To monitor a page whose content appears only after JavaScript runs, configure a urlwatch Browser job: set navigate to the page URL, install urlwatch’s optional Playwright dependency and browser binaries, then wait for the content you want to track. Use a regular URL job instead if the server response or a site API already contains that content; Browser jobs use substantially more resources.
Why urlwatch misses content that appears after the page loads
A regular urlwatch URL job checks the server response. If the text you care about is added later by JavaScript, that response may not contain it, so urlwatch has nothing useful to compare. A Browser job opens the page in a headless browser using Playwright and monitors the rendered result. The urlwatch 2.29 Jobs documentation describes this as a resource-intensive variant of a URL job, intended for pages that require JavaScript to render monitored content: urlwatch Jobs documentation.
Use Browser mode only when a regular URL job does not return the right results. If the desired data is available in an API response, checking that endpoint with a URL job may be much faster than launching a browser.
Set up a urlwatch Browser job

Open the job configuration with
urlwatch --edit, or edit the YAML job file directly. Add a job such as:name: "A page with JavaScript" navigate: "https://site.example/"Jobs in
urls.yamlare separated by---. Thenameis optional but helps identify the monitored page. Settingnavigateselects the Browser job; use the actual page URL in place of the example. -
Run urlwatch once and inspect the captured output. If the desired text is present, add filters to isolate it. Filters can select HTML elements and convert or reduce the content, making comparisons less sensitive to unrelated parts of the page. See the urlwatch filter documentation.

If the target data is missing, configure a more appropriate readiness condition before filtering, as described below.

Wait for the content you actually need
Page navigation finishing does not always mean that a JavaScript application has populated the data you want. You can set a navigation event with wait_until, or wait for a specific CSS or XPath selector with wait_for. The documented default timeout for wait_for is 30 seconds.
Choose a navigation condition
loadwaits for the page load event.domcontentloadedwaits for the DOMContentLoaded event.commitwaits until a response is received and document loading begins.networkidlewaits until there have been no network connections for 500 milliseconds. urlwatch’s advanced guide discourages relying on this as a general readiness signal: pages with persistent background requests may not become idle, and network activity stopping does not necessarily prove the target data is ready.

Decide between a Browser job and an API URL job

To look for an API route, inspect the page’s network requests in your browser’s developer tools while the relevant content loads. If you find one, confirm that its response contains the exact fields you want urlwatch to monitor before replacing the page job.
Filter and schedule repeated checks
Once the Browser job returns the rendered content, add only the filters needed to extract the part that matters. Test the filtered output against a normal run so that changes to navigation, advertisements, or unrelated page elements do not obscure changes in the monitored data.

urlwatch does not schedule itself: the interval is determined by how often an external scheduler runs it. The official quick start recommends not checking more often than every 30 minutes and gives this cron example:

Browser-wide defaults can be placed under job_defaults.browser in urlwatch.yaml; keep those global defaults distinct from individual job definitions in urls.yaml. The configuration options are described in the urlwatch configuration documentation.

Troubleshoot common Browser job problems
- The job fails because Playwright or a browser is unavailable. Install urlwatch’s optional Playwright dependency and run
playwright installin the environment where scheduled urlwatch runs. Confirm that the selected browser is among the supported options and has been installed. - The job completes but the target text is absent. Check whether the page is actually client-rendered; then wait for a selector tied to the target data, or choose an appropriate
wait_untilcondition. A broad page wrapper may appear before its contents are populated. - The job times out while waiting. Verify the selector in the rendered page and make sure it appears under the same conditions as the scheduled run.
wait_forhas a documented default timeout of 30 seconds; a selector that never matches will not become reliable merely by waiting on a generic navigation event. networkidlenever arrives or gives inconsistent results. Some pages keep connections open or make background requests. Prefer a target selector or another condition that corresponds to the content being monitored.- The Browser job is unnecessarily slow or resource-heavy. Check whether the normal response already includes the desired content or whether the page obtains it from an API. If so, use a regular URL job for that response instead.
- An old guide tells you to write a hook. The urlwatch migration guide says the hooks mechanism was replaced in version 2.0 by support for extending job kinds, filters, and reporters. For current 2.x use, follow the Browser job documentation rather than 1.x hooks instructions: urlwatch migration guide.
