VLC can play a store-promo video or playlist, but YouTube Live receives an encoder stream—not a VLC playlist as such. The practical route is to use VLC for playback and an RTMPS-capable encoder, such as OBS, to send the program to YouTube. You can set up and test that workflow, but the available documentation does not establish a current, reliable direct VLC-to-YouTube RTMPS recipe or guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
How the VLC-to-YouTube workflow works
VLC reads and plays your promo media. An encoder takes that picture and audio, packages them for live delivery, and sends them to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. VLC documents stream output and transcoding, but its documented examples are not proof that VLC can directly deliver a compatible YouTube RTMPS stream. Treat OBS as a candidate intermediary: VLC supplies the moving image, OBS composes and encodes it, and OBS sends it to YouTube.
The exact VLC source or playlist integration in OBS depends on operating system and app versions. Confirm the current steps for your setup rather than assuming a particular playlist feature or menu label is universal. VLC’s stream-output documentation describes its general output pipeline, while its examples include local-network HTTP and RTP—not a verified YouTube RTMPS command (VideoLAN: Introduction to Stream Output; VideoLAN: Stream over RTP).
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Set up a test stream with an encoder
- Create or schedule the YouTube Live event. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and locate the Stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s current instructions say to reveal the RTMPS URL with the lock icon in the Stream URL field, then copy the URL and key into your encoder. Interface labels can change, so use the fields shown in your current Live Control Room session. See YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Choose an encoder that supports the selected ingest protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported. Its help page describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. OBS is one possible encoder bridge, but verify the current OBS stream configuration and VLC playback-source or playlist workflow for your operating system and versions. The OBS forum guide is a community guide published in 2015, so it should not be treated as current official setup documentation: OBS Forums: How to stream to YouTube with OBS Studio.
- Connect the playback source and encoder. Configure VLC to play the promo video or intended playlist, and configure the encoder to capture or otherwise receive that playback. Confirm the video and audio are both present in the encoder preview. The precise source-selection method is version- and OS-dependent; test it rather than relying on an unverified universal click path.
- Enter the YouTube ingest details in the encoder. Paste the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder’s corresponding server and key fields. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it or include it in a visible scene.
- Start a private or unlisted test before a public promo. Check picture, audio, playlist transitions, stream health in Live Control Room, and what viewers see when playback or the encoder restarts. Verify reconnect behavior on your actual system; the cited documentation does not promise automatic recovery or uninterrupted operation.
- Go public only after checking the event and media. Confirm the intended visibility and event settings in Live Control Room and make sure you have permission to use every video, image, music track, voice, and other element in the promo.
Protocol choice: RTMPS or HLS?
For a conventional store promo, RTMPS is the documented secure RTMP option to use when your encoder supports it. YouTube describes HLS ingestion for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP; it also notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. HLS is not an automatic fix for a VLC or encoder problem. Choose it only if your media and encoder requirements call for it, and check that your encoder supports the required workflow. Details: YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream.

Plan for an actual always-on operation
“Always-on” is an operating goal, not a guarantee established by the cited VLC, YouTube, or OBS pages. A local VLC-and-encoder setup depends on the host computer, playback, encoder, power, and network continuing to work. Before relying on it for a store, test the full playlist, loop transitions, audio continuity, and recovery after a network interruption or restart. Decide who will notice and respond if the stream stops. Do not promise viewers continuous availability based only on a successful test run.
Check media rights and YouTube policies
Use only content you own or are licensed to broadcast, including background music and third-party footage. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if it includes content you lack rights to use. Also make the promo useful and genuinely your own; a continuous loop does not by itself establish compliance with YouTube’s monetization or reused-content policies. Review the current YouTube rules that apply to your channel and content before broadcasting.
