model or current compatibility was established here. If the disc does not play, the general DVD support statement is not a guarantee for every disc-and-drive combination.

Does VLC still have a browser plugin?
No current browser feature should be expected from VLC’s old Mac browser plugin. VideoLAN says modern browsers removed NPAPI support and identifies version 3.0.4 as the last release of the plugin. Do not install that legacy plugin expecting it to add VLC playback to a modern browser; use VLC as a desktop app instead.

What to keep in mind
- “Most” is not “all.” VideoLAN’s broad description does not guarantee support for every media file, disc, or stream.
- Check current compatibility. Historical minimum OS details and old releases do not establish support for every current macOS version.
- Disc hardware matters. Macs without an optical drive may require an external one, and no specific model has been evaluated.
- Streaming details vary. VideoLAN says various protocols are supported, but its Mac page does not identify them or explain individual setups.
