VLC can play and repeat a playlist, but it does not by itself make that playlist a YouTube livestream. You also need an encoder path that can send a supported feed to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. This guide covers the workflow, the settings and child-audience checks that matter, and the limits to verify before relying on a continuous stream.
How the VLC-to-YouTube setup works
Think of the setup as two separate jobs: VLC supplies the prerecorded playlist, and an encoder sends a live feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter the Live server URL and stream key into the encoder; a repeating playlist alone is not an ingest connection. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
The exact VLC menus, commands, and direct-output compatibility depend on the VLC build and the delivery route you choose. YouTube’s published ingest settings describe what its ingest accepts, but do not establish that every VLC version can send that feed directly. Confirm that your chosen encoder or output route accepts the VLC source and supports YouTube’s protocol before planning around it.

Prepare the playlist and confirm you have streaming access
Use content you are allowed to broadcast
Include only videos and audio you have permission to stream. Copyright restrictions can interrupt or affect a live broadcast, including when a stream matches another copyrighted live broadcast. Review YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions and applicable copyright and Community Guidelines before scheduling the stream.

Check channel eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days to stream. Check access in YouTube Studio before building the workflow around a launch date. YouTube recommends setting up in advance, testing the encoder, previewing the event, checking accessibility, and monitoring audio and video during the stream. See its live-streaming tips.
Configure VLC playback for your version
Build the playlist from the authorized files you intend to air, then configure your VLC version to play and repeat it. The exact loop control and how VLC exposes its playback to an encoder vary by version and setup; verify those controls in your installed build rather than relying on a universal menu path or command. Test the playlist through the whole delivery chain, not just in VLC.

Create the YouTube live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Create or select the live stream, then set its title, privacy, and other metadata.
- Set the audience accurately for the actual content. The fact that a stream is described as “for kids” does not by itself determine YouTube’s audience classification.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key into the encoder or output route you have verified can send the VLC source to YouTube. YouTube’s instructions say to enter both values in the encoder.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream; do not publish it or include it in screenshots, public notes, or shared files.

Set an ingest format YouTube supports
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists the following ingest settings. They are YouTube requirements or recommendations, not VLC-specific presets.

Choose settings your actual encoder can produce and your connection can sustain. Confirm them in the encoder’s documentation and YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS ingest guidance; do not assume VLC exposes the same controls in every build. Set the audience correctly for a kids’ stream
In Live Control Room, choose “Yes, it’s ‘Made for Kids’” or “No, it’s not ‘Made for Kids’” based on the content and YouTube’s guidance. Do not classify a stream from its title alone. See YouTube’s audience-setting guidance.

For streams set as Made for Kids, YouTube disables features including comments, live chat or donations, notifications, personalized advertising, and saving to playlists or Watch Later. Personalized ads are not served on kids’ content; contextual ads may appear on live streams. Do not plan on chat, comments, notifications, playlist saving, or personalized-ad revenue for a stream with that setting. YouTube’s Made for Kids feature information describes the limitations.
Test the full chain before going live
- Start the VLC playlist and confirm that it repeats as intended in your installed version.
- Start the encoder route and verify it is sending the expected audio and video to YouTube using the correct server URL and key.
- Wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check picture, sound, playback order, and stream health before making the event public or starting the broadcast.
- Check the event’s accessibility and privacy, then begin the stream using the controls shown in Live Control Room.
- Monitor the live output continuously. Confirm that the playlist advances or repeats and that audio and video remain present; a successful preview does not prove uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 stream exceeds that threshold, so do not assume it will produce one uninterrupted archive covering the entire run. Archive behavior beyond the stated threshold is not established by that rule. See YouTube’s encoder and archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures
- VLC repeats locally, but YouTube shows no video: playlist looping only handles source playback. Check that the separate encoder route is running, accepts VLC’s output, and is sending a format and protocol supported by YouTube.
- YouTube does not connect: recheck the server URL and stream key in the encoder. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the new key.
- The preview appears but has no audio or picture: inspect the encoder’s selected VLC source and its audio/video output, then confirm the codecs and other ingest settings match YouTube’s supported guidance.
- The stream stops or the playlist stalls: check VLC playback, the encoder process, and the local computer and network. This local workflow depends on the playback and delivery chain staying available; VLC does not establish universal restart or automatic recovery behavior.
- Chat or other audience features are missing: check the Made for Kids setting and the associated feature restrictions in YouTube’s guidance.
- The stream is blocked or interrupted for rights reasons: review the content rights and YouTube’s current live-stream restriction notices; remove or replace material you are not authorized to broadcast.
